View Full Version : BattleToads
Lame jokes aside, anyone ever play this classic? I tried it out like....a year ago. If you ever plan on playing it, it's hard. Like "bust your balls" hard.
Discuss. Do you have BattleToads?
I used to play it on NES when I was a kid. Needed to buy a joystick just to have any chance whatsoever to succeed on the third level or so, the one where you are riding a hover car over some gooey platforms and having to dodge rock pillars. That was extremely annoying. After finally learning how to beat that level with the joystick (couldn't even get to the warp point in that level without it, I wonder if it's even possible...) eventually I learned how to beat the game up to the elevator level where IIRC you fight a rock soldier boss at the end. Then after that there is a level where IIRC you are on a unicycle and have to race around the level faster than a swirling rock coming after you. I could never ever beat the last 1/3rd of that level.
Would have been a lot better of a game if they lost those 'you are stuck on a vehicle with horrible play control' gimmick levels. I do not attribute my inability to succeed with them as me being bad at the game, but rather that the play control is so absolute crap on those levels that it's a problem with inherently bad game design. It also reminds me of trying to play any GTA game level on the PC where you are operating a remote-controlled vehicle, often whilst on a timer and/or with limited fuel. Those are likewise some of the worst-designed levels in history, because horrible play control is not equal to legitimate challenge IMO. It does equal legitimate immense aggravation though.

No, I don't believe I've ever played BattleToads before. I have, however, played Combat Frogs before, as well as BattleAmphibians. :tongueg:
I am one of the few people who can claim to reach the final level without cheating, but alas, it has been over a decade or so since I did. When I got that game over screen at the Dark Queen battle, I literally cried and refused to play the game any more.

I played it when I went to a huge history of gaming exhibition in London some years ago. The explanatory poster next to the game's cabinet talked about the insane difficulty, shonky controls, and general "Let's make the player tear their hair out!" attitude, and then said it would have sunk into the morass of forgotten games without them. A classic example of doing many things wrong and succeeding because of it, not despite it.
I didn't make it past the first section. :surrender:

I got the game when I was 7 or 8 years old. I played it years, but I coulnd't beat the third level. Month ago, I figured out that you don't have to push the jump button on the ramp. It took two days to beat the game after that.

Indeed. I was much happier when I tought that there were more fun levels like the first one. But now I know that Battletoads is nothing more but a combined memory and reflex test.
