I've just taken Edinburgh as the English and wanted to turn it into a castle but haven't got the option to do so. Is this some sort of bug or are there certain cities that just can't be switched over.

When a castle is over a certain size (3rd level, IIRC), it cannot be switched to a city.

It's the other way round, when a city is over a certain level (minor city?) it cant be converted.:) Edinburgh reaches that level pretty fast.

Castles can always be converted to cities.

After a city hits population over 9000 people, it is not posible to convert it to castle. The castles regardles of the size are allways convertable. And by the way, why the hell would you whant to convert Edinburg? After you conguer holl of Britain you need only one castle. Or less, especialy in later stages.

I agree, don't convert it (not that you can). The british isles can survive off a small garrison. Be sure to put watchtowers on the southwestern corner and other points so you can see enemy navies coming to drop off troops. If you have a turn of warning, its plenty of time to rally some militia to the spot. I had 0 upkeep (all militia) in England soon after I finished off Scotland and it never was a problem. Denmark and Spain are both known to land troops there however, so beware.

We should not confuse inexperienced players here. The correct criteria is this: It is not possible to convert a city to a castle after the "stone wall" has been built. The city is now called "city" (or above). A "large town" can have more than 9000 inhabitants without this being an obstacle for converting to a castle.

The opposite is also possible: a city can have less than 9000 (or any other amount people like to set when talking about this issue) inhabitants and still don't have the possibility to convert to a castle. Good examples of this, are the North-Italian cities of Milan and Venice at the start of the campaign. The cities starts out with a rather small populations (3500? I don't remember exactly), but can't be converted because the city already has "stone wall" built.

The latter was brought up as an issue in an earlier thread, without being properly explained by anyone. Such things are not bugs, but rather predefined by CA to make sure it's impossible to change these locations to castles. I'm not sure if this is the case of Edinburgh though...

Thanks for specifying that Anon II. It brings up an interesting point about those two cities, that CA purposely made it so they can never be castles... Not that venice/milan needs it, they have good miltias. I guess it makes it a little harder to capture the Italian penninsula if your miltias are weak like England, Denmark, or France.
