My question is whether there is a big difference between a light and a heavy weapon type in terms of inflicting damage. Can we say that a unit with for instance 10 in attack and 10 in defence with a heavy weapon type inflicts more damage than a 15 and 15 with light weapon type or is not like that?
thx

No difference in damage.

Light or heavy is only important for determining which units the AI prefers to train and for the battlefield formations.
(And maybe for weapon upgrades, but I'm not at all sure about that.)

If you want an example the AI will always put a heavy weapons unit in the front if they are assaulting a bridge or river crossing. Like Mediolanicus said, it hasnt got anything to do with the player.

Correct me if wrong but don't heavy weapon troops tend to be better?

Heavy infantry = better armor = better fighters

That's troop type, not weapon type. Weapon type only affects upgrades. Neither affects battlefield performance directly.
