Hi this is one of these question you can never find answer to anywhere. Some times i press withdraw before a battle, and my army disappears without a trace. It is very bad to not know when to withdraw and when i can risk my army and FM.

Do you mean withdraw like before a battle starts or inbattle? Be more specific

There are certain situations when you can't withdraw, there is a notification telling you on the pre battle screen if you withdraw the army will be destroyed.

yeah like when you are defending in a seige or run out of move points.

or it could be that you are playing with spacebar (where the campaign map units move really fast) and you simply can't find where they went. Happened to me a few times, but mostly with agents because they have no flag

If you lose sight of your character, click on your faction summary scroll (should be the circle on bottom right corner of your screen) then click on "show lists scroll" and a list of all your military commanders, even governors and generals, will pop up. It will also show you how many troops they have under their command or in their city.

hm, I have never seen it. Is it when holding over the withdraw button?

this is a RTW bug, it occurs when the game sees no space to withdraw the army

Examples:if you are on a small island (rhodes, etc)
if you are in a province that is far away from your home provinces (like spain for the romans)

If we are talking about the same thing it's not a bug, but a feature and it won't let you safely retreat more than once in a turn (or you would have to chase small enemy armies across the whole world to get rid of them).

no we're not talking about the same

you can only retreat once in your turn, thats a feature, and you have to fight the second battle

BUT sometimes you can retreat your army, press the button and your army dissappears (it doesn't matter how large it is)

this is a bug, it occurs when the game sees your army to for away from home or safe territority, and it tries to walk all the way home and dissapears

No that isn't a bug. If your army has no adjacent, friendly province to retreat to (or boat) it will have the "Fight to the Death" symbol and if you retreat the game destroys it. This isn't a bug, it makes deep strikes into enemy territory more dangerous.

if an army got that "Fight to the Death" symbol it is not possible to retreat this army, that is clear.

what happend to me is:

My army was attacking the city in Bastetania (spain) and I retreated them and this army dissappears!!

I got the message "A Noble Death", and that was it, the point is that this was my first attack with Romani in Spain, so the Game saw no space to retreat.

I hope I could point it out

Yes, I think it is mentioned in the original Rome Total War handbook, you know that small book that usually comes in the video game box. It also answers alot of other basic questions about the vanilla game.

that book says nothing about small things like this :(

Are you sure you checked the handbook completely? Well anyway, when the Battle Deployment Scroll comes up check all the little icons very closely by moving your cursor over them. You should find what your looking for, or sometimes not which means that you can safely retreat from battle.

Actually, i dont think it is in the handbook, oddly. I just checked. However, the symbol is easy to see, albeit small. Its red and appears under or just to the right (i cant remember) of the army(s) that will die if it loses or retreats
