Dose ETW has the feature to name a unit or an army of your own choice? like "1st Imperial Guards".
That would be cool.

It really would, but I doubt it will be possible.

It would be quite nice. Maybe if a unit performed extremely well you could give it a unique name, since generally it was only those types of unit that got a special name. Most people generally just gave them numbers or, as Russia is the only specific example I know of that did this, named them after the towns that they were garrisoned in or drawn from (Moscow Grenadier regiment from Moscow, etc.)
Or maybe they could just be auto-assigned. That wouldn't be as neat, but it would still be cool :P

In video preview 4/5 Road to Independence you can see that there's a box that says my unit name when viewing a unit. I assume this means we will be able to name our units. I'm sorry I don't have a screenshot of it, but it's there I swear. ~D

Can I trust the words of a stranger who's been a junior member for the past two years? :clown:
Imma go check out that vid.
EDIT: [20 mins later] Got a screenie! Sorry for the poor quality, but I took it off YouTube...
https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/picture.php?albumid=53&pictureid=645
If you squint and bring your eyes a millimeter away from the monitor, you can clearly see the textbox beneat the unit's typename which reads, "my unit name" or something like that. I think Haxorsist is correct!
:jumping: :jumping: :jumping: :jumping:
THANK YOU, CA!! I LOVE YOU, JACK LUSTED!!!
Another edit: Is it just me, or is the player playing as the Powhatans? I don't think so, otherwise it wouldn't say "At War," but I dunno...

Hell Yea.

Nah, that's probably from the 1st chapter when you defend Jamestown, so they would be the colonists. Also would explain why thats the limit they can see north wise.
That is going to be really cool ^_^ as for units I can always name them Legion 1 2 3 4......but I can not wait to name the ships
(Yes this is my first post since uhhhhhh I think 06, I never needed to log in just loved reading it all ^_^

Naming units?! Proof?! Thanks Haxorsist, thanks Methuselah!
This thread is now an official Sir Beane approved (TM) party zone. Break out the rum ration and ships biscuits! :birthday2:
Also, sorry to one up you Methuselah, but I got a better quality screen.

Yay! I simply can't wait to get beaten by a 13-year-old with a strategic skill far exceeding his level of eloquence using a unit of musketeers called "OMGt3h K1LLZ0RZ!!!111"
Sarcasm aside, I love this.

Since we can change City names it would make sense to be able to name our units. This will be really nice if it is doable.:2thumbsup:
i knew that a while back, as soon as i saw the unit box i stopped the video and looked at the features on it :2thumbsup:
a few things worry me though
180 upkeep! for an indian unit! way to much lol
550 intial cost, again expensive for a medicre archer unit
0 range??? that doesnt make sense....
135 men, larger unit sizes perhaps

My thoughts exactly. Although it would be fun to conquer the world with a unit of riflemen called "LOLWTFBBQ!!11!!one!1"
wow way to ruin the thought now I have to worry about that :P. As for naming cities that is cool but again for people going to change the name of London -_-, or Berlin.
0 range? I see the experience bar on the side maybe it is experience in range till next level?

Don't get all worried over re-naming cities, though. We've been able to do that since Barbarian Invasion. Sure, there were probably a few idiots who renamed Paris along the lines of "All this lands are belonged to us!!!1" or something. For my part, I renamed Rome to "The Holy City of Rome."
Despite this, it was a feature probably not taken advantage of. Same will apply with the units, methinks. I can't wait to call them "1st cohort of the 13th Legion" or something, and rename the General's unit "13th Legion." This'll be so kool...
Btw, Sir Beane, do you always have to be so competitive?! I mean, c'mon man! :laugh4:

As for stupid unit names, hopefully online you either can't rename them, or only you can see them.
It's stats are worrisome,*0 range?* but hopefully they have been changed since then.
You've been able to remain cities since Rome 1.6 iirc, or at least M2TW.

I stand corrected, I think. RTW 1.6, although EB somehow found a way to rename cities and that mod is on RTW 1.5. I'm confused, but it matters not. The fact remains that units can be named, and CA has temporarily satisfied the mob. Good for them!

But I must win the love of the forum! My honor depends on it. Now if only there were prizes.... :laugh4:
Actually though I just uploaded the better version because you can see the fancy unit stats better, such as reload skill and so on.
I think it will be great to see some nice renamed units in multiplayer. It would be fun to people's creativity when it comes to honoring and rewarding good units.
Renaming cities won't be so bad so long as the opposing player doesn't rename all my captured cities to 'Pooptown' or something similar.
Then again that has the potential to be hilarious... in a silly sort of way.

On a side note, we really need a 'walk the plank' emoticon. You know, for when we need to execute digital enemies in proper nautical fashion.
Holy... nice find!
This is something that I've wanted ever since we could rename cities. It might be fun to build up a full stack of units and rename every unit specifically in them, really personalize your armies and send them out to fight.
If nothing else it will give you something really interesting to do when you've got your affairs set but don't want to hit "end turn" just yet.

So, we can rename cities and units but what about factions??
I doubt it. Since the game is so hinged on historical accuracy, I doubt CA would want you to change random faction names as you played them. Also, it could make for some wierd multiplayer campaing faction names :dizzy2:
I guarentee that at least one time you would have a message pop up saying "Faction Eliminated: Your Mom." or something else. Kind of like Sir Beane's Pooptown scenario.

You can rename factions in M2TW when you play HotSeat so I imagine that perhaps this is possible in multiplayer campaign in ETW too.
Wait you could rename cities in BI? wow Missed that  and I got BI the day it came out too :(

It does look as though units can be named. This makes sense if for no other reason than the units included in the Special Forces Edition. But will they be changeable?
It is a nice feature if it is, but not exactly sliced bread.

With the ability to name units and research technology and upgrades for existing units this is going to be the best game yet for roleplay!
Having a unit of elite line infantry that have been with you from the start, taken part in all your glorious charges and last ditch defenses, being able to upgrade them and give them better tech to keep them relevant, then giving them a fancy name to go with their tremendous experience and value... just fantastic.
The only thing that can make this better is if units can gather traits like generals. Having a paticularly vicious and elite unit gain traits that reflect how much the enemy fear their reputation would be nothing short of wonderful.

If Generals can have traits, I can not see why units could not. But it is something that would need to be moded in to be sure.
One thing though, be careful what you wish for, you might get it…and we know how wonderful the traits system has worked in the past!:laugh4:

Traits for units would be interesting. The Coldstream Guards have a reputation for being a hard fighting enemy when lowers the morale of opponents and means their reinforcements are of a highly quality than a unit that is infamous for cowardise etc.
Push it to the point when a unit is so badly thought of, you have to disband it rather than try and retrain

I understand that!
And perhaps, the named special units going into the game are an example of elite units having already won those honors.
Still more wait and see questions.
When will it end???
When the game comes out, or even later?
:dizzy2:
I came to think of one thing. Apart from naming cities, units and factions, wouldn't it be interesting if you could also name your newly born family members? It could of course be abused, but it would also allow you get more attached to your empire. Maybe you would even start to care for them and not just have them killed off in case they have bad traits (or at least feel bad about it when you do this. (Then, you might also regret the name that you gave them and purposefully have them charge uphill into a mass of waiting bayonets (as you have always done.))) (Actually I'm not entirely sure if there are others around here who share my nasty tendency for general mistreatment (pun intended)).
...
I really like parentheses.

If all of my Generals had their own custom name it might possibly persuade me to stop throwing people with awful traits straight into a row of spears :P Or maybe not.
Sadly I doubt this paticular feature will be in Empire. It would be great if it was though.
However, what you can do is to name your general's bodyguards. I simply ought to have a group of them called "The Baby Sitters". Also, when playing as the Persians, I will name them Immortals just for the sake of it.

Yep, the Jacobites are in there as an emergent faction. They won't be playable however, so I don't think you get the option of supporting them. :(

Oh, I see.
I thought you all meant you could actually re-name the cities in-game, like in Civilisation.
With regards to naming units / armies / ships etc. in ETW, is there any definite confirmation of this from CA?
After GTA IV's unfulfilled promises, I'm wary of believing hype until it's confirmed.

In Medieval 2: Total War and RTW: BI, you can just go to the screen where you build buildings, then left click where it says something like "Milan" - Large Town, and you should be able to edit the name of the city/castle.

I guess I'd better start thinking of names for stuff, then.
I'll probably theme my ships. My Atlantic fleet can be named after animals (HMS Bear, HMS Eagle, etc.) and my channel fleet after Roman emperors (HMS Tiberius, HMS Pertinax, etc.). Or something along those lines.
As for land units, that could be a bit trickier. Maybe Roger's Framers (As in the rabbit) could do for one. The Black Hand could be my really hard, scary infantry.....
hhhmmmm......... Choices
