What is it, what causes it and how do I get rid of it?

I've never really payed it much heed before but on BC and SS it seems to be accounting for almost half of my expenses.

Basically, it represents those far away governors dipping their hand in the taxes they collect. Move your capital to a more central location helps to minimize it.

What Ratwar said. Corruption exists in every settlement that is at least a certain distance away from your capital. Its a percentage of your income rather than a fixed number and having a governor can reduce corruption.

And to avoid lots of bad traits (governor corruption for one) keep your treasury under 50.000, donate extra to Pope or something.

Law decreases it IIRC, so town hall line can help, as well as town guard.
