In the year 255, the young emperor Thedoros Syriakos took Baktra, capital of the semi-independent satrapy of Baktra. Soon afterwards, a messenger arrived with news. Sparta, the last independent Greek polis had fallen to his troops, while the Pontic army had been defeated in a great battle. Bolstered by these succeses, he took the name Antiochos. Thereafter, he decrreed that he shall be known by the name of Antiochos II Theos.
