After been missing STW for long time, I finally got STW era edition back days ago.. I happen to have the 8800GT:oops: so yes, I got the "inability to control units" problem.

I did google and read lot of posts here and then I changed to software mode. But my screen freezes often that I can not even play smoothly. I just wonder is this problem only happens on NVIDIA cards? Anybody play this game on ATI cards(4870 or higher?)? I donot mind to get a new ATI card if I can play STW without those problems...

thanks for any helps..

Hello ioriqyz,

I do not have an ATI card, but I tried a 9700pro in the past. It freezed both STW and MTW titles, together with their expansions. Other people have comparable 9800pro and can play all smoothly.

There are problems for both NVIDIA and ATI cards. Some can be fixed by other drivers or disabling features, but I have yet to hear about a fix for a 8800. Too bad, as it is a nice card.

Hello TosaInu:

thx for your reply. .Since there is not much differences between 9800GT and 8800GT,I might stay with 800GT until the new video card which coming soon..My friend who owns a ATI 1950Pro plays both STW ans MTW smoothly without crashes or other problems. However, as you said, it would happen on either Ati users or N users.

I found MTW crashes after loading yesterday. Too bad, as STW and MTW are such nice game since I hate to spend so much time on managing my cities at RTW and M2TW..

Thx again.

The "inability to control units" problem is an Nvidia specific issue. You may have more luck with ATI but you may still get campaign map CTDs that you get with both brands.

Sorry for not being clear ioriqyz. I meant the ATI 9800 pro, a card from years ago.

I do not know what the problem was really with my 9700pro: other games played fine, but TW battles froze within 5 minutes if not sooner.

thx for everyone's repy..

I just got those problems solved..:2thumbsup:

I got a new computer with ATI 4850 1gb. NO MORE "inability to control units" or CTD. No kidding. at least in those 4 hours that I played yesterday. My system was pure xp sp2 instead of modified xp..

Anyone else use ATI card and play well?

It's good to know that you're having no problems running it on that particular ATI card. I have had nothing but problems with STW/MTW since I've switched to Nvidia.

I`ve decided today to try playing a campaign on Shogun for the first time in about 4 years. However I dont want to jump in and suffer tonnes of problems that will only frustrate me and cause me to give up. Are there any major issues with Vista etc.

Perhaps any resident techies can help me? I have an Acer 5920G Laptop:

Windows Vista
Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 - 2GHZ
4GB DDR2
ATI Radeon HD 3470 Graphics 256MB

Cheers in advance for any help.

Hi there Wishazu. ~:)

Why not?
Vista isn't necessarily a problem. (Though it's probably a pain when you want to log in to a (fake-)server, but that's not the issue anyway) And haven't seen complaints about that specific graphics card lately I think.

If it doesn't work you could always try software rendering and maybe Win98/WinXP compatibility mode.

Hi Drisos. Hows things?

I installed Shoggy today and I`m about half way through a Shimazu campaign with no problems so far. I`m loving it :D

Good news! Enjoy. ~:)

All ok here. Just got back after a long total break from TW as well. Might pick up Samurai Wars. (as I promised like 10 times now)

Well I`ve recently gotten back into the whole Samurai thing after a long total war absence too. I started playing Shogun this week, watched "the Last Samurai" last night, and tonight I was at my local wargames club playing a game called "Samurai Swords" - Basically a board game version of Shoggy which was great fun.

By the way, my campaign is not going so great now, my first major battle against the Mori ended in catastrophe with my Daimyo and an heir being slain :( I love it, i dont ever remember losing that badly in RTW or M2TW.

Typical indeed. I don't really recall losing at all in RTW. :juggle2:
