This just happened in my HRE campaign.

I'm, the HRE, am besieging egypt-held Anatolia and hold Nicaea. The crusade angainst Antioch of my Italian allies is in Nicaea. Knowing it will march through Anatolia and decimate my troops on the next turn, I abandon the siege and move back into Nicaea. The Italian Crusade moves into Anatolia and WHAM, we're at war.

This is, if not a bug then at least a very poor feature. I would not mind them getting the province, but I don't want to be at war with them over this. And I strongly suspect they do NOT want to be at war with me... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Hm, so this basically happened because they took over your province since it had no troops in it, if I'm correct? Do you have any other idea what might have caused this?

Since crusades normally can move through Christian lands that have no troops in them, I guess it went like this:

I abandoned the province, causing the Egyptian garrison to retake it before the Italians moved in. The egyptians then retreated to the castle, leaving the province to the Italians.

Somewhere in the code must be some kind of check on provinces changing hands to determine if a war should start or not. This apparently only checks at the end of each turn, causing this bizarre effect.

This should be adressed in a patch, if not THE patch... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I've seen the same thing - the italians should have been at war with the egyptians and not you.

You should have left a unit of militia, and when the egyptians sally the newly arrived italian crusaderarmy would fight them for you (I've done this with great results - weakened crusade, minimal losses).

And you don't loose many troops in the middle east when a crusade passes since the provinces have so low zeal. Often none at all.

The Crusade "War" appears to be an unofficial one. I was allied to Novgorod and Spain, who also were allied. Spain has been waltzing a Crusade thru northern Europe on the way to Crimea. I refused them passage and thus was at 'war'.

However, as long as I was only fighting the Crusade no Spanish armies attacked me. Beyond that, when, for the first time, I landed troops in a Spanish owned province, Novgorod announced that since I was NOW at war with Spain, our alliance was over.

Btw, the first time I fought Spain by refusing a Crusade passage, they actually accepted a ceasefire. Perhaps because I ahdn't attacked any Spainish holdings and the war was not official...?

i had a simmilar situation. i had reacently conquered a territory that the almohads had taken from the italians, but it wasn't all that defencable since i didn't have enough forces to guard 3 territories. so i moved out opting to give the territory back to almohads. but loyalists to the italians appeared instead of the almohads, and the almahads didn't go fight for it. next turn, the territory was in the hands of the italiians and they were officially at war with me, even though they had been my ally the turn before. bam...suddenly all my allies cancelled their alliances with me, and the next turn after that they all attacked me at once. their has to be some kind of fix for accidental attacks like that.
