Hi Folks!
I just love units which use javelins before charging. BUT is there a way how I can prevent them from charging if there are still missiles left? Of course I can click on "stop" every time they're charging but if you have many of them, I'd like to use them as skirmishers first.
Suggestions?
Thanks
Roman
Put them on the "fire at will" command they'll keep firing until they have no more ammo left or until the enemy have closed with them.

Thanks, but I think then, they fire at will maybe once or twice and then, they charge... Is it possible they are to close to the enemy and they have the "can charge without orders" ability? (the jewish spearmen, f.e.)
If you active guard mode (D), they will remain stationary. Do not forget to switch it off though, as units in guard mode don't kill much in my experience. Guard mode does reduce fatigue.

that ability is bugged IIRC, so do not worry.

Whenever you put them on fire at will don't select an enemy to attack or they will throw once then charge. Just let them throw at whoever they want and they will keep throwing until they are out of javelins.

Doh! I will check that hint right now!
i wish there was a button to hold down while pressing attack so that i can chose witch enemy to throw javelins at

Giving the units in question the skirmisher attribute in the EDU might help. You can order them to throw their javelins on a specific unit then without having them charge in.

Does this change anything else in their behaviour?

@ ziegenpeter,
IIRC it also puts them on skirmish mode by default, so if you do that EDU change, make sure to turn off skirmish mode before you start the battle. (you don't want your light/ medium infantry running around like akontistai).

I usually turn of the skirmish mode for all skirmishers, because I use them to screen my elite units.
BUT is there anyone who could change all the missile throwing infantry in the EDU for me? I have no knowledge at all about this stuff...?

You can also click the unit you wish to pelt and wait until they've thrown pointy sticks and then (just before they charge) cancel your order (press backspace while having the unit selected).
Then repeat this process until pointy sticks are used up.
It requires some micro-managing, but works for me.

yeah thats what i use to do. But it requires much time. Actualy this is a good reason for using pelatists.

Group the units together so you can switch fire at will, or fire halt for more than one unit at a time, I tend to leave my legionairies on guard and fire at will even when advancing to attack, biggest problem is a single skirmish unit gets hit by 500+ pila!
