It's a pretty amusing read, if for no other reason than that the Gamecyte folks end up spending a little type aboard the Lady Washington, an actual sailing vessel. Good for a couple chuckles, at the very least. ~D

As I read this, I can't help but think of the motion of ships in the waves. I wonder how much they will rise and settle with passing waves. How violent will the weather be? A violent sea with equally behaving ships would actually be very exciting. Now, in saying this, I must admit that I am a land battle man. I never gave much thought to this new CA introduction.
But if they got this right...
I will not get my hopes up. I doubt they can match the potential.

They are aiming for 10-15 minutes long naval combats. Who cares about waves or weather at this point, that time will fly by. Here we go again, mod is needed, pathetic.

Again your dealing with playability vs historic accuracy.
Sid Meiers Pirates is fun, is it historic, not really
Now yes ETW will be more historic but they still have to get the majority of people to buy it.
I personally don't want my battles lasting 5-6 hours, I don't have that much time in a night.
I'm sure it will be sail up, sail up, fight, board, done.

How to actually fight will depend on my mood. If I dont like the country or I'm angry, I shall just blow the ship up. But something about boarding has always attracted me.
If I'm really angry, surround the ship in question with two of my own and double broadside...:grin2:

I am fine with fifteen minute naval battles, but then I have never been a big fan of naval conflict. I will quickly end up using auto-calc on all but the large and critical naval battles anyway. I think that it is obvious that anyone expecting a highly detailed and accurate naval sim will be disappointed.
I want quality not quantity when it comes to battles. I can easily take one hour long naval battle instead of 5 separate different battles in an hour. Which is the case in RTW and M2TW. Same crap all over again in the next turn, and this is extremely exhausting. Definitely a campaign killer issue in both games for me. Lay out your forces, takes for 20 - 50 seconds to engage the AI, fight, AI flees, fast forward that to the end. On the next turn repeat all that, because AI hordes will never stop coming as long as AI opponent exists in the game. GREAT entertainment, but not for me...

Well if you really want combat that lasts hours and hours you are probably better off looking at none mainstream games.
Most mainstream games are always trying to streamline and shorten things to make them easier and quicker.
There's just alot of casual gamers that prefer quick short, 30 min battles and then getting back to the campaign map. Of course if you want longer battles with more skills and fore thought there is always multiplayer. The AI is just that though, AI, it will never match the hours of gameplay that online combat can provide.

Battles cannot possibly be fought at a historical pace, it would take years to do a campaign.
What I'm concerned about is that CA manage to keep battles interesting and tactical with the shorter times for battles.

The thing I liked most about the original Medieval is you could get those epic battles which went for an hour and a half. Now admittedly, I wouldn't want too many of them, or else you'd never get through a campaign. But if two fleets of 20 ships met I'd hope that the action last for at least 20/25 minutes.

Indeed, it's always good to try and keep expectations low, with any thing, be it a movie or a game. I'm sure we've all experienced going into something with self built expectations only to find a good product, but unable to help feeling let down.
However. I can't help but let a little candle burn in my blackened heart, I want to see this. The sight of two fleets going at it in a terrible storm where the individual ships are visibly being shaken and heaving up and down with the waves would be simply breathtaking

Yeah, I once had a 4 1/2 hour long battle against all the Mongol Horde in MTW. And when it seemed I was about to win, computer crashed. Now THAT'S entertaining, one night to remember.
I definitely go for 15 min. battles.
