View Full Version : What is the importance of the code of Draco?
All I can find is the destiction between murder and manslaughter, I am looking for the reforms with regard to the eupatrids and the political turmoil he was supposed to fix, material at hand is rater vague about this.
While at it, what exactly was Solon's council of 400 and how did you become a member.
Oh dangit help me out here this place is packed with historians, gimme.
edit, oh may all your sons be camels :(
if i recall correctly, he was the first guy to have the laws written down in athens. before him, there was just oral law, which the noble or the priest could twist to their advantage, since of course oral law is much more mutable than written law. with the law being written down, anyone who could read, which was of course still only a minority, could have access to a finite unchanging set of laws, and not be stuck with what the Man said the law was.
so in a nutshell, draco brought in the advent of the lawyer which has plagued civilization ever since. now please remove yon camel curse from my son.
May your sons prosper and your daughters be of virtue
