Quinctius Cincinnatus movie had it was more to say what happened in the battle this is only the first half of the battle

Sorry to tell you, but it didn't say much. Don't take it personal, it's just not awe-inspiring. The ''old film'' and ''sepia'' effect should be left out, it kind of ruins the movie. Also, I noticed some spelling errors. You should consider doing this in liaison with someone else, as only through a multiplayer battle you will manage to get the desired ''effect'' of the real battle. Good try though and remember: practise makes perfect:wink:

thanks I know I not so good at spelling I've got a spelling age of like 8 :shame: the next movie will most likely have the good clips although I don't intend to spent months over getting them I was also limited on what I could do with not using movie_cam

my first though on seeing most movies is the lack of story if any story to it and birds eye views I also agree on the special effects that Quinctius Cincinnatus put in his at the beginning as when it actually gets to the battle it's less impressive

thanks for you comments Maion Maroneios

No problem, but if you really want to make this impressive, you should play with Windows Movie Maker and the movie_cap as much as you can. Once you get experienced with it, you will start doing more complex and cool things. As for the spelling, you could always get some help from grammar book or a friend for example.

Yeh get rid of the Olde timey sepia effect. It makes no sense as it doesn't improve the historic feel of it at all. If the battle of Cannae took place in 1896AD then yeah. You need to clean up the audio. Get rid of all lag otherwise noone will want to watch it. Smooth shots. Make sure each shot has something going on or the realism wont be as good. Real armies dont stop like computer generated people do.

Well, I actually somewhat liked the "olde film/sepia" effect albeit it reducing the quality of the video to where you couldn't distinguish most details. If you could just do the "old film" effect with better quality, it would be fine. It would be better though if you just got rid of it since it is very hard to show any significant details with the black/brown and white/yellow video. Remember, what works for real-life film does not work for video game footage. Not to mention the YouTube resolution is simply debilitating. Check out these excellent videos and see if it gives you any ideas:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMyikfONXbU - Battle of Cannae (RTR) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5df5X4quPcg Veni, Vidi, Vici (RTW) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4Vuo9iezMY Baktria vs Seleukia (EB)
as well as YouTube Total War videos by this guy: sin329 (especially his Battle of Ravenna and Battle of Crecy videos - they are splendidly stunning!) (M2TW)

I have noticed that having right music (Gladiator/"Forever - RTW End Credit" music) helps as well as showing continuous footage instead of fragments. Notice how smooth and natural the movements are in the abovementioned videos.

Figuring out the movie_cam is really important to start with. There aren't many guides on how to use it out there, I might write one sometime, but there is a decent one here:

http://www.freewebtown.com/creepfilms/RTM_Doc06.html

One bit of advice though, after you've saved a keyframe set, exit EB and then start it again before replaying it with the keyframe set(use 'L' to load your keyframes) for recording, a major problem I had was that the battle became random when reloading it over and over again and would turn out differently, a major problem because you'll set your keyframes then units and events won't happen where you expect them to. This can be prevented by exiting the game then reopening it before reloading your replay.

Just a couple of thoughts, hope they help.

cheers guys helps alot the old movie effect was the just to make the battle seem like it was on a bigger scale and also to make the units more uneic next time I do the battle I'll get some far off birds eye view shoots with the units moving and then zoom into one part of the battlefield to get the mass effect thinking of getting the close up with shoots from EB2 as there's more detail and more animation movement

also although most of us know what happened at cannae but in the RTR video he doesn't really give us any clue of what really happened not to slating it as his is by far the best I've seen and probably the best we will see in terms of shoots and although it is hard to get what happened at the battle with out kind of ruining the movie if he just give us some bird eye view shoot and a bit of writing to us what was happening and the battle still surprise me as until I actually read livy book I didn't know 500 numidias pretend to go over to rome side I think it would have made it better to add little things like this but as with all movie they normal just consonant with the single man action as it faster and cheap to do

the best movie I've see for action and tactics is braveheart as on battle before he goes into york he tell the nobles the battle plan of what he going to do although quick I think it what missing from most films

although a run down of the archers would have be nice

P.s I've heard about a movie of zama that the Italians made goring the war world not sure which one
but anyone know what it's called or where I could find it

thanks again

No reflection on you, yet one of the great problems with all the Cannae Battle vids and movies I've seen is, they don't demonstrate that the battle technically lasted four days and how the terrain and logic were turned on the Romans.

Sorry, actually the battle lasted five days. One may note that each battle Hannibal won he used the enemy's own momentum against them. Indirectly Hannibal picked the day, time, ground, and even the Roman commander he faced. However, he led the Romans to believe, that all the factors were in their favor, and they were making all the discussions based on logic. On top of this on the battle field he laid all his cards out on the table for the Roman commander to clearly see. Yet, he did this in a manner to obscure his true counter-offensive intent.

For example, he massed most of and his best horse on his left next to the Autidus River so the Romans could see there was little room for maneuver. So they did not think they would be a threat during the fight. Still this was the key Hannibal used to win the battle and destroying the Roman field force. Instead if he had massed this horse on his right, the Romans would have immediately perceived the danger.

Also the escape of Publius Cornelius Scipio (AM) from the battle field (this was the third time) set in motion the events that lead to Hannibal's defeat at Zama, and in turn the defeat of Carthage.

It was just a joke on Scottish (I presume). Cannae = Cannot.

good info CmacQ I'll keep it in mind when I do the next one

I was going to do like a proper movie with all the major battles in it but as I can't record the historical battles I had to leave that :shame:

made a trasimene and several more will be on the way just wondering if you know of any detailed terrain maps of the battles site themselves I've got peter connelly which has some good historical information and a few other sources but nothing as good as peter connelly

trasimene
