Is this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7670569.stm) what happens when conservative values become confused with state intervention?

So, the plan is to buy a yacht to sail unemployed teenagers about, and that this will fill them with good old-fashioned hard-working values and then they will improve their lifestyles and save the NHS money.

I have to say it seems farcical, people will be dying in Hull hospital from a lack of good facilities, while some chavs go for a boat ride. This is NHS money we're talking about.

It is this sort of stupidity that fuels disillusionment with paying taxes, people really would spend their money better than the government going by this example.

They have tried that exact system in Sweden...

It was a complete failure as far as I remember.

'Improve their lifestyles?' Sheesh.

I say round up all your chavs, put them on some yachts, and send them off to conquer territory for queen and country. Like in the good old days.

Bah, Britain is a nation of progressive pansies nowadays. Where's your sense of fun?

Yeah. Why did we stop sending them to Australia?

I'd say 400,000 pounds is immaterial im comparison to overall budget. The plan would probably bring more good than bad if successful.

You need to read some stories about lottery winners if you believe that individuals cannot easily outdo the government in terms of monumental mismanagement of money under their personal control.

Exactly. I hear there's a piracy problem in the Gulf of Aden. Firstly, it is quite clear that the natives are simply not up to scratch when dealing with such maritime brigandry. A British protectorate must therefore be established, in order to provide a base from which the seas can be scoured. Gather together a few adventure-hungry, one-eyed, one-armed ex-servicemen bored with the day time TV in their retirement homes to act as the officers and trainers, and an army of the track-suited chavs, seniority to be established on the basis of how many ASBOS one has garnered. Promise them a chance to get more sun-burned than an Icelander in the Sahara and enough White Lightning to explode their livers on the journey home, give them an assortment of functioning and less-functioning (after all, we don't want them all to come back!) weaponry and land them somewhere in the region. Proclaming that they are the local deity reincarnate in a shaven-headed, pasty-faced form might increase their chances of success.

Once the protectorate has been established, despatch a few decommissioned rusty Royal Navy destroyers, load them on board and sail the High Seas searching for the scalliwag pirates and tell them that last one back's a literate poofter! If all goes well, we'll have killed (literally) two birds with one stone!:pirate2:

Yes I know but seriously that money should be going to the people in hospital beds. Don't take my comments as a dig at the left, they weren't meant to be. I expect this farce was caused by a Tory/New Labour (Thatcherite variety) politician trying to be smart.

And they wonder why we lost the empire...
