Pie in the US seems to mean something completely different to what it is in the UK.
Give me a steak & gravy pie over a piece of sponge anyday!
I think I prefer a good mince and cheese pie over a cake.

Got to be Pie.
Especially football half time "dogmeat" pies.
Not sure I'd like pizza pie, wtf is that?

I remember an Alton Brown show where they talked about all of the foods that are technically pies that most people don't think of. Pizza was one of them if I recall.
I have to go with pie. Cherry pies, meat pies, chicken pot pies....

Not really. Some call it a "pizza pie", but most just call it pizza.
A pizza is a flat bread with a topping and not a pie.

I have a weakness for sweets, the women in my family being experts on such things. If I had to choose, I'd have to say pie. Chocolate Dream, Boston Creme, Apple, Pumpkin, Rhubarb, Banana Creme, Lemon Meringue, Blackberry, Huckleberry, Pecan .... yum, yum, yum.

A pizza is a 2 dimensional object. A pizza pie is like a deep pan pizza but with a filling. Originally pizzas were more pie-like but modern pizzas are much easier to make.

I like both, desert pie (blueberry, pecan, pumpkin, etc.) with loads of whip topping or a dinner pie (like a Pasty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornish_pasty), filled with meats) with a complimentary gravy all over it. :chef:

I'll have a slice of Pecan pie, please. with a wedge of chocolate cake on the side.
Well if we're talking dessert, then definitely cake.

Blech! Just the thought of that honestly makes me want to hurl. (I generally love nuts, but I really really really hate pecans.)

I'd have to say pie, unless, of course, my mother or grandmother bake the cake. In which case, cake wins.

Are they really that bad at baking? :clown:

No, I meant quite the opposite. If they do the baking, the cake is better. ~;)

I shall reaffirm my previous position. A pie is a work of art, containing a great range of ingredients; it can be a dinner piece, a dessert, even a breakfast if you count Quiche (not in Europe, but it would work in America, where eggs are a breakfast staple.) A cake is a pile of nasty sweet bread with grotesque cloying frosting on top.
leave cake alone! you'll drive it to suicide you! ill have you killed, killed i tells ya....
He means that in a nice way.

In communist Russia, pies eat you!
but its till called a "pie", qualifying it for "pie" status...
I beg to differ. It's not called a pie in Italy so it's not a pie. Also just because something has a misnomer, and a lot of foods fall into that category, does not mean it should fall into that class.

Definitely pie (dessert, the good ol' Caribbean meat pie, some classic Brit versions, etc.)
seems a much more versatile item than cake.
