Well I'm not sure it really is the best idea ever but maybe it has merit you be the judge. I have posted this idea before at .com but maybe some of the folks here hadn't heard it yet.
There has been a lot of debate about the next game. To take your mind off the patch I will share my ideas on the next installment.
I think the Ancient period would work best covering Rome/Greece. BUT I think my idea would work equally well for any period.
1) Have the traditional Grand Campaign. Starting maybe with the Persians/Greeks. Here is the kicker, as new powerful civilizations are founded (Rome, Carthage, Macedonia) You can choose to switch Empires, IF you choose. In other words you were playing as the Persians beating up on the Greek city states. Alexander is born and Macedonia becomes a key player, so you are given the option of taking over Macedonia. You do so and proceed to trash the Persian Empire, which you built. Then Alexander dies and you have to choose one of the Successor Kingdoms to continue as. After building up your Hellinic dynasty you get a message from the game that a new power is forming on the Tiber. You can now choose to take the helm of Rome and build the world's greatest empire (with lots of Rebellions, civil wars etc) or you can choose to try and turn the tide of history and remain Greek etc. The point being you could cover this whole period of history playing the most famous empires in turn or sticking with whatever empire you liked. Of course victory would have to be determined by points.
2) Here is the idea I like even more. Also included in the game would be mini-campaigns. Not linked tactical battles like we have now in the historical campaigns, but actual campaigns with strategic maps, strategic units etc. Each campaign could have its own strategic map. For example Alexander the Great's campaign would just concentrate on the 10 or so years of his conquest with monthly turns and a detailed map of Greece and the Persian Empire. Caesar's campaign in Gaul would concentrate on just the conquest of Gaul in the 50's B.C. Again the turns would be monthly with a detailed map of France. The Pelopponesian War (sp?) could have just a detailed map of Greece with seasonal turns etc. Each mini campaign could have its own special victory conditions. Players could complete these mini campaigns in an evening. Allowing you to replay them many times trying to improve your performance. More importantly it could cover these famous campaigns at a level of detail they deserve.
What do you guys think, as I said the idea is generic and could be adapted to various points of history so don't get hung up on the time frame.
