I figured I'd mention a bit of upbeat news for once:

Thirteen months after the original Interstate 35W bridge in downtown Minneapolis collapsed killing 13 people (and injuring dozens more), its replacement officially opened to traffic at 5:00 a.m. this morning, easily beating the original projected completion date of mid-December. Work began on the new bridge Dec. 17, 2007, with construction crews working around the clock (3 shifts a day) to get it done before the end of this year. Favorable weather went a long way towards allowing the contractor Flatiron-Manson to finish nearly three months early.
My hat's off to all involved in this monumental feat of engineering and human perseverance.
