View Full Version : How I won my first SP campaign

I played as the Almohad, early on expert level.

Basically I did the following things :

- asap take the four iron-provinces in North Spain, build all the way up until I got golden armour and golden weapons (I took the two French provinces just north of my iron-provinces, just as a buffer).

- two of the iron-provinces were used to make bodyguards (I thought they were the best cavalry for me, they never disappointed me), the two others made Almohad Urban Militia

- never builded one single spy, alim, assassin or whatever (I can be wrong but I think I didn't even moved the emissionary I started with once)

- used enough peasants in every province to get 120% happiness with autotax on (that means very high). Never had any respawn and only a rebellion or two-three due to human errors

- my capital builded a dockyard and never stopped pumping boats until the game was over

- as soon as I had the boats to one of them, I conquered the 3-trade resource provinces near the sea, and start building big, bigger and biggest merchants there. I defended them with 12 AUM and 4 bodyguards and never lost any of them

- builded mines where I could and 80% farming in every province. I know in some provinces the 80% is not worth the trouble, but it was just easier to build them everywhere :-)

- did "sell-raids" : took lots of AUMs and some bodyguards in a huge pack and started to move throught the world, selling everything except the port in every conquered province. When they needed restocking, I stopped in a coastal province with a port left and let fresh troops come in.

- never used my king or any of his heirs in battle : they held court the entire game in Granada

- ended with three 9-star AUMs and 980.000 florin (still feel bad I didn't become a miljonaire)

- when I was ready I swept the world with my three major generals, together with about 40 AUM, 10 bodyguards and LOTS of peasants

- first took the middle-east, then the 3 blocks went to eastern europe, then all of them to western europe, after that one to england and two to the mediteranian. I took the papal states last

- never builded one single ranged troop

and finally :

- had alot of fun

Now try multiplayer

MP ? That will have to wait until the patch comes out.

Right now I'm SP-ing as the English. Going to do the same stuff as with the Almohads I guess, except 1) using longbows and billman instead of AUM 2) careful not to be excommunicated and 3) no iron to get those golden stuff :-(

I'm a little disapointed with multiplayer games for shogun but never played them for mtw. the silliest part of them was the fact that they lasted for 10 minutes, what happened to "epic battles with more than 10,000 warriors?"

Yeah the more units there are the more strategy it must take!

Here here, attitude helps nobody.

Its precisely the cheap shots like the one above that turn a thread away from its focus. (and that make the MTW forums here, in general, so unreadable to me).

That said, I don't really like your approach tao, it seems a little too hasty and conquest bent.

If thats what tickles the noodle then more power to you, but alot of people enjoy the nuances of the game by playing with emissaries at least. (I'm no subversive agent fan, but if I hadn't assasinated the Pope for the first time yesterday, I never woulda seen that cool picture of the dude with his face in his dinner)

And if you're england and you want iron, steal sweden. Its a goldmine anyway. (or do like the real english did, and sneak your way into portugal and meddle with spain)

I fully agree on the 'too-conquest-minded' remark : my approach was indeed 100 % conquest, no fancy stuff. I will try the pure conquest-thingy one more time with the English, just out of curiosity if I can do it without those powerfull AUMs.

After that ? Well either they have released the patch and I can go MP or it's not out yet and I will use a more subtle way to win. Perhaps with the Danish or something.

But I'd always stick to the trade-routes, the money they make is awesome :-)

If you are English, attack Navarre early on. It's on your border anyway. Aragon is also a possibility though you will have trouble with the French.

You mean for the Iron ? Yes, I thought about getting some of the northern-Spain iron.
There were two reasons why I didn't do it : the defenses will be very thin then plus when you get to northern-Spain, you'll face the horrible AUMs (and to be honset, I haven't got a clue how to fight them).

Perhaps I give northern-Spain a try anyway : I have to restart my English-campaign (I lost way too much time with all these excommunications) so I must just as well try that approach !

Attack Flanders, defend it, take the four iron-thingies in Spain and then brace for the AUMs. That sounds like a strategy :-)

You fight AUMs the same way you fight any melee troop. Delay them with Feudal/Chivalric Seargents and charge them in the rear with cavalry http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
