Shallow and Pedantic FTW.
"Pedantic" is an interesting choice of word for bands you don't like. Care to elaborate?

pe·dan·tic adj. Characterized by a narrow, often ostentatious concern for book learning and formal rules: a pedantic attention to details.
Meh. I've always thought the 'Stones sucked, period.

I understand the term, just seems like an odd way to describe a band.

You know I kind of agree with you about Green Day. I just think it's funny that I like their side projects like The Network and Foxboro Hot Tubs (And I know it's them), but whenever I go back and listen to Green Day I just can't stand them. The Stones? As long as their shirts stay on I don't mind. And why does everybody want to marry the Jonas brothers?

I don't think pedantic is the right word, but you know what is really shallow and pedantic? People who listen to a song just because it's been on Rock Band or Guitar Hero. I despise pretentious pretenders that think they're fans of the band just because they can play the guitar solo and brag about it.

I agree. Which is why I put brought in the definition. I found the usage of the word here somewhat ironic.

Dragonforce, There way to obsessed with speed and there songs have no substance what so ever. The only reason there popular is because of Guitar Hero. My biggest problem with them though is there fans and there own attitude. It seems like they think Dragonforce is the greatest and most technical band that ever exsisted and everyone should just bow down to them.

Maybe it's just me, but I find popular music to be a shallow pursuit from top to bottom. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy it, just shrug at the stupidity and follow the hooks. In many ways the art of enjoying all music requires 'getting over yourself' and deciding not to be a critic as a starting point.
As an example take Glenn Gould's recordings. They're some of the most revered (And most reviled in some circles) recordings of the 20th century. I mean, the man hums while he plays. Even over Bach. He has no respect for the conventions of tempo established by tradition. Yet if you can set aside all that and just listen... his music is exceptional. Pure joy to listen to, IMHO.
Green Day's first popular song was called 'Dookie' IIRC. If you're expecting them not to be shallow and pedantic you're already off on the wrong foot. Their music is just dumb fun. Relax and enjoy it, and if you don't like it listen to something else.

I don't know where people get the idea that music is supposed to be intellectual. Do you take a bite of chocalate, grimace, and spit it out saying "Where is the meaning in the chocalate" or "yeah I know it's dumb and ignorant but I still like this pleasurable sensation on my tongue I guess my tastes aren't refined".

Good god, they sound like Dethklok!
And Strike: just for the record, the Stones did kick ass in the 60's and 70's. It's just that it's been a while since then.

Dude, they've *always* been a crappy band. Their instrumentals are uninspired, their lyrics insipid, and Mick's singing style & cadence sound like he took voice lessons from William Shatner.

4.) "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" -- Garbage
:brood:
Hey, I just like listening to them. I'm not making any claims as to how good they are. ~D
The Rolling Stones are a sacred cow Martok, expect some pig-headed opposition if you dare say something that puts them in a bad light... :drama1:
Personally, I do enjoy the good 'ol classics like "jumpin jack flash", "Satisfaction", "Sympathy for the Devil" etc. But I also think that they are overrated just the same. Just like "the Boss"... The difference here is that this guy has nothing at all to show for, in my book at least. (Well, he does not strike me as shallow if that counts) :laugh4:
Did I step on any toes now?!? So sorry, but I could not help myself....

I didn't say the Stones were good either. I just said they kicked ass.
If you want "pigheaded opposition" from me, try badmouthing Hendrix.
And for the record, there are a lot of people who subsist entirely on garbage. There's actually a lot of perfectly good food that can be found in dumpsters, as long as it doesn't sit in them for too long -- and that's not counting the still-wrapped "expired" stuff you can find from supermarket dumpsters.

I will also freely admit to have Hendrix as a personal sacred cow. Everytime I listen to his version of the Star Spangled Banner (Actually had to play it just now after mentioning it) the wife comments on 'that noise' and I briefly wonder why I married her...

How can you not consider such icons like Jim Jones, Britney Spears, Katy Perry...as shallow and pedantic?

Shallow yes, but Pedantic?
Maybe the most pedantic song ever (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c87uooTuPoY). And yes, it's shallow.
This one's (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-NRriHlLUk) pretty bad, too. And Imagine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEOkxRLzBf0) is pretty darn pedantic, no matter how you look at it, not to mention a complete and utter failure as poetry.
I was going to say that it's hard to be both shallow and pedantic, but really, if a composer is dumb enough to try to cram his or her message down your throat, it can't help but be shallow. So I guess the two can become entwined in song.

A good way to measure the shallowness and pedantry of a song is by timing how long it takes for the actual song to start in the music video. Pretentious "indie" songs tend to take the longest.

Can't get much less pretentious than this (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=SDFWZpZLEW4) then. :beam:

Hi there preacher!
Now, that is something that only a truly ignorant and genuine idiot would try to attempt. Personally I go to the “Electric church” regularly, so that won’t ever happen (all this of course when I'm not too busy fighting vermin from the eternal horde of hip-hop!). Besides, it would be too easy to just slaughter and totally rip apart any idiot that tries too. After all, we are talking of the man who among other things ended up being the highest paid artist in the world back in the day (including people like Mr Presley and Sinatra). I kind of find it hard to believe that such circumstances were entirely created by mere chance, if you know what I mean. :mickey:
As for shallow, I would like to nominate my personal favorites in that category, the big four: Kylie Minogue, Madonna, JLO and good ‘ol Jacko (Hehe! How the hell can anyone take that little black, then turned white, transvestite seriously! He is as real as Mickey mouse!). I know that considering these four as “bands” is stretching it, but they sure are shallow in the strict musical sense. However, other perhaps more appropriate nominees are the old kraut-rockers who turned super synthetic; “Kraftwerk” who made it into some kind of sport of being as shallow as can be. Another band that comes to mind is the Swedish duo; Roxette (famous during the 90’s, if anyone wonders)… Oh boy, they sure do suck and they are very, very shallow in a strict musical sense. U2 tried to be shallow as well for a while; specifically during their “Zooropa”-period (whenever that was? The ”lemon” video comes instantly to mind).
As for pedantic; I would nominate Frank Zappa, bless his heart… Now there was a man that was pedantic for sure, still he was a freaking excellent guitarplayer and probably was an excellent performer as well. Another candidate of mine would be fusion-guitarist Al di Meola, by god his technique is worldclass! But there is little or no heart in it.
As for shallow AND Pedantic: “this is the big boom” for you guys…. Yngwe Malmsteen! Yes folks! There you have it! Pedantic aaand shallow! – All this, speaking in a strict musical sense of course. For all I know, he might be a nice guy….

I'm being pedantic here, but how would one define 'shallow'? Is it that the lyrics are meaningless/pretentious/pointless? Is it that they play the exact same music all the time? Is it that only one or a few musical instruments are used? Is it that they are popular with 'the masses'?
LittleGrizzly
11-12-2008, 10:51
Shallow for me would be someone whose songs don't really have a meaning, they are just pretty sounding...
An example would be 50 cent just talking about (female dogs) compared to 2 pac talking about the black situation in america
I find i can enjoy a song for longer if it has some meaning (especially if i can link to message) i will still happily listen to something without a meaning or message... but then its just somehow not a fufilling
