What units should be used as garrisons for the Romani?

Specifically, for each period. Thus far, I've been using Roarii for the Camillan period as they are cheap and Vigiles for the Augustan period as that is their purpose. But I still have nothing planned for the Polybian and Marian periods. Suggestions?

You get Vigiles in the marian period too. 98% sure.

Im not sure about the Polybian period tough... maybe just locals?

use two or three slingers their cheaper.. I usually on use two but that depends on how happy a town is.

Depends on where the cities are. Javelin troops are usually the ones that gives you the largest unit size for the least upkeep cost.

Besides, that wouldn't make any sense as it was Augustus who established the Vigiles.

I suppose I can just use Accensi for the Polybian period, but what about the Marian period? Any ideas there? Rome doesn't get any light inexpensive troops.

In Italy proper, I generally don't need garrisons. I use family members. Outside, where family members are not sufficient, I usually use 4-8 skirmishers as public order demands.

I'm pretty building oriented, tho, so I don't have a whole heck of a lot of public order problems.

I'm 100 % sure Rome has Vigiles in Marian times, at least in 1.0.

i agree with the whole skirmisher garrison where ever possible, as they are definitely the cheapest available for their size. since you're (obviously) playing as Romani i thought i'd share a tip slightly related to garrisons.
i'm pretty sure you get annoyed by the spawning rebel armies and don't like having to raise an army to fight them and then disband them or using one of your main armies to do it, so here's my suggestion: for every 2/3 neighbouring provinces field a small army with a general and have him build a fort in the centre of them or wherever possible. this way whenever a rebel stack appears you can rally out and attack them before retraining and returning to fort and waiting for another opportunity. if a rebel army is too big for one 'militia' army to take on then combine two and go from there! i suggest a small army of 1 FM, 1 leves and 3 hastati/rorarii. and the upside of this is that you always have experienced soldiers who can be used in wars as well! hope this helps :2thumbsup:

i do something similar, except i group my my empire by their geographical sectors, and I field a mid-tier army in each of them, led by a general recruited locally, I can use them to bolster my invasion of a neighbouring region when required, and they provide a good pool of auxillia to recruit from through rebel swamping.

thats what i do as well, I keep one army in spain, one in gaul, one in italy, and so on..then wherever my front line is thats where all my main legions are stationed.

By "garrison" I am referring to units left in settlements for a long period of time for the maintenance of public order.

Skirmishers are obviously a good choice as they are numerous and cheap, but Rome doesn't get skirmishers in the Marian period. What units do you suggest I use then?

Local low level auxiliaries are enough. In the Polybian or Marian periods, I have enough Rorarii to garrison Italy.

As Lysimachos said, you do get Vigiles with the Marian reforms. I reported it as a bug once, as the description said Augustan, but the reply I got was that it was an intended oversight to represent similar troops used during the time.
