View Full Version : Idea:Arche and It's Satrapies

While playing as Baktria i got an idea. Why not use the system of the Senate (you know, from Vanilla, where you could get the favor of the Senate) for the Arche and it's Satrapies. It would help Pontos, Baktria and Hayasdan survive the great, grey flood because a faction cannot declare war without enough support. Which would be got from missions. This isn't a bad idea for rp also. It would be unhistorical for satraps to just sit around and kill alot of people. They need missions and tasks from their Basileus! And once war is declared to one faction a civil war would start! Why don't do this? :idea2:The only reason i know why not is if the "senate" faction get's buggy.

I'm afaraid that would need a great amount of modding and text editing to enable the missions, if that is still possible, that is. So I'm afraid I'll have to take the 3rd option:clown:

P.S.: Don't get me wrong, the idea is cool.
But maybe you know what happened if you enabled the SPQR for playing and you clicked on the cursus honorum roll or the senate registry card... so it would be very dangerous to play the Arche :D

Great idea, but unfortunately barely rializable

True...But is there a way to avoid this. Like disabling that button for AS.Or make it work?

Well, to be honest I'd be willing to help anyone who would fire up such a project. As hard as it may seem, it never hurts to try.

I can see the appeal, but AFAIK in order for proper senate missions to work you need to have a senate faction with all due consequences.
Also there is the eternal issue of: why just the <insert_faction_xxx /> and not the <insert_faction_yyy />?
Adding together all the scripting and coding required with the fact of pulling a faction out it would be a hard job and all praises if anyone could het it to work but personally I can't see it working. It would probably stagnate the factions and we all saw the dodgy missions of blockading faw-away ports and taking little towns in Iberia.
I say its a good idea, but you'd have to re-enable the senate (i.e, no Saba, or some random other faction)

Could it be a temporary mod? You could activate it when you want to play as a satrapy, and the senate would replace the Casse or something (Since they don't really do anything). Then when you're done, you could deactivate it?

The EB team has had this idea before and implemented missions like the recovery of Alexander's body in an earlier build (pre 0.8). It was dumped to have the Sabaens in the game, which I appreciate.

But you could still change the Sabaens back right? And vice versa? I mean, the satrapies would almost never encounter the Casse, so it wouldn't affect gameplay, other than the missions. How hard would it be to make it a "temporary" mod?

It is possible, though it would need a considerable amnount of work. First of all, you'd have to find all files that are related to senate missions (from the original RTW files), then tweak them in the right way. Then you'd need as much testing as possible.

If you want I can add more satrapies for A.S. ,
That is what I can do, but for missions, you have to kill Sabae...
It's doable in theory.
I actually thought of doing something like that in XGM (with AS as superfaction and Baktria, Pontus and Armenia as "satrapies") but it requires a mighty amount of recoding.
The senate floor CTD is not an issue as long as the faction's internal culture is not roman it won't even show up.
Main issues:
- it requires TONS of internal renaming for each interested faction
- you will have to fine-tune diplomacy or face AI weirdness
- working on EB's internal script might prove to be too much of a challenge for any single person.
- it needs some serious traits re-work to be realistic
- some hardcoded issues might be unfixable (like being awarded triarii)
On the other side, I did that on a smaller scale and it actually works pretty nicely after you tweak some thresholds properly.
If you're interested, here's what is being done as XGM submod: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=184343

Pretty interesting, Zarax. You know, I used to be an XGM player before settling in EB and I think I've heard about this whole AS-as-Senate thing.

Good to know, XGM is all about its cultists... ehm, members!

I don't think it will be a good idea. From the historical perspective both Hayasdan and Pontos were Seleucid rivals in Asia Minor and Caucasus, so limiting the ability of the Seleucid king to wage war against those is ahistorical, especially if the permission to declare war against those would depend on the AI.
From my experience with vanilla, missions were rather pointless and added little to the game. If it is possible to make the decision-making process for missions more "intelligent" it could be a good idea, but I don't think it is possible and it will come down to sending a diplomat there and blockading some remote port here. Mission decisions should be dynamical, where the development of the own faction as well as that of the other factions is taken into account, it will also require some sort of cooperation by the AI of neighboring factions to be useful and have logical consequences. I'm nearly sure RTW can not be modified that way.

I will try this myself in the lines of XGM and maybe even implement it into a mini-mod I'm preparing.

I might even consider helping you guys, since I got some free time lately (with my University remaining closed). There are other minor issue I wish to discuss with you as well, like the Loyalty system, and shadowing factions.

We're always available to discuss about features, just post in our TWC forum
