how exactly can you simulate civil wars without any knowledge of scripting?
it's for my getai campaign where the future heir is a lame and i want to simulate that the brother in law of the king(who is disloyal and selfish) takes over power from 2 regions that are under his and his sons control while the king is in the south fighting the epeirotes

First of all, find a faction that shares the same MIC's with you. Then, recolor/rename the faction into the one that will oppose you and use console commands to move the factions characters around and/or give them units in order to simulate fights. It's mostly for rp reasons and AAR's, though.

For console commands, press the "~" button on your pc (it's to the left of the 1 button). The commands you can use are the following:
move_character "character name" x,y (coordinates) for moving characters around
show_cursorstat for showing the coordinates of the place where your arrow marker points
create_unit "city name or character" "unit name" a b c d (where a=number of units, b=experience, c=weapon upgrade, d=armor upgrade) for pumping up an enemy city or character with units of your choise
As for custom battles, you just imagine you fight a real campaign battle against another faction of your nation and according to the outcome you disband units and such.

For some reason, I can't open the console in EB. In fact, I can't open the console in any of my games.
In some of my older games, which I first installed on another computer, I could open the console; once I installed them on my current computer, I was no longer able to open the console.
Any explanation for this? It's been troubling me for over two years. :dizzy2:

I really can't, I have no knowledge of that. You can ask bovi for that by sending his a pm or posting this on the Technical Help section of the forum.

First step to simulating any roleplaying, get the forced diplomacy minmod.
Without the console, it would be pretty hard to do any civil war roleplaying.
Try various other keys up in the top left of your keyboard, it may have just moved...

Start EB via Multiplayer (Trivial Script, the installer should have made an entry in the start menu).

Is Force Diplomacy savegame-compatible if I would download and install it mid-game?

Yep, installing FD is savegame compatible. I installed it about thirty year into my AAR campaign.

Ah, yes of course the FD minimod! Surely you can't get an step further without it if you want to simulate a civil war:yes:
