The year is 1511 Anno Domini; 15 years after the ascension of the current King of Savony who is the 18th person of his line to hold that title. He may well be the last.

The Kingdom may very well have collapsed a generation earlier if his father and predecessor hadn't convened an États généraux, a council of noblemen, some representatives of free cities and in general, anyone of particular note. There he secured his position for the remainder of his life, but at great cost. For important decisions he was now required to summon a États généraux, and some would say that during the last seven years of his life he was a mere puppet of the country's Dukes.
The current King has so far proven himself to be no mere puppet, but this has made him unpopular with some of the more powerful aristocrats and he still isn't quite the autocratic figure of generations past, whose mere whim was law. Summoning an États généraux every three years or so is still a bitter necessity to maintain his position. For every nobleman truly loyal to the King there's a cynic opportunist who only pays lip service to the bonds of vassalage. There are at least a few among the nobility who would prefer a new dynasty, or even harbour the ambition of ascending the throne themselves. But their identities are unknown...

To the King and his loyal subjects, it's not just a question of executing everyone they suspect. The uproar caused by violating the rights of even one nobleman would be immense. Therefore a majority vote in the assembly has to declare a suspect guilty and strip him of his rights. The authority to introduce such a motion rests with the Duchies represented in the États généraux.

For the disloyal elements; things might be more complicated. There is no precedent as such for deposing the King by a vote in the États généraux, but that's not to say that it couldn't happen. But moreover, there are more subtle, shadowy ways of attaining their goals....

Short summary:
First of all, this isn't going to be a standard mafia game. In fact the resemblance is modest at best.
I haven't written the introduction yet and haven't finished the set of rules (as I want to tweak them when I have a good idea of how many players there are)
The game takes place in a fictional European kingdom in the early 16th century. There's a King (an actual player) and there's a "parliament" of sorts: a gathering of the aristocracy. In this gathering there are a few noblemen who are against the current Royal house, and who will win if it's toppled from the throne. There are a few staunch, unwavering supporters of the King who'll win when the opposition has been eliminated. The large majority however is neutral, and their allignment can be affected by actions of the King or by a few events that I intend to to take place throughout the course of the game.

The voting of this game will take place in periods where an actual parliament or gathering is held, the "day phase" if you will. The procedure differs from other mafia games: first a motion must be put to the parliament, for example a motion that Andresthecunning will be burned to the stake. People will vote either aye or nay; and Andres will be executed if the motion has majority support. Not everybody will be able to introduce a motion, or at least not by themselves.

Most if not all players will be able to undertake "night" actions of some sort but I still have to work out a lot of details.

IF I can get enough players, I also want to implement a few special roles: people not represented in parliament but who can influence the game with subterfuge, bribing and whatnot. If you like a shot at it, contact me by PM and DO NOT SIGN UP in this thread. The names of these "agents" will have to be secret, at first anyway, and will not appear on the list of players.
Of course, if I decide to scrap this idea or if I get to many applicants I'll put some of them on the players' list.

Interesting premise.

Need to note how many are interested thus far (PM if you wish to keep it hushed). You'll need to get enough to stage a game over the next couple of days or I'll have to put this back into the queue.

Sign on up folks!

10 people so far.

I'll need at least 10 more, or else I'll have to cancel the game. I'll send out some PM's.

MODERATOR'S NOTE: Insufficient sign ups to allow play. I am returning this to the queue. Folks, it would have been kinder to say "no" than to let this languish at 15.
