Itunes giving me a headache, refusing to play music

So I've got this anoying problem which surfaced a couple of days ago, seemingly out of the blue. The thing is that my Itunes seems to be on strike and refuses to play the music I'm asking it to. I double click on a random song, and it doesn't play. It just seems to be on a constant pauze, even when I browse through the song. It doesn't make a single sound. It's strange, it's a recent thing and I don't recall changing any settings whatsoever, and youtube music videos work like they should.

At about the same time my itunes quit on me, my videos and dvds don't seem to work either. DivX just keeps on showing me a black screen, no sound - although it does seem to be running the movie since DivX is showing how the seconds slowly turn into minutes.

So all in all, pretty much everything which should be making noise is not making it. And it all seemed to have started with itunes.

Does anyone have any idea whatsoever as to how to fix this ?


PS: I'm using Vista, and the latest version of itunes.

I sense stinking evil of corrupted codecs somehow.

It's either:

Bad software settings.
Corrupt sound drivers.
Compatibility issues.

What OS are you on?

Well, IMO, removing anything related to audio and video codecs from Add/Remove Programs (or whatsoever it is in Vista), making a registry cleaning with the help of a reliable program such as TuneUp Utilities 2009, taking a restart and installing K-Lite Codec Pack (Full) afterwards is a way to go.

1. Ok, do you have the small sound icon in the System tray? You said Youtube works, so I'm guessing that the volume icon is there and isn't inadvertently hidden with the volume settings turned all the way down.

2. Now go to Control Panel and click Hardware and Sound, click "Manage Audio Devices". This should show your playback devices and check which is listed as the default device and that they display "Working". Make sure that the Speakers (possibly Speakers/Headphones) is the default device, and if it is not click "Set Default" and "Apply".

2. Open Device Manager under Control Panel\Hardware and Sound and scroll down to "Sound, video and game controllers", double click the default sound device. Click the driver tab and press uninstall (make sure the "Delete the Driver Software for this device" box is NOT ticked).

At the top of the Device Manager window click "Scan for hardware changes". You should be prompted that the device is being installed. Now check if you have sound, hopefully you do. If you don't I'll continue.

Well I followed the advice you guys gave me, and installing the K lite codec pack did the trick. Both Itunes and movies now play as they should, and I can now continue to annoy my roommate with loud music and ridiculously bad movies.

So thanks to the both of you, I owe you two a beer.
