View Full Version : battle won't end
hey there
i've been playing rtw for some weeks now and in a couple of battles, most of them in wooden terrain, it sometimes happens, that fleeing enemies run through these woods. but the problem is, that sometimes they stay inside these woods, running forever and ever against a simple tree. ok, thats still no big deal. but it can come even worser. and thats kind of p***ing me off right now. one single enemy general is running against a tree 5 meters behind the red line, where the battlefield has ended. my troops cant get him there. must be the 5th time this is happening to me. im playing on very hard, and i just killed about 2000 gallic warriors, losing only 200 of mine. i really wondering if this also occurs in your games. for now im not interested in leaving the battle, which means i lose. is there any other possibility, even for the next time?
thanks n hope you can help me
Sorry to hear that, and yes I've had that problem too and many more either similar or worse. Unfortunately it's a bug in the path finding in the game. It seems to happen a lot during sieges and in woods. If you have some missile units that still have ammo you can move those into position and they should shoot at that unit if it's within range (I expect you've already thought of this).
I have had a similar one during a siege where an enemy unit on the walls was "fighting to the death". The unit was partially stuck inside a tower and wasn't moving so all of the men in that unit could not be killed. I had to end the battle... :furious3:
I don't know of any other workarounds for this except for to accept victory immediately when prompted and not go to hunt down the routers yourself. This ensures that you will win when you should.

I'm sure that you can just press the Esc key after you have won the battle and still have victory (or at least you can in v1.5 anyhow).
I think that certain pathfinding bugs were fixed in one of the patches. Links to all the patches can be found here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=47099), along with a guide as to which patches you will need to get up to the latest version (it being v1.5 for R:TW and v1.6 for BI).

This is a prime example of why i always have a unit of archers in every army as this used to happen a lot to me. It was even more annoying in a city battle when they get stuck between buildings. I barly use the archers unless something like that happens then i shoot him. you should have got some archers. sorry. :embarassed:

I wasn't aware of that...
Does using the BI binary (.exe) make any different at all to the AI and pathfinding? I remember reading that it was possible to use the BI binary with the vanilla v1.5 game with some modding (i.e. something to do with "swimming"? :dizzy2:)

Wardogs will pursue units off the field. But yeah you should still win if you exit the battle.
So I had destroyed and routed an Egyptian army and two Pontic armies in this battle and then...

I now have to exit and lose the battle as I cannot hit them with anything. My onagers withdrew earlier after running out of ammo, though I doubt they've had helped much anyway...
:wall:
-Edit: It's a Pontic unit of Bronze Shields by the way.

That's a very odd place to dispatch a unit to (if it were deployed there which is the way it looks). Somehow makes me think that the AI is deliberately cheating in a way similar to when a unit just runs around aimlessly trying to not get attacked.

I think they came on at that position as reinforcements. It's basically a bug in the game. Small enclosed areas should really be turned to dead zone when the map is generated to prevent units moving in there.
