Incase you wondering... no, this isn't grizzly's attempt to slowly spam up the hardware forum but somewhat a change of heart....

I have decided to get a desktop pc!

It wasn't so much what was said in the topic, i already knew that i was sacrificing performance for mobility, although the bit about the 3d card ect. was all helpful, but it was more a brilliant realisation, or more like an obvious realisation that seemed brilliant because it was so obvious!

Im going to get a desktop pc for all my gaming needs and im planning on picking up a really cheap laptop just to watch movies and tv programme's on (genuis i know :wink:)

So under my new criteria this is the best i could find...

With the stores im limited to being Curry's, PC World and Dixons this is the best bang for my buck i can get performance wise, and my limit being £700....

I have done a little reading online about the processor the 3d card and the like and it all seems pretty good, i am just wondering what my technically advanced brethen at the .org think of this pc, any negatives i may have missed....

also curious as to how you think it will do running these games....

Just curious generally how this will cope with most new-ish games on the market, im never usually that desperate to play the latest shooter, so i can live without that but any predictions on how it would manage E:TW ?

For PES 2009, there's nohing to worry about. I got P4 3.0 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, 6600GT Gfx card and the game runs smooth as silk in 1024*768 with Medium quality options. (You can't select high with that gfx card of mine)

It was all about optimization, though. I was never able to play PES 2008 smoothly.

I was more worried about the fifa specs, pro evo seemed playable just wondering if i could use top graphics ect...

The Nvidia 9600GS is a beast for how much you're spending there.

It is basically 2 generations ahead of the 6000 series, which is the recommended generation for both games you've listed above

It actually isn't far off from the 9600 GT and is basically a rebranded 8800GS. (Nvidia did a horrendous job in naming with their 9000 series....)

Seeing as how it has a quad core, and 3 gigs (4 would be better, but most games don't use it and you may have trouble running really old stuff on 64 bit OS),

You should be able to run all new games out right now at pretty decent settings. Heck, I think even Crysis could play half decently on lower settings. That computer, IMO is a great buy

It is widely agreed that FIFA 2009 is superior to PES 2009 only on PS3 platform, so on gameplay terms you wouldn't lose much should you not be able to play it. However, at the same time, I'm pretty sure that tht gfx card is pretty good to run FIFA 2009.

I can't find the power supply unit mentioned anywhere in the technical specs. That seems a little worrying - make sure it isn't too weak.

LEN, i have played them both, Fifa and Pro Evo for a X box, i enjoyed them both in different ways.

EMFM, What kind of power supply should i be looking for ? im assuming its some standard rating in watts ?

Ok so i have eventually bought my pc!

Fairly happy with it so far, i hate vista but apart from that... and my keyboard spamming o's repeatedly (sorted now) its all good! went for a wireless mouse and keyboard so im chilled out on my bed... almost straining my eyes though... think ill move the monitor a little closer...

Anyway im not just here to celebrate i have come with questions

Firstly where that guide on removing programs from Vista, i now this thing runs a load of crap i dont want...

Secondly, i looked in the freeware thread but couldn't find it and im sure its where i got it from before.... but alas..... banyone now of any good free registry lockers... i have plenty of programs just itching to start the moment i press the power on my pc on....

This link (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166532) has a ton of tips for you to try out. It is a hardware forum for notebooks, but the same tweaks should work on a desktop too. I've tried out almost all of them and they really make a HUGE difference.

Note: Some of them require editing the registry and stuff like that. You may not want to do that if you are really computer illiterate and might delete something important from the registry.

Also, What do you mean by registry lockers???

I'm cleaning up a new computer too, Grizz (also w/Vista).

Spybot Search & Destroy has a feature that notifies you of anything trying to change your registry, and asks you "yes or no".

damn vista eh! keeps telling me on game specs how vista requires extra ram than xp to play a game! i want my ram back!

Well, the registry really doesn't do that per se. It just serves as a list of various information that programs find essential. I highly do not recommend making it impossible for your registry to be changed by any programs since that would first make installation of various things almost impossible and secondly, potentially render some current programs inoperable since they may require changing your registry at times.

I think what you are actually referring to is "msconfig" which you may use to change startup programs among other things.
