My apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere....in my limited inet access time I couldn't locate anything in the archives.
How does one edit descr_ files that have been generated by a spreadsheet. Specifically, adding units for a faction that were left out. Playing as Spain was frustrating after the Marius reforms because Roundshield Cav just don't have enough punch to decimate cohorts like Longshields do, and it's my understanding that Spain should have access to the Longshields. So, of course, upgrading the cavalry stables and the missile range (onagers left out, too) are a waste of time & money.
I would assume this has to be done with Excel?

descr_ are .txt, no need for Excel. I use Notepad.
Spain does get the Longshield Cavalry in vanilla RTW 1.5, but no Onagers :thumbsdown:

First, I forgot to mention that I play v1.0 with no mods (although I have altered some stat files to be more balanced).
I already tried to modify the specific file for units and it wouldn't load. The file header says don't modify "by hand"... whatever that means:dizzy2: Perhaps I didn't have the correct spacing between entries, or forgot commas, etc.? I tried to emulate similar entries exactly but I still could've made a mistake, I suppose......

Lines in export_descr_buildings.txt:
Spanish Longshield Cavalry:
(in cavalry_barracks)
recruit "carthaginian medium cavalry" 0 requires factions { spain, }
Spanish Onager:
(in archery_range)
recruit "carthaginian onager" 0 requires factions { spain, }
Copied and pasted directly.

That's what I put in:inquisitive: I'll bet I didn't 'dot the i's and cross the t's' properly. I already restored my backup, so I'll just have to do it again....for another Spanish campaign. I got tired of that one and started a different campaign.
But thanx for the info, Shieldmaiden~:cheers:

There are some things you can't mod yourself like the battle AI and campaign AI.
And those patches are available everywhere.

Moved to Modding Questions (a week too late - sorry) :burnout:
You can find the 1.2 patch here (http://mizus.org/files/files/RTW/Patches/RTW1.2.zip) and the 1.5 patch here (http://mizus.org/files/files/RTW/Patches/RTW15.zip). You need to install 1.2 or 1.3 (http://mizus.org/files/files/RTW/Patches/RTW13.zip) before you install 1.5. It's probably better advised to go with the 1.2 patch for the upgrade - it's smaller, so faster to download, and has less reported problems with it than 1.3.
As said, a lot of changes made to the game in patches are hardcoded and cannot be changed by modding. In addition, later version also do have a slightly higher level of modability if I remember rightly. Also upgrading will allow you to share your modifications with more people if you wish to at a later date.
~:)
I was always under the impression that 1.5 required 1.3 before being able to be installed, probably because they are both side-by-side upgrades with 1.4 and 1.6 versions of BI.
