Has anyone tried to use an army or tactic like they accually did. its alot of fun seeing if the accually work. one i tried was a roman theamed army. it looked like this:
(in case your wondering im byz)
a= archers b= byz imfantry v= vargrian guard(sp?)c= alan merc cavalry
a a a
b b b b
v v v
c c
i shot them untill they came close and then the archers moved back through the gap. the vargrian move forward and engaged the enemy. because the enemy was chasing the arches i got flank charges with the byz imfantry and in the end i killed/captured about 1500 and lost 300. now i know why the romans were so succesful!! anywho, this is taking a long time so, ya...
if you try any historical tactics just write them here

My tactics tend to be the same all the time... good thing I just play the AI http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
Spears at the front, archers behind, melee units to the side, and horse at the rear. Thats about it for defence, heh
Try out this:
Germans:
P: Swiss pikemen
G: Gothic Knights
M: Chivalric men at arms
S: Spearmen
A: Archers

This is more or less what Alexander the Great used to win his 3 first major battles against the Persians.

I try to use historical tactics too. The battles of Alexander are a great source of inspiration....let me see if I can dig up a good link to some battlemaps:

Check out some of Alexanders tactics.
Especially interesting is the Battles of Gaugamela and the Hydaspes: http://www.dean.usma.edu/history/dhistorymaps/ancient_pages/ancient_map09lg.htm
As usual, Alexanders cavalry is instrumental in routing the enemy. I especially love the way Coenus' two units of cavalry flank the Indians' right and then race to the left to double up with Alexander's Companions (Elite Cav)[edit:] in the battle of Hydaspes.
Hammer and anvil techniques work great in TW, as do other historical tactics. I like the way Alexander concentrates on one flank while using the other flank to screen-off and delay the enemy counterattack.
I try to use all of these tactics in MTW.

Has anyone tried a classical, Javelin-themed army? Try using Almohad Urban Militia, Muwahid Foot Soldiers, and Murabitin Infantry. They all have large shields, and the javs do excellent damage. Javelins seemed to be the choice weapon for ancient Greek warfare, if I do remember right.
