View Full Version : When peasants break, who follows?

I like to use lots of cheap units in some of my armies: crossbows, gallowglass, highlanders, militia. Because of this, I have been very wary of using peasant fodder, but it sure would be nice to have them sometimes. I am concerned that if I toss peasants in on the first wave, when they flee, they might take many of the rest of my units with them!

So, I believe MTW has a thing like Shogun did where fleeing ashigaru might cause, say, crossbow and musket's to break, but would generally not impact samurai units.

Which unit types should I be concerned about if I use peasant fodder?

Run away! Run away! run away! run away! RUN AWAY!.... Eeeeeeee!

I believe every unit which isn't Elite,(or disciplined?).

peasants appear to have an impact on even my elite troops at times. although it could just be my ineptitude for commanding my troops. it's so much easier to simply blame the peasants though.

Even Elites and Disciplined get a penalty for routs of green units, but it is half of the usual units.

according to the strat guide:

A unit can suffer up -12 morale loss at the sight of 2 units being routed if the units are of an equal or higher level.

Elite and disciplined units consider "lesser units" to only be a half a unit for purposes of this calculation.

They don't define what exactly "disciplined" units are, but you can bet your butt that peasants aren't among the discplined ones!

So, 4 peasants would have to rout by a Royal Knights for the knights to lose that much morale.

In case you haven't read the morale values, here they are again:

Impetuous: 10 and above
Steady: 2 to 14 (the normal state)
Uncertain: -5 to 5
Wavering: -14 to -5
Routing: Less than -6

Note that the ranges overlap.

If the unit's morale drops below the lowest number for its current state, then it goes to the next lowest state.

If the morale rises *above* the highest level allowed for the current state, then it goes to the next highest state.

Interesting to note: the general's death is a -8 morale for a few seconds after he dies, then goes to -2. Highly disciplined units are NOT AFFECTED by the general's death.

I think morale is very well implemented in this game. I'm really impressed with what the designers did.

The "rally" button gives an instant +8 morale boost.

BTW, my favorite morale trick: if a previously hidden units charges a flank, there is an additional immediate -8 morale loss.

Disciplined as far as I have understood is a unit with that in the description, just like Elites has it.

That means they consider Peasants below them just like Elites, but Elites consider them along with Peasants.

Lots of great info, thanks Dave.

How do I find out which units are Elite, which are Disciplined, and which are Undisciplined? None of the unit lists I have seen have this kind of information.

Hover your mouse over them http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif. It says, when scrolling between Strong Charge, heavily armoured, weak attack etc.

or you can check the unit files...
