Don't know how many of you have noticed but the the developers have now made Denmark a Catholic_Naval_Expansionist. Good news?
Well i think so, however, whilst this is a step in the right direction in making Denmark a challenging AI opponent, it's still not quite enough. Why? Because the AI still bankrupts itself sitting in poor Denmark.
After much tinkering and testing there a few possible options to help improve the Danes, and i suggest anyone who wishes to have an active Denmark as opponent to utilise some, if not all, of these ideas:
1. Give Denmark a shipyard and longboat. Essentially the Danes need to become sea worthy as quickly as possible then can't afford to do it from scratch.
2. Linked to 1 above give Denmark a castle4 instead of the current castle2. Need this for shipyard.
3. Give the Danes a Royal palace and a starting emissary otherwise they actual cannot bribe from the start. A RP costs 1,000 and therefore would be a major chunk of their starting income. I think every other major faction has the ability to build emissaries from the start.
4. Linked to 3 above give Denmark 10,000 starting money instead of 8,000. Helps the Danes attempt a bribe on one of the nearby rebels i.e. Sweden or Pomerania. For some reason the Danes are currently very reluctant to attack rebels and usually only attempt to take Sweden with a bribe. If they run short of money they'll usually attack the HRE in Saxony before the rebels in Sweden!?! Daft but true.
5. However, above all the other options mentioned above, the single best one is to improve the the starting income of an otherwise very poor Denmark. The other tweaks may or may not help, a lot depends upon uprisings and rebellions.......but if they do, they may only work temporarily as if the Danes get pushed back to Denmark they'll eventually go bankrupt.
Therefore my number one solution is to double the Denmark's provincial income in the Early.txt file and this seems to work a treat.
As a result we can now play with an effective AI Denmark, beware Europe. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
