View Full Version : The ETW Anticipation Thread!

This is a thread for us to vent about how much we want to play ETW, see a demo, etc. I noticed this kind of thing was cropping up a lot in other threads, so it's best to give it an outlet.

This thread is also known as the 'Polemists wants a demo' thread. :laugh4:

Massive text incoming.

Kidding aside I'm very much looking forward to ETW now that I am certain i'll for sure be able to play it. I'd love to see a demo too, but making a demo takes extra time away from the devs. So CA, please. Make a demo if you can, but not at the expense of the game's end quality. Okay, firstly as if one thread can contain my DEMO desires ha :laugh4:

Come with me, on a magical journey.

The decade, the ninties, the games are plenty, CA still owns itself, and the world of gaming is taking off. There is a mystical magical creature known as , "The Pre Order". For a mere five dollars, (Which then could buy a gallon of gas) you can get a cd full of videos, screenshots, wall papers, and yes..a demo.

Demos were a magical thing, I remeber romes demo against carthage, seeing the elephants, laughing, playing with friends. Even the cheesy history channel rtw engine tie in series just to excite us.

Then came the dark times, when companies were forced to offer nothing with a pre order and rather demand higher rates for vaunted things known as "Collector's Edition" "Special Edition" games. The pre order 5$ was credited towards your purchase, but the extra 10-20 for Collector's and special editions were not.

Demos died, becoming fewer, as more and more companies took the mindset of "It's done when it's done."

No longer did developer want a fun easy way to let players have a small taste of the magical world before release. No longer did small demo givers have outlets.

Fileplanet ruled all, and the darkness began

Thus.....I want a demo, to have fun and return back to the good times :)

M2TW had a demo.

I for one sincerely hope ETW will have one too :2thumbsup:

Sir Beane

Your magical journey saddened and depressed me. Truly these are the dark times of the Third age. The mythical demo is long lost amongst a sea of marketing hype and DRM controversy.

Where now the demo and the beta? Where is the game we were playing?

Where is the file and the download and the happy tears flowing?

Where is the hand on the keyboard, and the monitor glowing?

Where is the battle and the campaign and the death count growing?

They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;

The days have gone down on the demo, behind the hype into shadow.

Who shall savour the smoke of the digital town burning?

Or behold the glory of the Total War series returning?

Please CA, have mercy on these poor souls.

Polemists
01-26-2009, 13:46
Seriously, two battles in a small file should not drastically delay a release date, common CA, if THQ the guys who did a Dirt Biker game can do a demo with no impact, so can you :laugh4:

Sir Beane

This thread has six views and five replies. That must be some sort of record for postcount to views.

I'm looking forward to Empire more than any game for a long, long time. The only other game I anticipted this much was Oblivion, and that stopped as soon as I found out Bethesda went and dumbed things down compared to Morrowind.

Do you think if we threw a load of money at CA headquarters it would make them work faster?

The fact that they still do, and even answer questions we ask, is evidence of how great the people at CA are. There are not many games developers where you can directly speak to those involved in making the game.

Thirded. Although if Empire is reasonably far along (and we had better hope it is given the release date) then how difficult would it be to whack together a custom naval battle, a custon land battle and put that up? Since I'm not a developer I don't know, but I would guess it isn't that difficult and we will see a demo soon. :2thumbsup::beam:

Not soon enough for Polemists however, who might just snap if he has to wait too long. And that won't be a pretty sight. :clown:

I'd very much approve of a naval battle in the demo, though. Hopefully the battles they do put in the demo (if they make it) won't have much scripted events, because then we'd get to see how well does the fancy new 'smart' AI behaves. Although, CA could just say that it ain't scripted and deviously script it instead...

If I remember correctly thate last two demos contained historical battles, which had some scripted events.

ETW however has no historical battles, hence the battles they give us will probably be made using the custom battle feature and should contain no scripted events of any sort. I hope. :2thumbsup:

I really want to see how naval combat works. Land combat has been seen before and can't have changed that much. Boats are fresh and exciting (and I'm a big fan of naval combat anyway). :laugh4:

I'm getting Special Forces, boxed. I want the fancy case and map that come with it. Steam is convenient, but you can't put a digital game up on your shelf with the rest of your TW collection. I like seeing the shiny boxes all lined up, even if I dont play many of them any more.

I believe I will be going for the Steam (non special forces) offer. Special units don't really interest me enough in order to spend more money, and if the game gets boring over the next 12 months I would assume that the price will come down for the special forces add-on (plus we should have a shiny expansion pack!).

You're so gracious. I hope it's today though. Certain people are holding me responsible for getting CA to produce something. They keep cracking their knuckles menacingly and making pointed comments about how breakable human bones are. I'm scared.

We know CA already must have a demo somewhere, because they keep rolling it out for the press to play. I imagine it can't be that difficult to polish up a press demo and then send it out to us.

That leaves us with Britain vs. America or Britian vs. Prussia I think.

Polemists
01-27-2009, 13:06
They do have something they show the press, though often companies now to try to get away with,

"Oh that, it's not a demo, that's a small chunk of the full game....and we can't diviy out that chunk even though we have all the files....because....copy and paste is challenging..."

I mean common CA, we all know you are going to be shipping a pre release of the full game at least 2 weeks before release to let the magazine reviewers review the full game before last few tweaks. All i'm asking for is a demo,

THE DEMO

Keep in mind CA, last time you held out on us for a demo it leaked out of your office, i'm just saying, the more anticpated we get, the looser your chances of being the ones to be the heroes who gave the fans the demo become.

Cause if everyone gets it through a leak like last time, it will be like when you released mtw2's demo officially a week and a half later and everyone just went, "Oh...yea....i've been playing that...."

Well i'm not sure how big the demo will be, but i doubt it will be small, espically if the game is 15 gigs. That's my whole point of releasing it soonish/now.

Yes if you have cable dsl it dosn't matter because you can download the demo in a day, but for those of us on slower speeds (i'm on 512, which dosn't even exsist in most civilized nations :P) it will take a good 3-4 days to download the thing, and then play it a bit.

I'm not sure if this is old news or not, but I just found a more or less official confirmation of the future release of a demo. On totalwar.com in the Pre Order section they talk about Steam and the fact that they will distribute the demo:

* Steamworks will support both the retail and electronic versions of Empire: Total War, giving you fast access to game updates and downloadable content, while also connecting to your existing STEAM friends list and messaging tools.
* You can also earn STEAM Achievements in-game, perfect for bragging rights on the rest of your friends list.
* STEAM will also host and distribute the Empire: Total War game demo which will be available on the run-up to release.
* Empire: Total War is also available to Pre Purchase as a digital download from STEAM.

Also, judging by the demo release and full game releases of RTW and M2TW (8/23/04, 9/22/04 & 10/10/06, 11/14/06, respectively), it would appear that the demo comes out pretty much a month before the full game. Given a March 3 release date for Empire, I would be willing to bet that we get a demo in about a week. Is anybody else as optimistic as I am?

Yet there's always been some minor frustrations with AI.

Allying only to betray me that same turn......attacking an army of better trained soldiers with peasants and somehow auto resolve states they win.......charging of general into my frontlines at start of battle....the little things

I am curious mostly to see it on diplomatic side rather then the battlefield, though hopefully the AI can do formations and garrison buildings properly.

I just want a ally to actually be a ALLY this time around. In past other then map information and trade rights diplomacy didn't seem to mean much beyond that.

I honestly don't care too much if the A.I is that great on the battlefield. I know that no matter how good it is it won't be able to match a human player. If I want a challenge on the battlemap I'll take the game online. I do hope the A.I is good enough to not lose really badly though.

The campaign map A.I is different though. Decent A.I is essential for drawing you into the game. If your opponent is behaving like a human it makes everything so much more real and convincing. I play the game for the atmosphere and feeling of being in whatever time period the game portrays. Things like having a reliable and dependable ally and trading partner would really help me care more about my empire.

Common CA, give me a screenshot, a video, a audio sound commentary at the demo page something. OR BEST YET,

THE DEMO

Seriously, the demo page with no information can only appease the demo fanatics for so long CA

:horn:

Oh god he's started again. He'sstartedagain! Please CA, release the demo soon! We can only do so much to contain him!

I cant get the Demo cuz of m internet anyway but i dont even want it. im afraid i'll play it to much and or the game itself wont seem so amazing when i get it. if its a naval batle 1ith 2-4 units (1 or 2 on each side) and a small land battle with about 4 units on each side, maaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe. But im afraid it'll spoil it for me.

so instead im just gonna keep doing this.

Lol, way to make excuses :P

I've heard this argument before, about newness or amazingness.

But unless you've been living in a cave and not watching the dev diaries, you've already seen the units in action. You've already seen the campaign map. So I hardly think 2 battles will spoil it.

It certainly didn't spoil it for me in MTW2 demo, if anything it made me hunger for the game, for having custom armies, leaders and battles in the context of a grand campaign. :2thumbsup:

As today is 2 Feb, a good bet might be you will see it tomorrow.

Only four weeks left until we won’t need a demo any more! (four very long weeks I might add)

Those weeks are long....painfully long..

it is clear that the demo fanatics have grown soft since the great push for demo of a week ago :whip:

It is time to once more push the demo fanatics to assault CA

We will ride forth against the hordes of naysayers :turtle:

We will assault them with our cries for demo :charge:

We shall breach every possible defense of patience and restraint that they hold :surrender:

We shall triumph, and there shall be

DEMO

Now you have it folks!

The English had Robin Hood tweaking Prince John’s nose

Spanish California had Zorro, who made the sign of the Z

Now we have the legend of Demo who makes the sign of the D

Surely a legend in his own mind…

So now we shout Save us CA! Give us a demo so Demo will go away!

That's the spirit, and not just here on ORG, no, I will go to steam forums, and gamespot forums, and ign forums.

Across the great land of cyberspace the cry of DEMO shall be heard.

No matter how they try

Victory shall be ours, and we shall laugh and have joy as we celebrate a united demo

At this point I'm amazed Polemists hasn't changed his screenname to demo and donned a superhero costume in order to harass CA further. :laugh4:

Maybe thats an idea? Quick! To the Demo mobile!

Ah the leotard, tasteful yet practical, and when worn by a man it can instantly become either intimidating or highly disturbing. A good choice!

Don't forget to wear a stovepipe hat on your head and fluffy rabbit slippers on your feet. And be sure to carry a spade. Remember, you want you outfit to scream 'unhinged, dangerous madman' to really get the point across.

If at all possible try and work up a good froth in your mouth before you speak to them. The threat of rabies might be just enough to get them to cave. :2thumbsup:

Really, if i'm going to do all that I might as well just ask for the game :P, I mean they have to release the game 2 weeks ahead of release date to reviewers anyway.

Maybe they'll just think I belong to PC gamer or something, espically if I froth at the mouth.

Though right now.......I just want

I'm absolutely dying to ETW!

I started playing M2TW again yesterday in anticipation of ETW. Want to run a deep campaign or two before Empire comes out...get back in the swing of things.

I'll be playing ETW online and off and I'll also be starting a Clan/Guild. If anyone is interested, PM me before Empire comes out.

I have waited for this game for quite a while now. The cliche is true- it is darkest just before dawn. With football now over and baseball not yet back, this is a sad and barren entertainment season for this guy.

However, perhaps there's hope. Maybe it's darkest just before DEMO!

Q/A's are good of course, just not as good as a demo...or even demo screenshots...or demo videos.

Common CA you did a whole Demo sidebar, toss us something here.

I didn't get a single Empire Total War Newsletter the entire time you've been in production. I know economy's hard so give your advertising department a reason for living Sega :P

Let's see more DEMO
