I believe what you are thinking of is the Post-Marian General Bodyguards. You get them automatically when the Marian Reforms happen.

Sub-Rosa is right. You have to wait until the Marian reforms, no matter what faction you are.

This is false. It was intended to work this way, but never did. CA switched it to Marian Reforms... :wall:

Just to add to what has already said, the Marian reforms can only be triggered by Romans building an Imperial Palace anywhere in Italy or Scilly excluding Rome. Wiping out the Romans or kicking them out of Italy, henceforth, results in no improved general's bodyguard. It's sort of fair, since nobody else gets their better guard, but often that little bit more power can cause the battle to turn in your favor more frequently.

It is also more fun to take on the Romans after the reforms. That way you get to fight Legionaries, Praetorians, and Urbans.
