View Full Version : Creative Assembly Patch: what units can\'t you have in early period?

Just reading about the changes in the SP game post-patch and it seems on some reports, even after a complete re-install and new campaign, that certain units cannot be built until the high period (1205).
Is this right? If so, which ones?
I've heard crossbows, arbalesters, longbows, billmen, chivalric units mentioned.
If true, I'm not sure how I feel about this.
I can see both a historical and a playbalancing rationale to the change, but so far I have spent all of my gaming time on the first 100 years in early and the lack of unit variety/upgrade options may make it a little less interesting. Anyway, one reason to try the later periods I guess, although I do like starting early, because I enjoy building up from virtual zero.

each unit in unit_prod has an entry

"HIGH, LATE", or ALL_PERIODS etc.

Pesumably you can mod the units to the time period you want, or change the start date of the periods in early/late .txt in the starpos dir.

personally i like the way it has been made now, but each to their own i suppose.

Any units that have High or Late on their listing. You can check these out at the Total War Assembly site, in the Crusader_units_prod11.txt file or any other units file you may have downloaded.

What it does do is serve to make the game run more smoothly through the various periods and help the notoriously bad AI keep up in the tech tree.

What everyine is calling a "bug" actually seems to be a fix of a bug in the original game - the ability to build units before their time. It's a good fix in my view.

This is correct, for the reasons other people have given. Units are now locked to their designated periods.

Not sure I like this.
Yes, its better history. Yes, it will give each era its proper flavour. But:

Waiting for x building to finish; waiting to have enough money to do (something); waiting for units to be built; and now (!)
waiting for 200 hundred years so i can build a unit?

Pah!

Play in the high or late periods then?

It could of been worse, you could of had seasons instead of years.....lol http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I like the fix : now it is as it should be.

But no doubt it will confuse people ALOT, because this period-bound-unit are totally undocumented : there is no place in the manual or the techtree that indicates this.

O well, documentation, who needs them in these internet-days :-)

i wasn't big on the units being tied to their respective time periods thing at first, but after playing the first 100 years or so of my english campaigne i'm starting to think its a really good fix. it makes you use and appreciate those feudal units, before the patch they where merely small stepping stones to better units. my favourite unit now are highland clansmen they are chewing up the french. also one quick observation anyone else notice more ships being lost in storms with the patch i've lost 6 ship in first 100 years seems high.

go to http://www.totalwarassembly.com/index.cfm

and there are charts telling you what period a unit is.

Can you build an early period unit late in the game then, or are they forced into retirement?? Can they be replenished through training?

Does anyone else find it odd that one can build mounted crossbows, but not crossbows in the Early period?!

Yes, the mounted cross-bows are odd - probably an oversight. But does anyone use these? I'd rather rely on archers for shooting and light cav with a charge bonus for pursuit. Then again, I haven't really got the hang of horse archers.
