Unfortunately i don't know anything aboud creating a Mod. It would be nice to create the possibility of a strategic withdrawal during a battle.
I mean, that the units march backwards without turing around. For example: you have a straight battleline with the enemy. Now your centre-units march back a bit, but still fight (if they turn, the enemy would fall in their rear). Actually you could create a little Cannae of your own
Now my question: Possible or not possible? ^^

It's not possible...
i just make them go backwards, and turn their backs to the enemy while they are fighting. it is the only thing i can do. i dont think eb can make it possible.

Does alt-click not make them move without changing the direction they are facing? I haven't actually tried myself, but a few people have mentioned this before.

No.
What you do is leave a rearguard behind to hold the enemy while the rest of the army withdraws. Skirmishers and skirmisher cavalry are good for the role if the enemy aren't pursuing too closely, or a line of spearmen if they are. Phalanx capable spearmen can usually hold up a vastly superior force for quite some time.
And yes, the rearguard unit may have to be sacrificed.

So... much like real life then?
In every battle i have commanded i always tend to NEVER withdraw... in that meaning i only fight in the battle map to win.
To withdraw sacrfices some of you'r soldiers and since i like to role-play my game i tend to have a bad taste in my mouth Lol.

This is only when you withdraw with "esc". When you move your units to the red line and hit the white flag you don't suffer any extra casualties.

you must find out, it is really important

I've tried it repeatedly but my troops always turned their backs to the enemy (and got slaughtered...)
alt+click makes them re-deploy in the direction they had been facing, nevertheless they turn around to move there before.
would it be possible to temporary reduce the "unit mass" to make the enemy "push them back"? i neither know IF it is possible nor IF it woule have any use^^
I have tryed alt klick but i cant see what they are doing. Often use alt klick to make missile troops attack, but i dont know anything about the effect on infantry

Not while playing the game, no.
