UESUGI ~ Way of the Sword and Bow
"I will die fighting, or see my enemies dead before me"
It is 16th century Japan, Uesugi Tomooki, Lord of Kozuke and Musashi, Daimyo of the Uesugi clan plans his next move in his quest to become Seii Tai Shogun, military ruler of Japan.
Ok, so this is going to be my second campaign in what I have decided to call my "Sengoku Jidai Journal`s" series :) The conditions are 1530/Expert/Eliminate All Rival Clans.

Opening Moves
I`m going to abandon Kozuke province as it`s far too exposed, besides Musashi is worth more for income and easier to defend. I`ll expand in an opportunistic manner from there untill I`m safely established. So basically I jave no clear strategy as of yet....
UESUGI ~ Summer 1530 - Summer 1532
Summer, 1530 My wars against the smaller clans on my borders have finally taken a turn for the worse and they are closing in on my palace in Kozuke. I have ordered everyone ready to move by nightfall, we are leaving this place. We will make a new home in Musashi, a new castle for my family is already under construction there. Everything will be burned before we leave, our enemies will find nothing but ashes. I have sent Abe Ujitsugu to request an alliance with the Takeda clan, I need allies if I am to survive.
Autumn, 1530 Our new castle is completed and Musashi is secure, my enemies would be foolish indeed to follow me here, this place is almost impregnable. I have ordered construction of an Archery Dojo, my troops need somewhere to hone their skills. I had barely been living here a month when a delegation arrived from Lord Hojo Ujitsuna.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-HojoEmmissary.jpg
The delegation requested that we agree to an alliance with the Hojo clan and I have agreed. I hope I can count on them not to stab me in the back whilst I am dealing with the bandit scum on my other borders. I received a message from Abe Ujitsugu in Kai province informing me that Lord Takeda Nobutora was quite eager to ally himself with me. I replied, ordering Ujitsugu to seek out Lord Imagawa and negotiate an alliance there too.
Summer, 1531 The Archery Dojo is finished and my Samurai have been hard at work, training both themselves and new recruits to my army. I received another message from Abe Ujitsugu today, Lord Imagawa Yoshimoto has agreed to ally himself with me. I sent another reply, ordering Ujitsugu to head on to Owari province and seek out Lord Oda.
Summer, 1532 Training is going well in Musashi, I have recruited many Samurai skilled in the use of the Bow and continue to attract more to my service. My army is growing steadily, soon I will be ready to take back Kozuke and remove the squatter scum that desecrate my families homeland. I received an urgent message from Abe Ujitsugu, he reports that he has been unable to make contact with Lord Oda. He is unsure exactly how the current set of circumstances came to be but Lord Oda is trapped under siege in his castle in Owari and it would appear that there is no hope of relief. Abe Ujitsugu believes Lord Oda will be dead before the year is out. I have ordered him to return here at once.

Overview
Not really much to report though it appears the Oda are making a sharp exit. I`m going to continue to build up for a while longer before grabbing any other provinces.

Nice...archers are really the way to go, especially with Uesugi. Your oda campaign was epic, I doubt you'll run in to trouble early with this one though, I remember the eastern rebels being a lot easier than the central rebels.
UESUGI ~ Summer 1533 - Summer 1536
Summer, 1533 I have heard reports that the siege in Owari is over and the Oda clan are finished. I freely admit to being amazed that Oda Nobuhide was able to survive under siege for a whole year! Such a man would have made a fantastic ally.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-OdaEliminated.jpg
Autumn, 1534 My son, Norimasa has come of age and joined my army. I have placed a unit of Yari Samurai under his personal command and ordered him to report for duty with my brother, Tomosada. My allies, the Takeda and Imagawa clans are now at war with each other, as I cannot remain allied to both I have informed Lord Yoshitomo that I cannot remain allied to him whilst this conflict is going on, however I will not actively support the Takeda clan.
Winter, 1534 I have turned away an Emmissary from Lord Imagawa, whilst this war is still going on it would not be honourable to be talking to my allie`s enemie`s.
Summer, 1534 We have been victorious in two great battles this summer in Shimosa and Musashi. I have decided it is now time that Norimasa earned some experience on campaign so he accompanied me on my invasion of Shimosa. Tomosada was left to defend Musashi.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-AttackingShimosa.jpg
I formed my army up with Norimasa leading the Yari Spearmen. His orders were to wait for me to draw off the enemy infantry with my charge over the bridge, once they were too far away to stop his crossing he was to lead all the infantry across the bridge into a frontal assault on any who remained to defend.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-AttackingShimosa1.jpg
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-AttackingShimosa2.jpg
Once over the bridge Norimasa charged the only defenders remaining to stop him, a single formation of Samurai Archers. The defenders managed to loose a few volleys before my son made contact with them but casualties were fairly light. By this time I had completely drawn off the enemy spearmen and had worked my way around them into a position where I could hit the Samurai Archers in the rear.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-AttackingShimosa3.jpg
Realising they could not assist their comrades at the bridge the enemy spearmen quickly withdrew. Alone and surrounded the enemy Archers fought bravely but were swiftly cut down.
Meanwhile, back in Musashi, Tomosada had come under attack from our enemies in Kozuke, the Yuki clan.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-MusashiAttacked.jpg
Though outnumbered 2:1, Tomosada had the advantage of terrain and was able to inflict a spectacular defeat on our enemies. My brother personally took the head of the enemy Taisho.
Overview
Fairly easy going so far, but then I suppose spamming archers to defend a bridge province is a no brainer. I`m still looking to expand into the nearby rebel provinces before attacking any other major clans. I shouldn`t have any difficulty repelling any attacks so I can just sit still for a little while and build up my forces without any hassle.
UESUGI ~ Winter 1536 - Winter 1547
Winter, 1536 My peers, Lord Imagawa and Lord Takeda have made peace. Yoshitomo`s Emmissary again requested an audience and I agreed to see him.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-ImagawaEmmissary.jpg
He explained that his master felt no ill will toward me over my decision to break off relations with him at the outbreak of hostilities with the Takeda. He asked If I would now reconsider my position and enter a new alliance. I agreed.
Autumn, 1541 I have spent the last five years buried in work, organising new construction works, training my armies etc. that I had quite forgotten about this journal. Not much of interest has occured these past years, however I received a guest a few months ago who claimed to represent the interests of several towns and villages in Kazusa province. This gentleman was a skilled talker and convinced me to come to the rescue of these places. Apparently ever since their old lord died the people of Kazusa have been plagued by groups of Ronin and Bandits riding roughshod over the countryside, pillaging and looting as they went. I agreed to deal with these miscreants in return for the loyalty of the province. Needless to say the problem has been dealt with and I will be spending this winter here in Kazusa building a new castle. War has broken out again on the edge of my territory, the Lord`s Imagawa and Hojo both blamed each other for a series of raids along their mutual border and the dispute has developed into a full scale confrontation. I have decided to remain faithful to Yoshitomo for the time being, the arrogance of the Hojo Daimyo`s has always offended me.
Autumn, 1542 The war is not going well for Lord Hojo, he sent an emmissary to seek my favour but I would not see the man.
Autumn, 1543 Abe Ujitsugu, my faithful retainer has been murdered at the court of Lord Hojo, I do not know who would have anything to gain by such a move but it is disturbing none the less.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-Ninjaattack.jpg
Imagawa Yoshitomo has now declared war on the Takeda, I have informed him that I cannot remain on friendly terms with him whilst he shows such blatant aggression and disregard to my own friends and allies.
Autumn, 1544 I have invaded Shimotsuki, the Ronin and Bandit forces that have previously made this place their home had come to stop me in the hills but thought better of it once they saw the full magnificence of my army. We have heard nothing of them since.
Winter, 1544 Now that Lord Hojo and Lord Imagawa are once again at peace I have resumed my previous alliance with the Hojo.
Spring, 1546 My second son, Kenshin has come of age this year and like his brother he immediately entered service with my army. Ever since he was a small boy he has shown great promise, and great skill with the bow. He now commands my garrison in Shimotsuke.
Winter, 1547 I have once again entered into an alliance with Lord Imagawa. We have agreed on a mutual offensive into the lands bordering ours in order to clear out any other raiders and bandits etc. He has agreed to assist me in an attack on Mutsu next year.
Overview
Imagawa are on the warpath and for once hav`nt been swiftly destroyed. I don`t want to go to war with them if I can help it as I need them to keep Shimazu busy as I don`t want a predictable half and half face off later on. This just seems like such an easy job so far compared to my Oda campaign.
Well the rebels usually are easier in that side of the map. Takeda or Imagawa will backstab you sooner or later.
looking strong defensively, though it has took its time, i would of abandoned kozuke at the start as well, try and take the rebel provinces around you before imagawa do! :2thumbsup:

With oda gone this could be a short campaign. Looks like the competition will be between you and imagawa. I don't think you can let him afford to take over mutsu dewa echigo etc, although I doubt the ai is capable. Those three alone are an easy 2500 koku or so. The money should allow you to overwhelm takeda and hojo. The only wild card is shimazu, I can see a port jump to kyushu being very effective.
UESUGI ~ Autumn 1548 - Autumn 1549
Autumn, 1548 Barbarians from across the great ocean landed and requested permission to trade their guns for my gold. They wished also to spread the word of their "one true God", whoever that is. I refused their petition, I have no use for their cowardly trinkets and do not wish my peasantry confused by new theology.
Winter, 1548 I have attacked and taken control of Mutsu and as promised my friend, Yoshitomo sent a few units of his elite Samurai Archers to assist.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-AttackingMutsu.jpg
These allies were from Totomi province and handled their bows very well indeed, their reputation is well deserved. After the battle there was a chance for an honourable contest between these men and Samurai from my own Archery school in Musashi. Unfortunately my men were beaten - but there is no dishonour in being beaten by the best. Perhaps the lessons they have learned can be incorporated into our training regime.
Summer, 1549 My friend Imagawa Yoshitomo is dead, he was defeated in distant Hizen by Lord Shimazu, only one of his Hatamoto escaped, carrying his lords head back to Totomi. He informed the new Imagawa lord, Ujizane that he had been honoured to perform the duty of Second to Yoshitomo, who had decided to commit Seppuku rather than risk capture by the Shimazu warriors.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-ImagawaSeppuku.jpg
Autumn, 1549 I have been forced to set my taxes to what would usually be considered punitive levels, I do not wish my people to suffer and this is only a temporary measure but the coffers are empty and I must continue the infastructural programs that have been started across my domain. More of the foreigners came to see me but I gave them the same response as last time.
Overview
Well the rebels are steadily falling before me and the Imagawa are honouring the alliance nicely, I don`t often play campaigns in which I get to fight alongside my allies. My next moves will be to take Echigo and Dewa, though I am going to have to build up a large army, the defenders are vast with huge numbers of archers defending the bridge. So i`ll probably just sit back and build up for a few years. I dare not weaken the defences in Musashi to support an attack on Echigo as both the Hojo and Takeda are hemmed in by myself and the Imagawa. I don`t want them to get any opportunity to "backstab" me as Adam99 believes.
O I thinks its guaranteed that Takeda will have a go sooner or later, as you say he's hemmed in by you and Imagawa. He's bound to go for one of you, hopefully it'll be Imagawa but theres always a chance he'll go for you. Best case scenario is both Hojo and Takeda go for Imagawa, worst case they both go for you. As for Imagawa i'm sure he'll have a few ninja roaming around, and if Hojo and Takeda end up face down in the grass i'm sure Imagawa wont mind letting his ninga practise on your generals and family line....
Well now that Imagawa have been pushed out of Kyushu I may switch to favour the alliance with the Takeda. They still have lands on the other end on Honshu - Suo, Aki and Bingo to be precise, so he may be able to cause some problems for Shimazu. I hope so anyway.
ReluctantSamurai

I tend to agree with adam99.....it's been my experience that neither the Hojo nor the Takeda can be trusted to honor an alliance. In fact, I never form alliances with either unless I absolutely have to.
UESUGI ~ The Battle of Echigo
Spring, 1555 Another long break in my journal as these last few years have been relatively peaceful. I have once again put ink to paper today to record the birth of my newest child, Kagekatsu.
Autumn, 1556 Another barbarian delegation has been turned away. They seem incapable of understanding my lack of interest in anything they have to offer. Likewise they baffle me, their entire lives seem devoted to the pursuit of material riches. I do not understand them, I hope they do not bother me again.
Winter, 1556 After many years of preparation we were finally able to launch our invasions of both Echigo and Dewa. I feel this will be my last offensive as I am feeling my age now, my saddle hurts me on long rides, my back aches constantly and I swear I am losing my hearing! Anyway, I personally led the march on Dewa but didn`t get to fight any battles as the Ronin here took ship and fled to join the pirates on Sado. My son, Kenshin, led the assault with our main army into Echigo. Once again my great ally, Lord Imagawa sent a large force of Archers to help in the attack. Kenshin informs me that the Imagawa soldiers requested the honour of leading the attack across the bridge and my son accepted with one proviso, after the battle was won the Imagawa soldiers would take part in another archery tournament, to which they happily agreed. Kenshin recounted to me that our allies crossed the bridge whilst our own archers covered them from the riverbank. They were able to draw the enemy in close where our archers could cause maximum damage and when the timing was right they feigned a retreat back across the bridge. Sensing victory, the inexperienced enemy Taisho launched himself and his army into pursuit. They were halted on our side by our own Yari Samurai, then when they were fixed in place, our allies counter-charged. Within minutes the enemy commander was dead and his army were fleeing into the hills. Our casualties were light, about 200 killed. On the other hand the enemy army was practically wiped out. In the subsequent tournament my men achieved victory over the Totomi Samurai. A most excellent day!
Spring, 1557 Lord Hojo has died of an illness. His son, Ujiyasu now rules the clan.
Overview
First off, sorry for the lack of screenshots. I took about 12 during the battle but they all seemed to have been corrupted somehow, sort of like a camera film that`s been double exposed. Anyways I`m sitting pretty now, here are a couple of screenies showing the state of play, just wondering if anyone has any thoughts...

Imagawa in his current position is a threat to you. You should probably try to push him out of Kozuke, preferably through covert means and then maybe push for the Shinano/Suruga/Etchu border, once you're strong enough. This will leave you in a strong position. Takeda and Hojo are not to be trusted, so just trample them under foot. Imagawa may get in your way but leaving him there will leave you weakened. If he proves insufficiently strong to hold out against Hojo or Takeda then his lands need to be annexed to yours before the enemy takes advantage of this.
High quality report as usual.
There is a green mass bobbling over Japan from the West as you can see. The Takeda forces in Western Honshû will be history within maximum 1 year I'd guess. As Takeda and Imagawa are blocking your way this might become a tough thing against the Shimazu once they have reached Kyôto. At least in case they eat each other first. I think it is the main question who attacks whom first. :dizzy2:

I don't believe your in any danger from imagawa. It's hard to mount an attack from shinano. I would say take kozuke and then build an army an attack hojo. Musashi and echigo shouldn't require large forces in defense. Hojo often have lots of ashigaru as I recall, whereas the takeda horses could give you trouble. Have to watch out for shimazu!
Cheers for the help guys. As it happens I elected to smash Hojo`s army in Sagami(Huge Battle) before attacking Imagawa. I`ll update tomorrow.
Yes get rid of Hojo, keep an eye on Takeda (they've always been trouble never stick to an alliance, not so bad if its just the convenient thing to do to gain a breathing space, downright annoying when their your only ally!) And Imagawa looks to be in nice position to expand into your territory. Bit of covert ops might be in order there. And the Mean, Green Rolling Machine looks to be up and running!
UESUGI ~ Succession
Autumn, 1559 Lord Takeda is dead. I know he had been suffering from a lingering illness picked up last winter, perhaps he just gave up. His son, Shingen now guides the Takeda. The only thing I know about the new Daimyo is his reputation for aggression, I think the Takeda will be pursuing a more expansionist foreign policy from now on. Anyways, this will be my last entry in this journal, I am simply too old and writing causes me such pain as all the joints in my hands and arms are in constant agony. I will not be much longer for this world.
Summer, 1561 My older brother, Tomooki died of an illness this past spring though I suspect it was suicide by poison. He had been miserable for months and I know he was in constant pain. It has fallen to me now to rule the clan and I will try to make good on our claim to the Shogunate. Tomooki was a wise ruler but lacked the proper motivation to take the Uesugi to Kyoto and make good on our heritage. I will attempt to maintain the web of alliances my brother established but only as long as they serve my purposes. I will not hesitate to destroy the weaker pretenders when their usefulness has passed.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-Succession.jpg
Autumn, 1561 A spy was caught, tortured and executed this week. He revealed he was working for Lord Imagawa, our long term friend and ally. He was "persuaded" to reveal a few secrets. His mission in Musashi was to gain intelligence on troop numbers and movements within my territory but it appears that he was reporting to Lord Hojo aswel. These two clans have signed a secret mutual defence agreement to attempt to curb any further expansion of my own realm. I will of course behave as if I know nothing and continue my correspondence with my peers for now but I have already decided on my strategy. When the time is right I will strike Sagami with full force and cripple the Hojo, this will be followed up with an immediate attack upon the Imagawa, I will not give them time to unite against me.
Summer, 1562 I have ordered my spies to infiltrate Kozuke, there have been murmurs of discontent within the province that they may be able to capitalise on.
Overview
Just a quick update at the moment. Still not alot going on but I have decided on a new strategy for my new Daimyo.
UESUGI ~ Oda Reborn
Autumn, 1563 The attempt to start a revolt in Kozuke has failed. My agents there were unable to achieve any of the goals I set for them before being discovered, three of my agents were killed and the survivors fled to Musashi, they believe that Lord Imagawa was able to discover they were working for me but it would not take a genius to work it out. I will not underestimate the Imagawa`s penchant for this kind of warfare. I will have to destroy them face to face. I ordered Takemata Hirotsuna to take Sado island but he lacked the ships to pursue the fleeing pirates and ronin, he believes they are now in Noto and pose no threat to us.
Spring, 1566 I have a son! I have named him Masamune, the priests told me the boy is destined for greatness.
Autumn, 1566 An announcement from the Emperor declaring his support for the Shimazu clan was received today. The only clan to openly support this is the Takeda, what is Shingen up to?
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-EmperorsupportsShimazu.jpg
Spring, 1567 With most of the western half of Japan under the control of the new Shimazu "Shogunate" I have sent my spies to Shikoku to stir up trouble and report anything of interest. Shikoku is traditionally a hotbed of unrest, especially Tosa. Hopefully I can create problems for Lord Shimazu. My own internal security network in Musashi has caught a spy in the employ of Lord Hojo. Needless to say the man is now dead.
Winter, 1567 Disconcerting news from Shikoku, apparently the team I sent back in spring are all dead or captured, all but one. It seems that Lord Shimazu had decided to decimate the population of the island after taking control and the people have no wish to bring any more pain upon themselves. They pretended to work towards revolt under the guidance of my spies but at the critical moment they turned my men over to Lord Shimazu`s security forces. I am discouraged from attempting this kind of strategy in future as it is costing lives of expensive men and not providing any results.
Winter, 1569 A huge rebellion has started in Omi province. A peasant named Toyotomi Hideyoshi is the ringleader and claims the Oda heritage for himself, many provinces have joined his revolt. I will send agents to investigate and if this man is not merely a poor pretender a new alliance may be on the cards.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-Odareappear.jpg
Spring, 1571 Kenshin has taken his army to Noto and destroyed the ronin and pirates there, he will not be staying though. His orders are to return as soon as possible to Sado and there take ship to Musashi for my long awaited attack on the Hojo will be taking place this summer.
Hideyoshi`s revolt has gained pace and strength. He has defeated the Shimazu in a major battle for control of the Emperor`s palace and now claims the title of Shogun. My youngest nephew, Kagekatsu has entered service with my army and is eager to prove himself. With war with Hojo on the horizon he will get his chance.
Overview
Well I`m just about to attack Hojo. As I said earlier, I want to destroy the large armys at my rear before starting a war with Imagawa, I have a feeling though that my invasion of Sagami(next update) will provoke an aggressive response from everyone in the region.
UESUGI ~ Battle of Sagami
Summer, 1571 I went through with my plan to attack Sagami this summer and have been victorious in a major battle there. The hojo fought valiantly defending their homeland but we were too strong for them.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-AttackingSagami.jpg
We were marching to destroy a small force we had been tracking for three days when we finally made contact with them at an ancient dried up riverbed. I formed my army up along the old watercourse with a mind to envelope the enemy and destroy them but the Hojo were one step ahead. A unit of Cavalry Archers attempted to leave the field but they were intercepted and destroyed by my Yari Cavalry, this would turn out to be part of the enemies ruse to draw me in.Just as my extreme right flank approached the top of the old riverbank hundreds of Hojo Samurai exploded out of the trees, it was an ambush!
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-AttackingSagami2.jpg
My men held up briefly under this pressure, long enough for me to destroy the enemy force in the open and begin to roll up the Hojo`s right flank. At the same time the centre of my line gave way.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-AttackingSagami3.jpg
This was followed swiftly by my right flank. It was not going well It looked as if our venture was doomed.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-AttackingSagami4.jpg
Frantically I organised the troops I had remaining on the left and moved towards the enemy centre, I was going to kill the Hojo Taisho. Though most of my army was now fleeing the Hojo troops were now extremely disorganised and I was able to take advantage. The enemy Taisho realised this and called off the pursuit.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-AttackingSagami5.jpg
This was his first mistake he would not live long enough to make another. My right flank, now free from pursuit swiftly rallied, regrouped and hit the formerly victorious enemy warriors in the rear. It was a massacre.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-AttackingSagami6.jpg
This kicked off a chain reaction amongst the confused Hojo warriors and soon the entire army was in full retreat. I took what cavalry I had remaining and and rode as many of the enemy down as I could before returning to the army. One of my Hatamoto trampled the Hojo Taisho under the hooves of his mount.
Autumn, 1571 After sacking Sagami and burning everything to the ground I returned to Musahi to find Kenshin and his army waiting for me. Now we are ready for total war!
Overview
My first major battle of the campaign and it`s been a long time coming. It was almost a complete disaster too but Tomosada managed to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat. In the middle of the map the new Oda regime has managed to expand very quickly. I am going to wait 1 turn before attacking Imagawa, I just want to see if Takeda will now attack Hojo.
Tide turned impressively, waiting for more. :2thumbsup:

Those 120 man unit battles always look so epic...
Good going. Oda should occupy Shimazu and draw him off, keeps that part of the map interesting, and gives you time to finish off Hojo.
beware Imagawa ninja's. I'm guessing it was them that got your emissary earlier on?
More than likely it was Imagawa, I`m catching 1 or 2 spies/ninja`s of theirs in my territory every year now.
@ Sasaki Kojiro, more epicness to come this evening mate. I`m just typing up the next update now.
Yeah, I'm sure he'll get his soon enough. Look forward to the next update.

Great job at Sagami. You really turned that one around.
I've never seen Shimazu get to the emperor's province before. You might be facing a Shimazu horde when you're done with your other enemies.

Those 120 man unit battles always look so epic...
Totally agree. That's why I prefer fighting like that.
UESUGI ~ Second Battle of Sagami
Winter, 1571 I have attacked Imagawa in Kozuke, he was not prepared and fled to Shinano, the Uesugi homeland is ours again. My ally, Takeda Shingen has promised his support for me and has declared war on the Hojo and Shimazu clans. We will launch a joint attack into Sagami in the summer and finish off Ujiyasu, destroying the Hojo clan.
Summer, 1572 We have fought and won two great battles this summer in Sagami and in Musashi.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-2ndSagami.jpg
Both were glorious affairs and I shall record the events in Musashi first. After last winter`s success in Kozuke, I decided to remain there with my army and secure the province against any possible counter move by the Imagawa clan. However I should have been watching for a move against Musashi, it was now defended by Kagekatsu`s garrison whilst Kenshin attacked Sagami. Lord Imagawa personally led his army against us and encountered Kagekatsu`s defenders at an important rivercrossing. The enemy numbered 1,400 whilst Kagekatsu could only muster 900.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-defendingmusashi1.jpg
Imagawa ordered his Yari Cavalry across the bridge but they were not fast enough and were stopped by two units of Yari Samurai. Unable to move back as they were blocked by their own infantry crossing to support them, the cavalry were totally wiped out. The whole time the enemy was under a hail of arrow fire and suffered dreadfully. Kagekatsu held a third of his force in reserve to use at the critical moment.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-defendingmusashi2.jpg
Unable to break the blockade, Lord Imagawa now committed his entire force to the attack on the bridge. With casualties beggining to mount and his troops beginning to tire, Kagekatsu now committed his fresh reserves. More than 2,000 men now slaughtered each other over a few metres of ground.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-defendingmusashi3.jpg
The slaughter continued for an hour, there was no movement backwards or forwards. Men simply stood where they were killed as there was no room for them to fall. Lord Imagawa, in his eagerness to breakthrough found himself isolated with a few bodyguards amongst the mass of our army. With nowhere to run and no hope of help he was cut down. His head was removed and thrown into his own troops, on seeing this they promptly turned tail and fled. Kagekatsu did not follow, his men were exhausted and could barely move.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-defendingmusashi4.jpg
Meanwhile, in Sagami, Kenshin had united with the Takeda army sent to assist him in the final destruction of the Hojo clan.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-2ndSagami1.jpg
Most of the Hojo forces took cover in the trees on the hillside with only Ujiyasu himself and what cavalry he could field remaining in the open to skirmish with Kenshin as he advanced up the left flank. The Takeda moved to attack the main force head on.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-2ndSagami2.jpg
As our force was getting into position to push into the woods from the left, Lord Ujiyasu rode alongside taunting our warriors, daring them to come face him. Kenshin believes that Ujiyasu must have beeen resigned to his fate and was merely attempting to make a good death for himself. His challenge was met by Kenshin`s Heavy Cavalry who thundered out to meet the Hojo Daimyo and his bodyguards.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-2ndSagami3.jpg
Ujiyasu`s wish was granted and he earned an honourable death, his 11 warriors killing 27 of our elite cavalry.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-2ndSagami4.jpg
With all the Hojo cavalry now driven off or killed, Kenshin ordered the attack into the trees. Most of the remaining Hojo Samurai decided to meet death out in the open rather than skulk in the woods. As they emerged, they were met with a storm of arrows, the few that made contact with the infantry were swiftly cut down. They died bravely, they died like true Samurai.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-2ndSagami5.jpg
The remaining Ashigaru attempted to flee but were anihilated by our cavalry with only a handful escaping. They are now besieged.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-2ndSagami6.jpg
With the Hojo clan destroyed, my total victory has been brought closer. If I can count on the coninued support of the Takeda then I believe the Imagawa will not be able to stand against us either.

Overview
I apologise if anyone has been waiting for the next update, I was distracted watching Dances with Wolves, an epic film. Anyways, back on the subject. Woohoo! Hojo are eliminated and Imagawa are next on my hitlist. I`m going to keep attacking them and keep an eye on Takeda, I don`t want to contain him, so i`ll probably leave him room to expand into 1 or 2 provinces on my border, I still want his armies keeping Shimazu busy at the other end of Honshu.
Just epic. There is no other word. :book:

I absolutely HAVE to play on 120 man units next time. It's been a while since I had one of those bridge battles with a giant mass of men who fight for 10 minutes straight.
You are honestly a STW god.
UESUGI ~ Autumn 1572 - Autumn 1576
Autumn, 1572 Kenshin has ended the siege in Sagami and destroyed the last of the rebels holed up there. I have taken Shinano with no resistance.
Winter, 1572 Shingen has abandoned his provinces around Aki. Without his armies fighting the Shimazu I`m not sure what further use my allegiance to the Takeda will be. I will watch them for now and see how they continue to fare against the Imagawa.
Summer, 1573 News arrived today from my spies in Kai, Shingen has made a secret peace agreement with Ieyasu, the Imagawa Daimyo. I am resolved now to an attack upon Kai for which I will be ready in the coming autumn.
Autumn, 1573 Kai is now mine and Shingen did not even lift a finger to defend it, he fled to Suruga. I have dispatched an emmissary to Wakasa to request an alliance with the Oda clan, currently they are allied to the Shimazu but that is likely to change very soon with Shimazu on the warpath.
Spring, 1574 I have just received a message from my man in Wakasa, he has succeeded in negotiating the alliance with Hideyoshi but also informs me that it will probably be worth nothing as the Oda just lost their largest army in battle to the Shimazu this past winter. I only hope that me new ally can keep the Shimazu occupied long enough for me to wipe out the Takeda.
Winter, 1575 Kagekatsu led his army into Izu to oust the Takeda but met no rsistance. I don`t blame the enemy for retreating, Izu is worthless and I would hate to die to defend it. Kenshin was also in action this winter, he attacked Shingen in Suruga but the resulting battle could only be decided as inconclusive. The Takeda had chosen an excellent defensive position and Kenshin was reluctant to engage in a costly head on attack. As it happens, my nephew was able to inflict much damage to the Takeda before a blizzard forced him to withdraw back to Kai. His supply lines were not secure and we can easily take Suruga next year.
Spring, 1576 Well the alliance with the Oda clan has been short lived. I received word today that Hideyoshi was defeated and with nowhere to run committed Seppuku rather than be captured. The Shimazu now control most of Japan and my patrols in Shinano have seen samurai flying the banner of Shimazu Yoshimoto just inside the border of Mino. It is only a matter of time now.
Summer, 1576 A vast Shimazu army is now camped within the borders of Mino, my agents estimate 4,000 infantry and about 1,000 cavalry. This force greatly outnumbers the force I have in Shinano, the obvious location for the first Shimazu move against me. There was, however, a ray of hope in the news I received with my spie`s report. It seems that Lord Shimazu`s only heir was killed in the final battle with the Oda clan. If I can only tempt him personally into battle then I can make good on my claim to the title of Shogun. Kenshin and Kagekatsu attacked Suruga and this time destroyed the entire enemy army. Shingen himself died during the fighting, ambushed by a unit of Warrior monks, when he tried to escape he was caught by our cavalry and killed. The Takeda are no more.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-TakedaEliminated.jpg
Kagekatsu has joined me in Shinano and left Kenshin in Suruga to protect our flank against any move Ieyasu may attempt from Totomi. I have dispatched my emmissary to Totomi to see if Ieyasu is willing to make peace, I cannot spare any forces to finish him and he is also at war with Lord Shimazu.
Autumn, 1576 Well as expected Lord Shimazu attacked Shinano with all the forces he could muster but did not make an appearance himself.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-DefendingShinano.jpg
We managed to achieve a victory but at massive cost, losing more than half of our army and Kagekatsu whilst inflicting relatively few casualties in comparison upon the enemy. I cannot furnish you with the exact details as during the early stages of the battle when it looked as though we may lose, my bodyguard dragged me from the field. All senior commanders were killed so there is no conclusive picture of events after my departure. What I do know is that the battle quickly degenerated into scattered skirmishes between small pockets of opposing forces. In this regard my men had the advantage and new the terrain better. Unable to pin my troops down and with their Taisho killed the Shimazu warriors withdrew, I suspect they will be back in force very soon. Ieyasu has responded to my request for a ceasfire, the head of my former emmissary carrying the reply.

Overview
Ok, yes, my Daimyo ran away :furious3: Shinano was just one of those battles where everything seems to go spectacularly wrong. Though on a massive hill my archers singularly failed to do much harm, my infantry were unable to hold at the top of the hill after the Shimazu infantry exhausted themselves with the climb. The same enemy infantry just would not rout, not even after being ambushed in the rear by warrior monks and to top it all off my 3 brand new units of CA refused to skirmish :wall: they just stood by and watched the enemy Nagi cav walk up and kill them. I lost 2,000 men for about 1,000 kills, only achieving victory by having my reinforcement archers hold out in the scattered pockets of woodland untill the timer ran out. I am now frantically training replacements but if I lose another battle in Shinano then I think the game will be up. Sorry once again for lack of screenshots of the battle, I was too busy with the micro management.
Okay, okay, enough already. I'll re-install STW tonight.

Harsh very harsh...seems to me you need kenshin in Shinano. Was it heavy rain to make your archers ineffective like that?
The same enemy infantry just would not rout, not even after being ambushed in the rear by warrior monks...
I haven't checked before posting this, but I think you're playing on expert? If so that may be the cause. The AI get quite a morale bonus on expert and when you add that to the bonuses from buildings and the general you can end up with almost totally unroutable units.
Ouch, bit of a nasty one that. Think your going to have churn out replacements and dig in. If Shimazu's got no heirs left you'll have to try and track him down and try and catch him.
Can you somehow hit him into his backland?
UESUGI ~ Second Battle of Shinano
Winter, 1576 The Shimazu came at Shinano again as I knew they would. I believed they would wait untill spring to start another offensive but I had everything prepared nonetheless. Reinforcements had poured into Shinano for the last few weeks from Kozuke, Kai, Echigo and Musashi. This time there was not such a disparity in numbers, though in that regard the enemy still had the edge.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-SecondShinano.jpg
We met the enemy at the same location, as anyone wishing to move through Shinano to the Kanto must use this pass. I even deployed my army in a similar formation to the previous engagement, this time though I had secreted some Yari Cavalry in a position where they could quickly move unseen into the rear of the enemy. As the Shimazu came forward, my line fell back up the hill shortly to draw them in and my Yari Cavalry took their place overlooking the enemy advance.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-SecondShinano1.jpg
As their front line approached they hesitated in their advance, I think they could plainly see they were going to have a real fight on their hands this time. They didnt begin to move forward again untill their commander came to the fore to personally lead the attack.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-SecondShinano2.jpg
The Yari Cavalry lying in wait didn`t have to wait too long to make themselve`s useful. My Cavalry Archers, mauled as they were had managed to draw out an entire unit of Samurai Archers. The Yari Cavalry pounced and smashed into the rear of the unit whilst the the Cavalry Archers charged the front. The enemy archers were swiftly butchered.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-SecondShinano3.jpg
Back at the frontline and in the meatgrinder, the Shimazu Taisho reconsidered his chances and decided to flee. He didn`t get very far before being impaled through the back with a 9` long Yari.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-SecondShinano4.jpg
The rest of his army followed their dead leader`s example and the Yari Cavalry made short work of them too. A few Shimazu mounted units still roamed the area but the skirmishing that followed wasn`t very serious.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-SecondShinano5.jpg
This spectacular victory has temporarily shifted the balance of power in this region in my favour. I must now maintain the initiative and strike back at the Shimazu to maximise the potential gains from this battle. As soon as the weather improves Lord Shimazu will find me knocking on his door.
Spring, 1577 Preparations continue for my counter-attack into Shimazu held Mino next month. I received an envoy from Tokugawa Ieyasu today, I had not forgotten the insult he showed me in sending back my last envoy`s head and I felt very much like returning the favour but decided to be the better man.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-Imagawanewalliance.jpg
Lord Imagawa had time to reflect on his rash behaviour last year and decided the time had indeed come to end of our dispute. I agreed as I can always deal with him(the Imagawa) after I have finished with the Shimazu. The envoy also brought information - agents working for Ieyasu, deep behind enemy lines have engineered uprisings across Shimazu territory.
Summer, 1577 I had been informed that Lord Shimazu was still in Mino when I attacked but was disappointed to find he was not commanding the army that opposed me, he had in fact moved to join a larger force in Hida. I destroyed his army here and will order an attack on Hida when I`m sure there are no other enemy troops lurking in the area to cause any problems in our rear. Word of these two defeats inflicted on my enemy must have reached the ears of the peasant class as the uprising against Lord Shimazu appears to be growing.

Overview
Things have improved slightly and I`m gearing up to punish Shimazu very soon.
@ Sasaki Kojiro - Kenshin is being sent directly to the front mate and is being given command of my largest forces, his +3 honour bonus is going to do very nicely. With regards to the weather in the first battle of Shinano, it was a fine day.
@ Caravel - Yes I am playing on expert mate, though I usually find that hitting engaged enemies in the backside will still rout all but the hardest enemy troops. The guys my monks hit must have been knackered cos my guys already fighting them were tired and they hadn`t had to march uphill but I barely made a dent. However I didn`t realise untill I just rechecked, I thought I was fighting a rank 2 general, actually it was rank 4. Still I would of expected my monks to cause alot of damage.
@ Adam99 - Pinning him down is the hard thing to do at the moment lol. However all the revolts going on in his territory may really help me in that regard.
@ Patdj - Believe me, I`ve tried mate. I gave up after all my agents kept getting instantly caught and executed lol :wall: I`m just going to stick to good old stabbing him in the face
Cheers again guys, I may have another update in a few hours, otherwise it will be tomorrow.

Doing nicely...a win in Hida and another in totomi and you should be shogun.
UESUGI ~ At Last We Meet
Autumn, 1577 We launched a two-pronged attack on Lord Shimazu in Hida, me from Mino and Kenshin leading the army from Shinano. After apparently accepting our offer of battle, Shimazu Yoshimoto deployed his army but at the last minute withdrew from the field, concious of the terrain, and fearing a possible ambush, Kenshin advised patience. My enemy is fast running out of places to run to, it is only a matter of time, even so, I am getting old now and I wish to see my enemy dead before I leave this world. My spies have since reported that the Shimazu Daimyo is now in Echizen and though he is on the run he still maintains careful control over his forces elsewhere in the region. Proof of this came in an urgent dispatch from Date Teramune, the garrison commander in Shinano. Apparently the fake battle in Hida was just a ploy to keep us occupied whilst his forces in Mikawa launched another attack upon Shinano. Teramune reports that he won a spectacular victory, claiming 1,100 heads for the loss of only 150. I do not believe that my opponent can mount any more attacks for the time being, not from Mikawa anyway as Ieyasu has informed me of his intent to take Mikawa back for his clan, he alsorequested we renew our two clans old alliance. With the Shimazu currently the much larger threat, I have agreed to Ieyasu`s proposal.
Spring, 1578 Well news arrived of a new heir to the Shimazu throne, a boy by the name of Muneharu. I and my ally, Ieyasu, believed that Yoshimoto was childless. It matters not anyway, new blood cannot save the Shimazu now. I sent Kenshin to pacify Etchu, there had been many reports of bandit activity in the province and I did not want these vagrants raiding my provinces whilst my armies are occupied on the frontier. Kenshin reports that the bandits have fled to Noto.
Summer, 1579 I was taken by surprise today, a message arrived by pidgeon from Sado. I am shocked to learn that the garrison there has been defeated by a small conglomeration of pirates and ronin from Noto calling themselves the "Homma" clan. The men there are trapped under siege and have requested immediate assistance. If Sado is lost my heartlands will be wide open to pirate raids and banditry - reinforcements are on route and should arrive in time to relieve the garrison and drive the invaders back into the sea.
Autumn, 1579 Inspired to action by the site of the Uesugi banner flying from ships entering the harbour, the besieged in Sado sallied and combined with the reinforcements on the ships destroyed the Homma invaders. This action was combined with an attack by Kenshin on Noto to destroy the main pirate base. This objective was achieved but not before the pirates themselves were able to board there ships and escape, a fast ship was sent to shadow the enemy flotilla, it reported back to Kenshin a few days later that the pirates had dispersed and landed in various bays along Shimazu`s coastline. They are his problem now.
Autumn, 1580 After a year distracted with minor problems like the pirates etc. I can now return my focus to my enemy in Echizen. I have reinforced my army in Hida and Kenshin has defeated a large Shimazu contingent in Kaga, the remnants are now trapped under siege and will not be able to assist their master when I attack in the coming spring.
Spring, 1581 I am happier than I have been for many years. The attack on Echizen went ahead as planned. Yoshimoto had no choice but to face me.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofEchizen.jpg
This was not to be an easy battle, the terrain was perfectly suited to defence and the enemy knew there could be no escape for them. The beast is always more dangerous when cornered. Shimazu deployed his forces with his right flank anchored on some extremely high ground with a perfect view over the field of battle, his other flank was nestled safely in an area of woodland. On the right there was plenty of room for my cavalry to manouver but their bows were less than effective against the cover provided by the trees.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofEchizen1.jpg
My adversary saw this as more of a threat than I meant it to be and weakened his right flank in response. I didn`t wait for him to realise his mistake and ordered my Warrior Monks to drive the enemy archers off of the high ground. Credit is due to the archers, they held out for a longer time than I thought but in the end the Monks ferocity was too much for them and they fled. Back on the my right, the Cavalry Archers got careless and were ambushed by Yari Cavalry hidden in the woods, most of my mounted troops escaped but casualties were heavy. Not realising he was already too late Lord Shimazu returned to his right flank to stop the rout but he was unsupported and isolated. I saw my chance and took, shouting a charge, I led my Hatamoto into combat with my opposite number and his personal guard. At 67, this was a bone jarring experience to say the least, but exhilirating all the same. Yoshimoto had just finished putting a monk to the sword when he saw me coming, I called to him "Yoshimoto Shimazu Sama, I am Uesugi Tomosada Sama, I am your nemesis. Face me now and die like a man or flee like the dog you are!", he replied "Give it up old man. Surely you are getting too old for this?" I`ll admit I had to stifle a chuckle at this, Yoshimoto was only two years younger then me. "But seeing as you are resolved to die today I will gladly send you on your way into the next life." We immediately set to at one another but i`ll admit it was no spectacular affair, two old men swinging swords at each other is far from glorious. Our men stood by and watched calmly, a sharp intake of breath from one of Yoshimoto`s guards was the only reaction when I put my enemy to the sword. He died without a word.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofEchizen3.jpg
With Yoshimoto dead his guards immediately asked my men to perform the duty of Second`s for them as they committed Seppuku. My men agreed and happily sent them to meet their master. By now the rest of my army had surrounded the woods and were fighting hard to end the Shimazu resistance. A large group of enemy Samurai broke through the line towards the body of their master, perhaps they wished to recover it or at least die beside their Lord. They didn`t get the chance, before they could get very far they were cut off by my reserves and wiped out.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofEchizen4.jpg
The day after the battle I got word from Kenshin that the siege in Kaga had been completed and the Shimazu troops there exterminated. There is now no Shimazu force on this half of the island that can threaten me. Now I must track down Muneharu and finish this war once and for all.
Overview
Yay, Lord Shimazu is dead but annoyingly an heir pops out of the woodwork at the last minute. I`m actually quite enjoying these battles against the Shimazu and I`m looking forward to a few more before the campaign is over. I have no radical plans now, at the moment I just want to find any large Shimazu armies, engage them and destroy them. I havn`t decided yet whether or not to destroy Imagawa. What do you guys think?
Nicely written.
As for Imagawa I would spare him as long as he is not a major thread and you can control his movements with a reasonable number of garrisons.
UESUGI ~ Winter 1581 - Autumn 1583
Winter, 1581 I have attacked and taken Wakasa from the Shimazu clan. This success was followed by Kenshin removing the rebel army from Mino.
Spring, 1582 Though the war with the Shimazu is going well, I am not convinced that they are about to roll over and die. Therefore, I have sent a small, mounted raiding party heading east into enemy Talima, they are carrying a small supply of pidgeons to carry messages back to me. They are to report enemy troop strengths and where possible, sabotage enemy infastructure whilst also attmepting to locate the Shimazu Daimyo. My son, Masamune has reached manhood and entered service with my army. I have ordered him to Shinano where he will take command of an elite unit of Cavalry Archers, he will also take overall command over the garrison there.
Summer, 1582 Maruoka castle in Wakasa has fallen to my forces. The first message from the raiders reported that they have encountered no enemy forces in Tajima and that they have burned all the farmland they passed on the way to Inaba. The raiding party have once again reported no enemy resistance in Inaba, finding nothing of value worth destroying. They will cross the border into Mimasaka in a few days time.
Autumn, 1582 Another message from the raiders, Mimasaka has suffered greatly under Shimazu rule and the province is mostly burnt out villages. There was no word of Muneharu.
Winter, 1582 Masamune has united the Shinano garrison with reinforcements from Musashi and Kai and has moved to Mino in response to a sudden surge of enemy activity in Owari.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-Winter1582.jpg
The raiding party has sent a message from Bizen, they have still not encountered any sizable enemy garrisons. They found nothing of value again but they did manage to torch a line of borderforts.
Spring, 1583 The raiders passed through Sanuki without incident and are heading to Iyo.
Summer, 1583 The raiders report great success in Shikoku, a mine was burnt out in Iyo and they put most of the provinces farmland to the torch. With no enemy garrisons at all on the island they are operating with a free hand. I have ordered them to take a ship to Kyushu and report to me immediately upon landing. Still no word of Shimazu Muneharu.
Autumn, 1583 Well there has been no word from the raiders for over a month now, I can only assume they have been caught and/or killed. However, I now know the location of Muneharu - he has taken command of the forces in Owari. Though I wish to bring a speedy conclusion to this war by killing Muneharu, I am not going to mount any serious attempt to attack the province as it is perfectly suited for defensive warfare. I have attacked Omi whilst Kenshin and Masamune move into Owari. They have been ordered not to press for a battle, only to keep the Shimazu forces from leaving to support Omi.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-AttackingOwariandOmi.jpg
My forward scouts first caught sight of the enemy army at around midday and immediately began harrassing them as they deployed to intercept our main army. Screened by the trees, the Cavalry Archers were able to inflict significant damage to the elements in the rear of the shimazu force whilst sustaing few casualties from the return fire.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-Omi1.jpg
With men dropping like flies and with no light cavalry to counter my mounted units, the enemy Taisho decided on a tactical withdrawal. This is a tricky operation in the best of times, but with my Cavalry so close it ended up as a full scale rout.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-Omi2.jpg
We have now almost completely surrounded Owari. Mino was attacked by a small party of Shimazu samurai that crept across the mountains but they were practically wiped out by a single unit of Cavalry Archers. My defenders took 230 heads and lost only 10 men themselves.
Overview
Though it looks like Shimazu is surrounded I am fully expecting him to run for it to another province when I attack Owari. I`m gonna build up a little more in Mino as if he does stay and fight I can expect heavy casualties from crossing the bridges. If he does stay and I kill him, I`ll take Yamashiro before finishing off the Imagawa.

Raiding is so much fun... you get to trash his buildings and get koku from it.
The attack in Owari may not be so bad - the AI often gets very confused by the two bridges.
I agree :) I actually forgot to mention that it was you that gave me the idea mate. Cheers!

It's been my experience that the AI will attack the right bridge (on your right as defender). It tends to defend the right bridge (on your right as attacker) while keeping the bulk of its armies back on the hill until you begin to cross.
I dunno if any of you have experienced the bug where AI troops get hung up on the buildings in the center of the map when attacking?!? If so, there is a modified map available where those buildings are removed. Nothing worse than losing a battle where the troops just sit staring at each other across the river:furious3:

That's good news! I play with the timer on so I just wait till it runs out but I'd like to have the map in any case.
edit:The map is in the "nobunaga's ambition" campaign hosted on the org if anyone is interested.

Yep.....that's the one. I don't play with the timer, so up until I found that map, I had to cross a few units over to attack the AI troops to get them moving. A royal PITA.......
Great fights you've had, It would be nice to see some faction other than shimazu at the end, but there in such a good position it isnt that possible, and there rebellion must have ruined there income, i have no doubts that you'll win
You may however want to use your leader more sparingly, had a force cut you off at mino he could of been in danger.
I`m not worried about losing my Daimyo mate, I have an heir and spare :laugh4:
I`m not worried about losing my Daimyo mate, I have an heir and spare :laugh4:
well it may do you a favor if he dies come to think of it, doesn't your next leader have a 6 command :clown:
Yeah, Uesugi Kenshin is the current heir. However, it looks like my current Daimyo will be Shogun at the age of 72! I`ll let you know tomorrow
Great stuff. Just keep him pinned in Owari and go raiding, see if they try to break out, if not steam in there.
UESUGI ~ Battle of Owari Summer 1584
Spring, 1584 I have been forced to abandon Omi province in the face of a truly massive Shimazu incursion. I couldn`t risk being isolated so far from reinforcements and so I moved to Mino to link up with Kenshin.
Summer,1584 With the Shimazu forces building in Omi, Owari was left weakened and we sensed the time was right for an attack. Kenshin and Masamune led most of our forces in the invasion whilst I remained behind to defend Mino against a possible attack from Omi. After a little persuasion I was able to gain assistance in this endeavour from Lord Imagawa, who promised to personally lead a force of his most elite Samurai to support us. I granted overall command for this particular campaign to Masamune.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofOwari.jpg
Owari is always a tricky proposition when attacking. There is a river which no would-be conquerer can avoid crossing if they wish to gain access to the heart of the province. Masamune moved along the north bank looking for somewhere his army could cross, all the while being shadowed by the Shimazu defenders on the opposite bank. After a weeks march a suitable location was found where two major bridges cross the river only a couple of hundred metres apart. Crossing here would make it more difficult for the Shimazu as they would have to secure both bridges and so be forced to react to our moves. Masamune waited a day for the Imagawa force to arrive then began his attack with a an attack across the lefthand bridge with Cavalry Archers. Moving quicker than the enemy could respond they were able to cross unhindered. Almost immediately things began to go wrong. The cavalry were ordered to move out on the extreme left of the Shimazu line, through the trees along that flank and make a long loop around to the rear of the enemy, unfortunately Lord Shimazu must have suspected a move like this and had hidden his most elite skirmishers in the very same woods - the cavalry rode into an ambush.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofOwari1.jpg
Seeing the cavalry in trouble, Masamune ordered an immediate assault with his infantry and they hurled themselves across the bridge. By now Lord Shimazu had placed a sizeable force of his own infantry to block any such move. Our Warrior Monks and No-Dachi impacted upon the Shimazu Naginata blocking the bridge exit. Masamune made the mistake of committing almost all the infantry at his disposal to this attack leaving only a single unit of Naginata to provide a covering force if the attack foundered. Fairly soon it was obvious that the attack had failed. Lord Imagawa saw this and tried to rescue the situation, he crossed the bridge behind our men and tried to organise a withdrawal but he was struck from his saddle by an arrow and killed instantly. This caused our men to panic and they all fled back across to our side.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofOwari3.jpg
Seeing their Lord cut down the Imagawa Samurai went berserk, flying across the bridge through our fleeing troops, they made contact with the enemy and stopped them counter-attacking our position.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofOwari4.jpg
However, they fared little better than our own troops serving only to now draw Lord Shimazu into an attack, and into range of our own archers who began to take a large tally of enemy warriors. Masamune had been able to rally our infantry and now had them positioned ready to receive the charge. Masamune himself had to move swiftly to the bridge on his right flank with a force of archers to repel a second Shimazu crossing there.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofOwari4-1.jpg
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofOwari5.jpg
Both of the Shimazu attacks on the bridges were repulsed and the enemy suffered greatly for it. With our army now in tatters, and with a fresh wave of enemy reinforcements coming over the horizon, Kenshin advised Masamune to order the retreat. This was done, though Masamune took all remaing Cavalry Archers back across the bridge to disrupt the approaching enemy for as long as possible so our troops could leave unhindered.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofOwari6.jpg
Masamune stayed untill all their arrows were used up then rejoined the army heading back to Mino. Though we were defeated we had destroyed a large chunk of the Shimazu`s most powerful army, the enemy certainly would not be strong enough to mount any attacks of their own for some time now. A short time after the battle I received a message from Nobuyasu, the Imagawa Daimyo, informing me that he was now the new master of the clan and that he would continue to offer his clan`s support in our ongoing struggle.
Overview
Huge battle tonnes of casualties, more than I was expecting, and the Shimazu Daimyo slipped through my fingers. Anyways, I`ll attack again as soon as I have reinforcements. But the rest of the campaign looks pretty straight forward - keep attacking untill he has no one left then squish Imagawa.
Unlucky with the CA getting ambushed, but thats a chunk of Shimazu's army gone, guess it depends how easily he can get replacements in. Maybe try hitting him in Owari every couple of seasons.
UESUGI ~ Battle of Mino
Winter, 1584 I did not believe the Shimazu had the strength to launch an attack upon us so soon after the mauling in Owari during the summer, but attacked us they have.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-DefendingMino.jpg
The speed of the enemy`s attack took me off guard. I just managed to get the army into position to block the Shimazu advance in time to meet the first elements of my opponents army, led by Lord Shimazu himself.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-DefendingMino1.jpg
After some vicous fighting all along my front line, Lord Shimazu was able to push me off of the defendable position but in doing so he drove himself further and further into my own ranks. I had suffered massive casualties by this point but I had my enemy surrounded and he had not realised his own supporting infantry had fled the field. With death rapidly approaching, the Shimazu Daimyo fought like a wild beast and was eventually able to hack his way free, his remaining bodyguards staying behind to delay my own troops with nearby archers covering his escape.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-DefendingMino2.jpg
In the distance I could see Shimazu reinforcemenys emerging through the snow. Encouraged by the sight of my own reinforcements moving up behind our line, my men forgot their weariness and wounds and retook their previous position blocking the Shimazu army. What followed was a long drawn out slaughter as two immovable objects ground each other into dust. In the end the weather began to worsen and night slowly crept over the horizon. The Shimazu commanders still on the field decided to disengage and head home, we lacked the strength or inclination to follow.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-DefendingMino3.jpg
The days was ours but my men had paid a heavy price and Lord Shimazu had slipped through my grasp once again. His good fortune cannot last forever.
Overview
It`s been a little while since the last update, sorry about that - I`ve been busy at work :wall: Sorry again for this being such a short one too. Anyways, another big battle with tonnes of carnage and another close shave for the Shimazu. I still have plenty of forces in the area so I`m going to hit Owari again with everything I have next season, hopefully Shimazu will not survive.
I wish you good luck.
In comparison to the Shimazu I fought when being Hojo yours is a really tough one. :help:
They can't have that many men surely, presumably they've put down the rebellions and have shipped men over, another couple of battles like that should bleed them dry.
UESUGI ~ None Can Dispute the Dominance of Our Clan Spring 1586
Spring, 1585 Kenshin, with the promise of support from Lord Imagawa launched a final all out attack on Owari. His objective was to destroy the Shimazu army and kill the enemy Daimyo - we could not afford to allow him to escape with his army once again. Kenshin crossed the border into Owari province totally unnopposed, the Shimazu obviously thinking to stop us at the river once more. It was there we were to rendevous with our Allies, however our forward scouts found no sign of the promised support, only the full force of the Shimazu clan waiting across the river.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-2ndBattleofOwari1.jpg
They were deployed directly between the two main bridges so as to easily defend against any effort Kenshin would make on either crossing. With no signs of previous battle to account for the disappearance of our allies, and scouts reporting no sign of another army for miles around Kenshin realised we had been betrayed by Lord Imagawa. My "ally" had obviously hedged his bets on the Shimazu destroying my army in Owari. This was confirmed when a detachment from Mino arrived informing Kenshin that a combined Shimazu and Imagawa force had taken the Mino garrison by surprise. With his route back home cut off and the only way to go being forward, Kenshin decided to go ahead with an immediate attack. To achieve this he divided his forces into two equal groups. The left flank commanded by him personally would be the main assault wing and comprised all the armies elite Warrior Monks and No-Dachi swordsmen, and was supported by half of the Archers and one unit of Yari Samurai. The other wing on the right flank was comprised of the remaining infantry, five units of Yari Samurai and the rest of the Archers. Kenshin started the attack on the right and ordered the spearmen across the bridge. Reacting as expected, Lord Shimazu committed a massive chunk of his army to defend on his left, our right. Seeing Lord Shimazu falling into his trap Kenshin ordered the left wing to advance across the left bridge, screened by another unit of spearmen. A small enemy detachment was able to react to this move on the left but was hit with a withering fire from the archers covering the crossing then torn to shreds by the Monks and Swordsmen.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-2ndBattleofOwari2.jpg
The vast bulk of the Shimazu army was now caught in the middle of a classic pincer movement. A few enemy troops towards the rear of their formation were able to escape the coming destruction but the rest honourably stood their ground.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-2ndBattleofOwari3.jpg
Realising the result was now a foregone conclusion, the Shimazu Lord attempted to extricate himself from the battle before Kenshin`s left and right wings completely encircled his army. Seeing their lord panicked, all sense of order disentegrated within the enemy ranks as they attempted to join him in flight.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-2ndBattleofOwari4.jpg
My enemy, Lord Shimazu was unable to escape, his body being found on the field impaled like a pincushion. The remnants of his army were able to flee to the docks and take their ships back to Kyushu.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-ShimazuEliminated.jpg
They no longer concern me, with no clear successor to lead the clan the senior Shimazu commanders will soon begin to sqauble amongst themselves. The only thing standing in my way to the Shogunate is the betrayer, Lord Imagawa..
Spring, 1586 We held off on the attack for a year, all the while refusing to meet a steady stream of Imagawa diplomats, desperate to sue for peace. Once the army had secured everything in Owari and I ordered Kenshin to move into Mikawa and evict the Imagawa army there.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-AttackingMikawa.jpg
The small enemy army was able to block Kenshin`s advance at a river crossing just inside the border. Not wishing to waste any time, my heir ordered an immediate attack across the bridge to brush aside the insignificant enemy force.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofMikawa1.jpg
The Imagawa commander realised he would not be able to stop such a juggernaut and tried to retreat to his castle but was caught on the fly. He was able to mount a small delaying action so some of his troops could escape but he was soon killed, achieving only a small delay in Kenshins advance.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofMikawa2.jpg
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofMikawa3.jpg
Whilst Kenshin was fighting in Mikawa, I personally led our army in Shinano in an attack upon Lord Imagawa in his heartland of Totomi.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-AttackingTotomi.jpg
It didn`t take long to find the Imagawa army. They deployed in a long line across from us along the route of my advance. The chosen battlefield was pretty flat with no features of any particular tactical importance. My enemy had obviously decided to resolve our encounter with a straight up fight to the death. Our armies were quite similar in composition though I could count on a large detachment of Heavy Cavalry. I deployed directly in front of the enemy line and ordered my Cavalry into an immediate charge on the enemy`s right flank.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofTotomi1.jpg
With no cavalry of his own to counter mine, Lord Imagawa ordered his entire army to charge across the field, after loosing a volley from my archers, I too ordered the charge.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofTotomi2.jpg
The resulting melee was vicious indeed, afterall, the Imagawa Samurai had resolved to die fighting, defending their homeland. In the end we had to kill every last one of them, Lord Imagawa himself being one of the last to fall. It was just a pity that their Lord could not of displayed the same kind of honour in life as his men showed going to their deaths.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/hogkrazy/UESUGI%20Way%20of%20the%20Sword%20and%20Bow/Uesugi-BattleofTotomi3.jpg
With on one left to oppose me, it was not even necassary to march to Kyoto. The Emperor sent a herald to congratulate me on my victories over my enemies and to invite me to take up the post of Shogun. I humbly accepted, the destiny of Japan would now be guided by my hand.

Wahey! Apologies for the slow progress with this compared to the Oda campaign but work has been consuming most of my time recently. Anyways, I found Uesugi to actually be quite tough in the early stages but in the end a little easy compared to Oda which was a real challenge from start to finish.
Anyways, I hope you have all enjoyed this as much as my last cmapaign. Thanks for reading.
Well done, Imagawa did you a favour in going with shimazu, look forward to the next one.
Entertaining and nicely written as usual! Congratulations to your victory! Me too is looking forward to the next one. :2thumbsup:

I`m glad you continue to be an avid fan of my work Patdj but I`m going to have to disappoint you if your waiting for another AAR. I`ve just joined a clan, The Round Table Knights, in preperation for playing the new Empire Total War when it comes out. Maybe in a few months time I`ll be able to ind some time to write another.

So many corpses... I will have to try a campaign with large unit sizes some time.
It was also nice to see a sensible battle in Owari instead of the usual silliness caused by the AI not liking multiple bridges.
Anyway, nice campaign. Well done.
What a shame, Wishazu. :embarassed: Hopefully we will see each other in the Sengoku Jidai IH some time and you find some nostalgic moments to drop by at the Sword Dojo? :whip:
I never stray far from the Dojo my friend.

I used to but it broke (Children :wall:) so i bought another one on ebay and when i got it it only worked on my labtop i played as the Green (I think Shimazu?) and purple(Hojo?) and unfortunatly my child was watching with a cup of water and kind of spilled all over my labtop so i only got a desktop. It seems like an very interesting game though, based on the internal strugglesbetween regional lords all vying for power in Japan, then the traders of Portugal, i think (if ive done my history) Spain, and England, but reading your little short journal intries has insprired to buy another labtop, i need to know something, but wasn't Oda Nobunaga the man who almost unified Japan but was killed by rebels then Hideyoshi succeded him and conquerd Japan?:study:

Wishazu you should consider writing stories, you have a very incredible gift to write, i stayed up till 1:00 reading you "Journal"
<-----------Smiley agrees with me
<------------Ignore Mr. Nonsmiley he's just mad his girlfriend dumped him for a drunkard
I`m glad you enjoyed my Uesugi journal so much Servius and thanks for the compliment. Have you read the Oda journal? I personally think it is the better of the two. :) Also I was honoured to receive an award during the last Totalwar.Org awards "Ceremony" for the Oda campaign write up.
I don`t actually consider myself much of a writer though I`ll admit I probably have a decent enough imagination for it, being a successful writer requires other skills which I am sadly lacking. Saying that though, my girlfriend is currently writing a novel and I am her unofficial editor and proof reader lol.
If you get a new laptop or computer and Shogun, be sure to return here with your own tales of conquest. :)

Hopefully isn't the Oda Nobunaga the one who historically conquerd Japan, untill Akeichi Mitsuhide betrayed him and killed him, then in turn was killed by Hashiba Hideyoshi, who then attacked Korea, but was defeated by the Turtle Ships?

I hope so, I'll have to ask a Japenese historian.~
By the way how do you take screenshots?
Depends on your key settings. Default would be F2, it saves a TGA pic file in the TGA folder of the game, and you'll probably have to convert it to JPEG. Other possibility is to press "Print Screen" on your keyboard, go to your picture editing prog, paste and save it. :juggle2:

He was one of the so called "three great unifiers" also including Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Hashiba) and Tokugawa Ieyasu (who estabilished the Tokugawa Shogunate).
