Im playing as England on easy/easy. Its turn 44, taken all of scotland, ireland, wales and just starting in France, Have taken Rennes and am massing outside Angers after just destroying 3 french armies in one battle .

The new pope is english. Is there anything that you recommend I do to take advantage of this or is it not a big deal? I'm pretty good on the battle tactics and economy stuff but the diplomacy/pope side of things is something that I'm pretty clueless about at the moment. I'm allies with Papal States (was before the pope was elected) and have perfect relationship with them and am only enemies with France. Anything I could do to get the Pope to hurt France?

Cheers!

Yes, attack the French, and use your high Papal rating to avoid getting excommunicated. Then, with any luck the French will counter attack, and get themselves excommunicated, which allows you to destroy them in the glory of Christ. To further increase the chance of the French attacking you, place large armies in their territory, right beside their cities.

Oh, and after the French are excommunicated, you could get the Pope to call a crusade against them.

Your standing will slowly deteriorate. So as Ratwar wrote make use of it. In the end the pope will forget that he is English and will treat you like any other faction. Since you are allies there is a great chance that factions who attack you will get excommunicated.
