Bitterly cold air bottled up over the depths of the Arctic will plunge southward next week, gripping the eastern two-thirds of the nation.

The frigid air will likely arrive in two waves. The first shot will blast the Midwest and Northeast early next week. The second, which will prove to be the harshest, will encompass virtually all places east of the Rockies by next weekend.

Expert Senior Meteorologist Elliot Abrams (http://www.accuweather.com/mt-news-blogs.asp?blog=Abrams&pgurl=/mtweb/content/Abrams/archives/2009/01/weekend_snow_1.asp) reports, "Joe Bastardi has been talking about a daytime temperature below zero in Chicago (http://www.accuweather.com/proBenefits.asp) and a nighttime low near 0 in New York City... and if one of these Arctic highs makes the plunge south and east, those ideas will turn out right."

Blustery winds will usher in the arctic air, resulting in even colder and potentially dangerous AccuWeather.com RealFeelĀ® temperatures.

The air Friday over a portion of Alaska was colder than the air anywhere else in the northern hemisphere. That is the source region for the air coming into the northern Plains next week.

There are early indications of a reinforcing shot of arctic air settling over the East in the days leading up to Inauguration Day (http://wwwa.accuweather.com/regional-news-story.asp?region=eastusnews).

AccuWeather.com Community Director Jesse Ferrell says that the forums are abuzz about this potential for extreme cold next week in the Northeast. He has a blog showing maps and data from the GFS, which says that New York City will be the coldest in at least 14 years.

I'm gonna start burning coal once it is the coldest weather since 80 years.

I'm going to burn some coal.Uh, yeah. You know up here we first started having real cold weather in more than random one-day spots this week - a good three months or so later than was the norm when I was a kid in the early Nineties. Heck, back then there was enough snow to ski on in the woods too; that hasn't been the case for a long time now.

It seems to kind of elude the naysayers screwed up weather patterns are kinda part of the global warming thesis.

the fact that it might be the coldest year in 15 years does not prove or disprove anything, however before another 15 years are up this may well be considered the year the tide started to turn against the catastrophic CO2 induced anthropgenic climate change alarmists.

Elliot Abrams is my favorite weatherman. He's done the cleverest and funniest forcasts I've ever heard. On topic, I don't think you'll hear Elliot declaring the end to global warming...just yet. :laugh4:

While we will have our disagreements, I'm going to say that the latter quote is the best, one versus the thread title itself and the naysayers quote.

The media and those scientists who always crow about the dangers of global warming always point to recent temperatures, ex. "July hottest month on record, Dangerous heats may kill crops, Warmest October in 9 years, etc." as the effects of global warming on our global climate. Yet, when it gets colder than any of the previous 15 years, they brush it off as simply the effects of global warming that skews the climate.

Taking single examples and saying they prove or disprove a single hypothesis is dangerous and pretty ridiculous. So don't blame the OP for saying that global warming is debunked when the media/consensus of scientist play the same little game, taking single examples and extrapolating the effects over the long term.
Overall, however, I find this discussion shallow and pedantic.

Either way, if the glaciers melt down... things are going to get really ugly... (ask the Netherlands)

Erm, yeah. 'Scuse me but how's the here winters having been getting steadily shorter and warmer for the pasty near twenty years "a single example"...? I live at the height of the frikkin' southern Alaska, ferchrissakes. Skiing used to be everyman's winter pasttime even here on the southern coast.

Oh, and that lenghtiest cold spell here thus far I mentioned above ? Ended today, judging by the way it's raining water and the snow's largely melted already.

So yeah.

This is just a trolling thread.

No science quoted. Just a title begging to be flamed at and a first post with equally troll-ish comments. It wont serve anything but to get people to fight and increase their post counts.

As my final comment I would like to point that since the US is not the whole world you cannot comment about 'global warming' just because it ll be cold according to your local forecast. My apartment is cold at the moment and I ll turn of the central heating, I do not however expect oil demand to rise globally because I will do so.

Weather =/= Climate

Yeah that is the latest hymn of the church of global warming here as well, you will just have to wait for the alien invasion that will finish us of once and for all.

edit: ah, yellowstone is going to explode, the effects are similar to nuclair winter. Be afraid.... be very afraid.....

I don't see what's so "religion" about it when it's very concretely rendering my winter clothes unnecessary, and has been for a fair while now.

Just because the overwhelming evidence is that all climate change threads degenerate into baiting and bad temper - leading to a rapid and uncontrollable submergence of intellectual endeavour under a roiling wave of mud, doesn't mean to say it isn't possible to debate the subject intelligently.

Sadly, this is not an instance that bucks the trend.
