How is the SAT graded and what's the minimum and maximum score ?

Theoretically. However, I think they give you 200 points for each section if you do the basics like fill in your name, etc. meaning it would be from 600-2400.
-edit- Range for each individual section is 200-800, IIRC.
My condolences, Warman. That's not a fun experience to go through once, yet alone more often.

The SAT is a test where studying can really help you out...vocab is probably the easiest although I don't know if they test that as much as the used to. Doing timed practice exams can help you learn to pace yourself. Keep in mind the questions get harder as you go along. So if there's an obvious easy answer to question 2 go ahead and mark it, but if there's an obvious easy answer to question 24 it's probably a trick question ~;)

Dunno how the new ones are like, I took the old one the last year it was available I think. Friend of mine got 1600 on his SAT I and 800 on all 4 of his SAT IIs. Genius.
I got 1340 on my SAT I.
My advice? Get the SAT book from collegeboard and do all the questions and find patterns (back then, they never had more than 4 in a row of the same answer for instance)

As far as the new ones go, they added an essay and scrapped the analogies. You probably would have scored somewhere in the 2000-2100 range.

Don't worry, second time almost always gives a higher score. Just remember to get those various study aide books and go through them. They really do help
You have to do an essay section now? :laugh4: I pity the younger generation.

only in America would you get any marks, let alone 1/4 of the total score, for doing something as simple as that...

in holland you get 1/10th for filling in your name and stuff :P (actually its more complicated but in practise it comes down to that)

If they still do it like they did in my day, wrong answers count negative. If you fill in your name and do nothing else, you get 200. If you fill in your name and then get every answer wrong, you get a zero.
Pretty sure that's how it worked.
well here we don't have to make essays... so I guess that helps
we only do the critical reading and math (1600 total points)
I did mine last Saturday... but I've been to busy to pick up my results, I think it will have to be tomorrow...
I need from 1320 up in order to get em... economic finance? (where I don't need to pay the 100% of the cost)
I think I'll do it fine, I'll tell ya tomorrow shall we

Not sure if I mentioned this in the other thread but it just occurred to me.
Where is the logic in penalising students for getting a question wrong? You lose 1/2 a mark or something per incorrect answer and I think I tried to answer every question on mine, even when I was only half-certain.

11-21-2008, 03:01
There's a penalty for wrong answers so that there isn't a reward for blind guessing.
TevashSzat
11-21-2008, 03:09
Well, the penalty is only 1/4 of a point.
So, since there are only 5 choices, all you need to do is eliminate one of them, which should be pretty easy, to be able to break even in terms of points. If you can eliminate 2 or more, you will have an advantage and on average, you'll score better by guessing than by not

I took the ACT instead. Got a 30, which translates to being roughly a 1980 or so. However, it is probably wise to disregard all of the following advice, as I apparently am just an innately good test taker or something.
1) Don't study.
2) Don't think about it until the morning you're set to take it.
3) Since it's the SAT instead of ACT, don't guess if you have no idea. If you can narrow the options down to 2, however, guess away with what seems logical.

However, I scored a 4/12 on the essay portion:sweatdrop:

Try harder next time. Visualize and attack, or cheat. Go up flirt with the ugliest female in the room (cause she's probably the most intelligent one) and while her attention is being distracted, do the ol' switcher-oo on test papers.

Woad&Fangs, I actually got the same on essay section also, 4/12 :wall: :laugh4:
I took both the SAT and ACT, but this was a long time ago under the old 1600 SAT scoring system. Back then, studying definitely helped. My score improved by 250 points from the PSAT to the SAT due to studying.
I also took the SAT when it was under the old 1600 system. Honestly didn't study at all, and almost missed the test because I was hungover and slept in a bit. Managed to pull a 1340, even 670 in reading and math. :sweatdrop: Some people are just naturally smart, some need to study to do well, and others get real lucky. :laugh4:

What on earth is a SAT? Posters from all over the world seem to know what it is, except me... ~
Scholastic Aptitude Test. It's the basic tool used by college admissions offices to judge your worthiness. It's not the sole factor (class grades, extracurricular activities, interviews, etc also are factored in), but a high score on the SAT always helps.
Kinda like the UKCAT and BMAT that I'll have to take next year then, but I wont get points for putting my name ~:mecry:

(with the 1600 points sistem. I didn't had to make an essay though, it was 800 poins for language and 800 for math)

I remember back in the day when I contemplated going off to an American university to further my education. That, of course, entailed taking the SATS (the old ones, ex 1600). Looked at a couple of demo papers, just so I knew what I was in for. Did the test, with mucho staring at the ceiling. Got 800 verbal, 720 maths (which perplexed me - I'm good at maths, or at least - I was at the time, couldn't integrate by parts now, if my life depended on it).
SAT2s were similar - the hard part was the train journey there. That, and not getting overly enthusiastic in the essay - I got a question about whether or not 'might makes right' or something. Having read The Prince cover to cover on the way. Maths, Chem and Writing, if I recall. Can't remember the specifics, but I did get 800 in the maths section though, boo yah! I think the average was 760...
Thing I liked about the SATs, (apart from how ridiculously basic they were), is that they're graded on the basis of everyone who takes it. That is, unlike A-levels, they should be a little more resistant to 'grade-inflation'. Unless you get a particularly dud year, of course. (Which might explain my marks...)

Hmm.......you can't get points in the ones, ie a score of 1474 is not possible, only 1470 or 1480, but nothing in between....

I haven't read the rest of the thread (yet).
But I can think of a good reason generally. With multiple choice it would discourage guessing (where you could pick up another 1/4 or so of the marks).
In specific cases it is probably a very good idea to have negative marking. Where-ever mistakes costs lives so abseiling, medicine, flying would all be good exams to have negative marking.

Gah! The more I hear about this test the less I like it...why not make it out of 160 instead of giving you 10 "points" per mark...
We have some insanely high scores on this board... way above the national average
I got a 1790/2400 the first time. It's funny because I studied and prepared a lot for the exam.
I took it again and got a 1930/2400 with no studying or preparation... go figure. Reading killed me. I think I got a 570 or something. I scored well in math with a 720 and writing was ok with a 640.

I had some really bad experiences with my SAT testing......
About 6 months of studying, I took it my first time and got 2300 (the new one that is)
After about another 5 months, I took it again and only got 2340.......writing killed me both time since I got full marks (800) in both math and verbal.....

I hope the first bit is sarcasm because with those scores you basically could/can attend any university that you like.

I know my scores are insanely high, but you simply don't know how many hours I've spent studying for my second test to only see it go up 40 points......
As for my score, its kinda meh in my school since it is highly competetive and there are quite a few 2380s among my friends.....

I don’t remember my exact score but it was decent even thought I took a 10 minute break during the writing portion to throw-up. They usually don’t let you out and back in but it was a special circumstance. I thought the teachers aid that was told to follow me into the restroom (I guess to make sure I didn’t hide the answers in the porcelain bus) was going to hurl listing to me yack.
A touch of the flu and my mom demanding that I eat a big, healthy breakfast did me no good. :sick2:

Well, I go to a pretty good public high school in Maryland. As for universities, I am applying at the moment. I applied to Yale for Early Action and for regular decision, are basically applying to most of the ivies

my PSAT score: 165
now, i have a friend who is very smart who also got her score back: 227. holy :daisy:

Well, not necessarily. The PSAT doesn't have the essay and the writing portion is significantly shorter. Also, there is more of an endurance problem with the real SAT since it takes alot longer.
The second time I took it, the temp was like 95°F+ outside. Of course, my school doesn't have air conditioning and of course, my room had to be in the foreign language wing, which was the hottest in the school. (The rooms are like greenhouses) So, the inside temp was more like 105°F+. Basically, by the end of the second section, I was sweating like hell. I'd go to the bathroom to wash my face, but then sat down and within 30 secs, was sweating like hell again. Absolute torture.....
As for your friend.......I hate her......I only got like 223 or something like that.....
