I just watched a replay of a fight where I lost to Shadeswolf.

I wanted to see where my battlereport of that fight could be better.

As the battle progressed I could not belive I actually lost that battle, I was doing really well!
I began to be a little suspicious when my general and two other units routed five of his and ran them off. In the battle my general and two others had been surrounded and routed. So I waited patiently for them to return so that could happen. But no, they just sat out there.

Meanwhile I saw the real battle take form. I had retreated my remaingin forces back to a few houses on a little hill near the edge. And true enough Shadeswolf came at me, but this time he lacked the Arbalester he had in battle, yet I pulled my troops behind the houses for cover. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
In the real battle he had an advantage of 400 to 200 but this time it was more equal, and the turning factor of the fight had been a unit of 16 Alans that had flanked me when I charged out (and nearly won). This time the 8(!!!) Alans came charging at me and broke before contact. My troops ended up winning.
I won a battle that I actually lost!!!

I nearly fell down my chair of laughter when I saw that... It was so funny I actually was acheing for a few minutes after the replay.

Clearly the patch had messed up the stats of the units and the results of the individual fights were changed due to this.

I didn't think that the replay was only a replay of our actions where the computer recalculated the fights.

it wouldnt suprise me, cuz it actually never worked really before. somehow its just to difficult for the devs. one day we will have a perfect recorder.

Was this a replay created under v1.0 of the game? If so, they did warn us that they probably wouldn't work correctly...

Do you mean that even when you playback a normal replay (created under v1.0 and replayed under v1.0) it replays the actions not the result? Then we would always watch different results (even minor) due to the element of luck in battle.

I'm not reposting it all here, but if you search for earlier posts by me about replays, you'll see that "luck" in computer games is actually a pseudo-random feature which in practice is entirely reproducible.

The initial battle conditions, the seed for the random numbers, and the sequence and time of the orders each player issued is enough to exactly reproduce the battle - assuming no bugs... and also assuming no changes in the unit stats, which simply didn't occur to me during any of my "replays will continue to work" posts. Sorry about that Kraxis / all, but you're quite right, replays saved from the pre-patched game will misfire to various degrees, in this case obviously quite spectacularly.

I have not tried to watch post-patch replays yet. Anyone? Do they work right?

Thanks... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

But I just thought it was very funny. No intentions of ranting or anything. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
And I knew very well it was the patch that did this, for it was indeed an 'old' (from monday) replay.
It just surprised me that it wasn't really a replay but a reenactment. Historical, just like people reenact battle nowadays. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
