"The way is shut...!"

https://img522.imageshack.us/img522/3202/theywayisshutgm9.png

(Actual KH campaign)
When the Armies of the Koinon Hellenon marched to conquer Antiocheia, the seleukid Satrap of Syria led his army to the border to Kilikia and awaited the superior hellenic forces at the strait passage between sea and mountains, on the road that leads from Tarsos to Antiocheia. When the Hellenes arrived, they slaughtered the seleukid ambassador and his unit of light infantery, when he went forward to prevail upon them to retreat.

The hellenes formed up their battle array and shouted to the Seleukids, they should clear the way and retreat to Edessa or die here. The Satrap of Syria did not intend to let his people go into hellenic servitude, and knew that 2 forces have been sent from Seleukeia and Babylon and would arrive in Antiocheia soon. He decided to buy them the time they needed, sounded the charge and shouted to the Hellenes: "The way is shut!".

That day, the Satrap and his army went down fighting, but they held the Hellenes back just long enough, so the 2 supportive armies appeared near Antiocheia when the Hellenes layed siege on that city. Before they were ready to attack the city, the Seleukids reached them, and defeated them in a bloody battle. With that, Antiocheia was save. At the borderline to Kilikia, next to the road, the Seleukids raised a marble statue of their heroic Satrap. In its socle they carved those words, that adress every intruder until today: "The way is shut!"

(OOC: Stole the idea from the Leonidas-Saga ^^ Since there was no "Thermopylae" in my campaign, I just had to...)

brilliant background story and i would love to have you win for that but the picture itself isn't that what i would say 'wow it doesn't matter what comes now i vote for that '
but brilliant background story simply brilliant

It's kind of funny to imagine oneself as a traveler; all of a sudden you see a large statue near the road, which reads "The way is shut." Shrugging, you turn around and go back down the road. :clown:

I actually thought it was a LOTR reference, though...

SwissBarbar
01-11-2009, 16:43
hehe, it's a sign to remember future intruders what happened once to those intruders, not to frighten them by a simple statue *G*

I don't play LOTR, so its not a reference to that RPG. Its simply my own KH-Campaign that I roleplay.

I'm looking forward to great pictures of yours. Lets post

Well, there was the old man that they found who said "The way is shut" just before he died, and well...it doesn't really matter.

SwissBarbar
01-11-2009, 17:11
ah, i know what you are referring to. The ghost there. "Der weg ist versperrt" in german ^^ yes

Maion Maroneios
01-11-2009, 18:12
Actually, he refers to Gandalf who shouted to Balrog: "You shall not pass!" be fore he fell with the monster into the abyss. And he didn't die, mind you:yes: Good picture and excellent background, btw:thumbsup:

EDIT: Hey SwissBarbar, it's true like every film is transliterated into German there (assuming you are German, Austrian or maybe Swiss)? Quite funny, I used to watch some German channels in the past to get some laugh, especially when my mother did a passionate reproduction of the scenes while translating German into Dutch for me:laugh4:

Well I haven't been on for awhile, so here's mine, taken from my current Epeiros campaign. I call it "To the Flank!"

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/3d240e7d1d.jpg

246 B.C. Near the town called Klaudaia, namesake Klaudios Aiakides, founded by him in 251 B.C.. Klaudios, youngest son of the great Pyrrhos and now king, has finally reunited Hellas after his father was defeated and forced to conquer Lysimachos' old kingdom(wiki it if you don't know what I mean). The dreaded Getai in the north finally invaded Makedonia, and Klaudios and his nephew Antandros Argeades, grandson of Antigonos Gonatas(sp?) have led an army to stop the getic army that has laid waste to Klaudaia.

EDIT: It may not show up, I can't see it atm. EDIT: There we go. :)

Well, no, I was talking about the book. In the movie, the Ghost says The way is shut, but in the book an old man says it some time before the War.

Can't see your pic, Megas Pyrrhos.

And to Maion: I absolutely hate dubbing movies! Belgium (well Flanders only actually) and the Netherlands must be the only countries that subtitle everything. The best dubbing I ever saw was Polish TV. 1 male speaker with a heavy voice played all the characters in the show and although you could still hear the original voices in the background, it was very strange to hear, among others, a little girl speaking with such a heavy voice...

Back on topic now...

@ Mediolanicus: great pic ! We should post more wood-battles like this.

@ Maion Maroneios: Yes, I am Swiss like my nickname says  I think he refers to the scene, where aragorn and his mates go to recruit those ghosts, and theres this inscription: "the way is shut, it was made by those who are dead, and the dead keep it, the way is shut" . I thought from the beginning that this was familiar to me ^^ Yes, our films are synchronised in german, but most films are available in the original language with subtitles in the cinema and on DVD's several languages and subtitles are available in any case. Mostly I watch movies in the original language with german subtitles (or if I have seen it many times in english with english subtitles, good english lesson ^^.)

ah, now I see yours too, Megas Pyrrhos. Very good :2thumbsup: is it from your campaign or a random battle?

Megas Pyrrhos
01-11-2009, 19:03
Campaign, in around 246 B.C.. Pyrrhos died just 5 years ago. And I bribed Antandros Argeades into my faction as my King's great-nephew (he is the closer general, the one in the background barely seen is Klaudios)...I thought it was rather funny, but I roleplayed it off as, when Makedonia was reduced to just Athenai and Chalkis, Antandros came over to my faction instead of fighting to the last gasp, giving him governorship of Ipsos and master of soldiers in the eastern theater of war.

Aha, I see. I just made a connection between 'old man dying' and my limited memory of both the movies as well as the books (especially the latter:yes:).

Add Greece to you roster:wink: Yeah, it's can be quite irritating if you ask me. Well my mother said they do it to 'preserve their linguistic identity' or something of the same lines:dizzy2:

Great pic, btw:thumbsup:

I see, I do more or less the same as you. Only sometimes I don't enable subtitles at all, helps me understand and learn the pronunciation of English words, as with subtitles you're generally more fixed at what's written instead of what's said:yes:

True, true. I managed to ignore the subtiltes meanwhile when I understand whats spoken. So I can just switch to the ST for several words I don't understand. But that needs practice ^^

Can I propose this pic be retitled 'The Kataphraktoi from Snowy River' (with apologies to Banjo Patterson)?

When they reached the mountain's summit, even Clancy took a pull,
It well might make the boldest hold their breath,
The wild hop scrub grew thickly, and the hidden ground was full
Of wombat holes, and any slip was death.
But the man from Snowy River let the pony have his head,
And he swung his stockwhip round and gave a cheer,
And he raced him down the mountain like a torrent down its bed,
While the others stood and watched in very fear.

He sent the flint stones flying, but the pony kept his feet,
He cleared the fallen timber in his stride,
And the man from Snowy River never shifted in his seat -
It was grand to see that mountain horseman ride.
Through the stringybarks and saplings, on the rough and broken ground,
Down the hillside at a racing pace he went;
And he never drew the bridle till he landed safe and sound,
At the bottom of that terrible descent.

Question.

Should I have Frabs running in order to do screenshots? The Normal procedure does not work, but I thought Frabs was only for videos :-s.

For example, this is the screenshot of my Roman veterans facing the Macedon charge for an AAR.

And this is the one for Lucius Conelius Scipio charging downhill "Medieval Knight"-style into Akontesterai

For doing screenshots I simply press the button on the right edge of the keyboard for taking screenshots, then I convert the .tga file into a .jpg or .png one (I use VirtualDub for this, even if it is thought for videos, but I think that Paint Shop Pro might work as well) and upload it on Imageshack or other web spaces.

And this will be my very first entry (how excited am I!)

"Strategous, lead us to glory!"
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/Thunder_wulf_X/Leadus2.jpg

Winter, 268 BCE
In this first year of the 128th Olympiad, 508 years after the First Olympiad war wages on in the Hellenic lands. The Koinon Hellenoi have been obliterated. Only last summer, brave Mekdonian troops lay siege once more upon the city of Rhodos, the last standing Polis of the Koinon. This time, Antigonos Argeades achieved what his ancestors could not, and the great Kolossos- this immense shame to Makedonian pride- is now in our hands. Justice is served.

After his campaign against the Greek Polei, Antigonos returns home to Pella but there is yet no hope for peace. The wretched Epeiros and their king Pyrrhos are still a threat and have even laid siege to the Makedonian capital itself. The great Basileus of Makedon with his battle-hardened troops push the Epeirotes back to their homeland and finally, with the conquest of Ambrakia, the tides have turned. Pyrrhos retreats to Epidamnon in hopes of rebuilding an army, but Antigonos, Basileus Makedonon, conqueror of the Greeks is in pursuit.

In this winter of Greek discontent, the fate of the Hellenic world hangs in the balance. Antigonos' brave and loyal men are eager in spite of the pressure and they cheer on: "Strategous, lead us to glory!"
