Ok... so installed Medieval 2, start the game and begin a new campaign- and the only playable factions turn out to be the English, French, Spanish, HRE, and Venetians?? What happened to the Islamic factions, the Russians, the Byzantines??

You have to unlock them: either by winning a short campaign or by unlocking them manually. Copy and paste all unlockable factions in the descr_strat file to playable and you can play them. The file can be found in the C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign folder and the file should look like this:

playable
england
france
hre
spain
venice
sicily
milan
scotland
byzantium
russia
moors
turks
egypt
denmark
portugal
poland
hungary
papal_states
end
unlockable

end

As you see you can also unlock the Papal States

You can't be the Timurids,Mongols or Aztecs. They all need to be modded or changed to make them work...But I cannot. I'm limited to mapping~:(

After you get bored of M2TW, go try some fantastic mods for it. Endless fun!

Hello Monsieur Alphonse,
I trtied to add them manually the way you described it, but it doesn't work. I copied and pasted the unlockables to playables, but nothing happens and saving the changes is not allowed (even saving with another name doesn't change anything). Gues I'll just have to unlock them in the game...

Did you change the attribute of the file and removed read only? (right click and uncheck the read only) Do you have Vista because then you are screwed.

Copy the descr_strat file, save it to the desktop, then make the faction changes and overwrite the original file.

Another method:

but, again copy the file medieval2.preferences.cfg to the desktop first.

If I remember this correct copy the descr_strat to an other place. Chance it as you want it and copy it back.

Yes. Copy and put the file on the desktop. Change it as Monsieur Alphonse has advised then overwrite the file in Program files. You'll be asked to verify the change-just agree.

This works on Vista.

yeah that trick took me a while to do. I have a whole folder for edits that m2tw and rtw wouldn't let me save. Works fine

Other alternative is to run notepad.exe or your other text editor as an administrator. This will let it save the file.
