Will of the Thengoz
- An interactive Swébôz AAR -
By Jaertecken

And so it came to be in the year 268BC, that the tribes known to history as german, united under one banner. The ambitious Swêbóz chieftain Hêruwulfáz had by diplomacy and brute force merged all the germanic tribes into one, single power. Hêruwulfáz was now Druhtênoz Theudónóm Aláizôm - King of All Tribes! With all the tribes under his command and when the last snow has melted, Hêruwulfáz called from all corners of the germanic world chieftains, representatives and elders to a giant council, the Althengoz.

All tribes of the Swêbóz confederation attended the council. There were the wise Samânónz, the political elite of the Swêbóz confederation. There were the Markomannóz, largest sub-tribe of the Swêbóz and mighty warriors. There were also the Wenjoniloz and the Ermundeurjoz, who excelled in trade and farming. There were also the recently conquered tribes, not of Swêbóz origin. There were the Heruskôz and the Hábuskôz, former blood enemies now forced to co-operate under the Swêbóz.There were the Háttôz, raiders of the south who made frequent attacks into celtae lands. The Kimbriôz of the north were also there, as were the Rugôz of the east.

And finally there were the Swêbóz under their chieftain Hêruwulfáz, Druhtênoz Theudónóm Aláizôm and protector of all Germans. With the powerful blast of a brass horn, the first Althengoz had opened.

----

AAR-Conditions:

Version of EB: 1.1
Campaign Difficulty: VH
Battle Difficulty: M

Origin: For a short period of time, before it was lost to CTDs and real life issues, I was a member of Maion Maroneios' interactive Makedonian AAR "From Basileion to Arche". The idea of the interactive AAR, with fellow forum members controlling the direction of the campaign, really got to me and I soon began to plan my own interactive AAR.

Idea: The thengoz (or thing) was the governing assembly in Germanic societies, made up of the free people of the community and presided by lawspeakers. As the AAR title mentions, it is the will of the thengoz who controls the direction of this AAR, what land to conquer and where to go. Every session of the Althengoz will be open for a couple of days, then closed and I will execute the will of the thengoz.

All forum members who would like to influence the direction of my Swêbóz are welcomed to join as a tribe's representative at the Althengoz. The character can be of any age between 16-65 years old, and must be a member of one of the germanic tribes under Swêbóz control. Some extra tribes might be "unlocked" as the AAR goes on. The tribes available in 268BC are:

Samânónz - The aristocracy of the Swêbóz. Wealth and power is primary objective.
Markomannóz - The greatest warriors of the Swêbóz, who desires war above anything else.
Heruskôz - Former blood enemy of the hábuskôz. Ambitions lies in the west, to conquer the tribes of the Belgae.
Hábuskôz - Former blood enemy of the heruskôz. Same ambitions as the former, but even further, perhaps across the western sea?
Háttôz - Raiders of the south. A long hatred against the Sequani and other celtae tribes.
Rugôz - Expansionists of the eastern shores.

If a AAR member would want to have a different character, send me a short PM and your present character will die a heroic death in the next battle. As members of this AAR will only be allowed to have one character at the same time, a new character can only be introduced by the death of the former.

Tomorrow, I will open the first Althengoz. For now, all I can say that anyone who wants to join are free to do so by posting a short summary of their character in this thread.

Disclaimer:I do not know any proto-germanic, thus the primary language of this AAR will be English. English is not my first language either, so bare with me if I write like a drunken fool.

Members of the Thengoz:

Olaf Blackeyes a.k.a Richemer - Richemer "with the demon eyes" is a 25 year old member of the Markomannóz tribe. Although hardened and scarred by many battles, he was nearly crushed by the death of his wife. Now, only the promise of battle, women and strong drinks brings warmth to Richemer's heart.

SwissBarbar a.k.a Arnulf - Only 19 years old, Arnulf is one of the youngest members of the Thengoz but already with a high reputation amongst his fellow Heruskôzes. His father died fighting the Hábuskôz when Arnuld was just a boy, and since then Arnulf has been the head of his family.

King Vasiliyi a.k.a Volker - Volker "the one-armed" is a great veteran of war, reknowned for his fury in battle and loyalty to his general. True to his markomannóz spirit, Volker has seen many battles in his 49 year long life, rumors says he even saw an elephant.

HunGeneral a.k.a Hadubrand - A fine specimen of the Samânónz tribe, Hadubrand is a warrior in his prime. Having served many foreign lords and chieftains, he is widely experienced in battle well enough to be passed as an markomannóz.

Tolg a.k.a Segmer - A member of the Rugóz tribe, and wealthy beyond many other thengoz members' dreams. Thinly built and rather weak, Segmer has found other ways of making money than plunder and looting, quite unorthodox for a german, trade! During his many caravans in the east, he lost rather lost an eye to nomadic bandits, than his cargo.

everyone a.k.a Theudanaz - Theudanaz is of Heruskôz blood, 30 years old and a great patriarch of his tribe. Before the unification, he fought many battles against the Hábuskôz and although this has not been confirmed, bards speak of tales of Theudanaz fighting along side Arnulf's father when he fell.

the man with no name a.k.a Herumannoz The man of the family, 29 years old and a proven fighter.

Sign me up. PLZ FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SIGN ME UP!!!!!!!:beam::beam::beam::beam::beam::beam::beam::beam::beam::beam:

Ok seriousness. This is going to be good, and i can finally get some constructive criticisms for my Sweboz AAR which is the only one ive seen in a while, (But in truth it has moved on and become a fanfic so there are really none ATM)

BTW until u conquer all the tribes the only two tribal membership open are the Semenozez (proper Swebozez) and the Markomannez (Swebozez sub-tribe)

EDIT: oh wait u already Blitzed Germania, ok so now i can form my character.

Character name (English for you convince): Richemer (An aside; most Germans of this period have no last names)
Age: 25
Description: 6'3" with dirty blond hair pale skin, a deep scar down the left side of his face, all the way to the collar bone, from battle and (due to a birth defect) piercing red eyes.
Tribe:Markomannoz
History:Born to the times before the Great Battle Wolf (the IRL moniker for Heruwulfaz) he grew up as a battle hardened individual, even receiving a deep scar during a raid from some Habuskoz warriors. His eyes are the most defining thing about him. He scares many of the people he meets when he looks at them. Some say he is possessed by demons, others say that he IS a demon. A fierce warrior and firmly behind the Sweboz Federation and its new "king". He received some lands from his raids at about age 19, married at age 21. But, tragically, his wife died giving birth to their twin daughters, Aluruno; age 2 (obivous rip from my AAR here) and Frujilio; age 2. Due to his fiercesome demeanor he cannot find another love, and has since stopped caring about that.
Interests: His daughters, killing his enemies, drinking, MOAR drinking, even MOAR drinking, and swordfighting. Oh and did i forget to mention drinking?

But i also noticed that your are forgetting the two tribes in the far north, The Crimbrii (Xembrozez) of ancient Denmark, and the Gautzez (Goths) of southern Scandinavia and Gotland Isle. I hope u dont forget to conquer them.

I hope this is as good as Maion's and i hope to see him here as well, along with the rest of the Makedonian AAR crew.

Great, very interesting, I'll gladly participate.

Character: Arnulf
Age: 19
Description: 6.1 feet, long dark hair but light blue eyes, bold features and very muscular body. Though he's a fierce and brave warrior, he sometimes just has a waggish sense of humour.
Tribe: Heruskôz
History: Though he's quite young, he already is known among his fellow men to be a good fighter and brave warrior. Since his father died early, defending his lands against the filthy Hábuskôz, he now is the patriarch of his family. He protects his mother, his younger brother and his teenage sister. He himself is not married yet. Hates the Hábuskôz with heart and soul.
Interests: Fighting with sword and spear, providing for his family and of course women.

You haven't conquered ALL the tribes yet, as you will soon find out.

Actually, I have...You only have to unite the Heruskôz, Hábuskôz, Swêbóz, Háttôz, Kimbriôz and the Rugôz to get "Uniter of Tribes".

interesting, I think I'll also participate

(hold on; I'll edit this post later in around 2 hours because I have to do other stuff now but somehow found myself on the .org :wall:)

Character: Theudanaz
Age: 30
Description: An intimidating man of large build and bold features
as an extra, I shall add traits: sharp/uncharismatic/vigourous, unselfish/pessimistic/loyal
Tribe: Heruskôz
History: Theudanaz, a patriarch of his family, large and extended. He has seen battle at an early age, joining raids on the lands of other tribes before the time of the unification; but when the Sweboz arrived, the then patriarch of his family had decided to aid the Sweboz; now Theudanaz leads raids in the name of the Druhtênoz Theudónóm Aláizôm.
More on his family, his father had deceased and Theudanaz is married and has two sons.

Great idea, count me in as well (please ;) ):

Character: Segmer
Age: 39
Description: A little bit shorter then your average German and a comparetively weak build with a patch covering his left eye.
Tribe: Rugôz
History: Segmer is known for being one of the richest members of the Thengoz, he trades amber with the "civilized" people of the south and sees war only as a way to gain more and more riches. His reputation among the tribes is rather bad due to his "womanish" looks and attitude, his dishonesty and his avarice. Non the less he's also know to be a very clever and rational person.
He grew up among to lower classes of society but left his tribe when he was 15 and returned 3 years later as a made man. One of the many rumours surrounding his youth is that he poisoned another rich trader and his escort just before they reached their destination and took their amber to sell it as his own. Though this has never been proven.
Shortly after his return Segmer was attack by a nomadic tribe at the border to Taurike Chersonesos. The slightly drunk leader of the raiders left him with the choice to either keep his cargo - swords and expensive Greek armour - or his left eye. Segmer chose the cargo.
Ever since he has held a grudge against nomads and what he believes to be nomads.
Interests: Money. Money. "Greek" culture (Segmer doesn't differentiate between Greeks, Romans, Carthaginians etc.). Water as he doesn't drink beer.

Ok heres my character:

Name: Hadubrand.
Age: 32
Description: 6.2 feet, rather short brown hair and short beard, dark blue eyes, thin but strong in stature.
Tribe: Samânónz
History: Born as the only son of an influential member of the Samânónz he was sent south with some warriors by his father (who believed his sons passive nature would make him unworthy of his heritage) to see the world outside the forest of Germania and prove himself as a warrior. They spent 3 long years as mercenaries in the service of foreign tribes and kingdoms…. Only a dozen of the original band survived.
Hadurand and his “companions” returned 5 years earlier to the land of the Sweboz laden with riches and slaves – the spoils of war earned in battle with blood. After his Father died of old age he constantly supported Hêruwulfáz in uniting the tribes of Germania.
His experiences in foreign lands thought him a lot about warfare and the peoples of the south. Since then he prefers to outwit his enemies in battle then to overpower them. Hadubrand has also learnt to concentrate on his goal… achieving it with any means he deems necessary be it "generous presents", "hired killers" or open war...
He is very ambitious and strives for power and wealth (since both go hand in hand) but is very loyal to the King since he believes a united Germania can only be in interest of all Germanic tribes. He and his "companions" also hope to gain more income from trade between the tribes and neighboring lands and to lead their warriors (and those of other Tribes or peoples willing to join them) to conquer lands outside of Germania - for more power and more wealth.

Character name: Volker (the wolf)

Age:49 (dull/uncharasmatic/vigerous)

Discription: Fought in countless battles of the Mackromannoz. Lost his left arm a few years back when he was outnumbered. Luckily he survived his wound. Now his weapon of choice is a huge age that he swings wildly. He is a proud veteran and will be loyal to the death to any man who could bring him to battle. Although he never met his father or grandfather legend has it that they were nobile decendents of the kings personal bodyguard, even though he fights with the commoners. The reason for him being in the Thengoz is because of great valor. His bravery on the battlefeild was seen by his king and he was award land and status.

machinor
02-09-2009, 19:28
AFAIK SwissBarbar is right. The German name Volker/Volkher is derived from the old German(ic) word for "people" or "warband", thus meaning "warrior of the people", and is not related to the Russian word for "wolf". "Warrior of the people" is also a fitting name for a Germanic warrior, though. :beam:

~ Opening of the Thengoz ~

http://bayimg.com/image/pangeaabh.jpg

The blast of the brass horn still echoed in the distant as Hêruwulfáz stepped forward from the crowd. The althengoz was organized so that the members stood or sat on the grass in a semi-circle around a large stone on which Hêruwulfáz now stood. He took a deep breath and started to speak:

- I am Hêruwulfáz, Druhtênoz Theudónóm Aláizôm by the will of Tiwáz and Wótan, and I have summoned you here to attend this very first althengoz. Ours is a mighty confederation of many proud tribes. We are in many ways different, sometimes with old rivalries, yet we speak with the same tongue and worship the same Gods. Long have we been divided by our differences, squabbling over small crumbs of lands while our children dies and our common enemies, celtae and other tribes, grows stronger.

I say NO MORE! I have a vision for a greater future, a future where our tribes prosper and our enemies tremble before our armies! I ask all of you to join me, your king, in this quest...

- Who dare claim himself King of all germans when not all of our brothers are accounted for? It was Ulric, an elder of the Kimbriôz who interrupted Hêruwulfáz in his speech. Ulric stepped in front of the crowd:

- I'm Ulric, of the Kimbriôz. I must protest in earnest to Hêruwulfáz and his claiming of the title "King of all germans". There are still germanic tribes unrepresented at this great thengoz. North of Kimbriôz lands lives the Sueni, distant kin but still kin to my tribe. They speak our words, they worship our gods, how come they are not here?

- What about the silengôz? a man from the Rugôz tribe filled in. We the Rugôz travels often down the great rivers with amber to southern lands, making camp near the capital of the Silengôz and last time I heard, they did not recognize Swêbóz rule.

- It seems, continued Ulric, that great Hêruwulfáz has claimed his precious title before he really was king of all germans. How embarrassing for a king, to not rule those he claim lordship over.

- Enough of this, said Hêruwulfáz. The sueni of Skandzá is a isolated people, who Swêbóz rarely have contact with. Though, its my wish that they too can join our common cause. As for the Silengôz, it is true that they don't recognize my rule and our last offers of alliance was turned down and the messenger hung as sacrifice to Tiwáz. It seems that the silengôz cannot be persuaded by diplomacy and must be conquered by force.

*Hêruwulfáz noticed the excitement rise among the markománnoz*

- However, resources are few and we can only afford to muster one army. However, the conquest of either the Silengôz or Sueni will provide enough gold and men to conquer the next. Hêruwulfáz turned to the thengoz and spoke out:

- What is the will of the thengoz? Where will our armies go first, north towards the Sueni, or southeast towards the Silengôz?

Olaf Blackeyes
02-10-2009, 02:32
(Richemer steps forward to speak)

My High King the fact that ANYONE would dare to question your undeniable leadership of the German people is a traitor and should be killed. (He looks menacingly at the two fools that spoke up earlier) But that is beside the point. We must bring all of our brother into the fold, to prevent these types of traitorous behavior from occurring.
But where do we go first with our armies? Now this is a good question. I have listened to the members of my tribe. Many are in favor of bringing the Silengozez into the fold, for they are far stronger than the Gautzez and Sueni will ever be. After all, even though the Sueni and Gautzez control the great quarries of amber that bring the eastern tribes so much weath, the Silengozez remain a threat to those routes. If we allow them to stay outside of our glorious ((Confederation or Nation?)) they will continue to raid our lands and block our trade of this vital resource.
But honestly, i personally think we should attack BOTH!
(At this many of the Makromannoz assembly members begin to cheer wildly. Richemer allows this to go on for a few moments before silencing them again.)
This is partly due to the fact that many of my men want a good fight, and the Sueni have been ripped off for years by the traders of the Rugozez tribe. This makes them far weaker as compared to our brave and powerful warriors. They still fight with sharpened sticks and stones, while the Silengozez have heavy iron spears and swords, supplied by the dammed Boii smithies of Ebornum. They also block our amber trade rather than aid it. The Sueni can wait until later.
I have also seen the Boii swords in action during raids from before our mighty High King lead us to glory, and personally i want one of those damned swords, as do many of my men, (The Makromannoz begin to cheer again, but Richemer silences them immediatley.)
Also the territories of the Silengozez contain the largest amount of iron that can be mined within the territories of our brethren.
So i, and i believe most of my tribesmen wish to attack he Silengozez.

(Richemer steps back into the crowd)

(Segmer raises, indicates his ever present bodyguards to remain sitting and speaks while fixing his gaze on the king neglecting the presence of the other members of the Thengoz)

My King, you should now ask yourself what kind of land you which to rule over, over some snow-clad rocks in the northern sea or over the fertile fields and the fat cattle of the rich south?
Do you wish to become a mighty king feared even in the furthest corners of the world or a you content with being a local lord only slightly more powerful then his ancestors worthy hardly more then a passing mention in the songs of the bards?

(Segmer stops for a moment still looking only at the king.)

Mighty King, those seals in the north have nowhere to run away to, we can spear them and take their hide and their fat any time we want.
The Silengôz are an entirely different matter. I've been in their lands often enough to tell you: They can be nothing but a bother to you. They are a continuous danger on your eastern border and if we don't hurry they might even loose their independence to the Boii or one of the other tribes surrounding them, making them as much of a thread to your alliance as the the powerful tribes of Gaul to the west. Moreover they block they block the flow of your amber to the south and hence also the flow of weapons and livestock back north to your armies.

Never forget, you, my king, may choose between slavery or power for you and your people.

(Segmer steps back ans sits down.)

Arnulf rises slowly and demands silence

"My king", "My high king". Who are we, Romans? Greeks? Etruscans? Why don't you bootlick him right away? Show respect and call him by his name! Many men are kings. But his name is his own, it's a gift of the gods and his ancestors. Hêruwulfáz. Hêruwulfáz! Honour that!

Right. Who to attack? Well, unfortunately I cannot propose the Hábuskôz. He smiles. As you all know, the filthy Belgae defeated our tribes several times in the past. We could never invade their lands and get near harbors to the rich Island of Britain. He looks to Segmer, knowing that he has always an open mind for new sources of wealth. Now we are strong. Strong enough do crush them, strong enough to challange the whole lot of those pathetic Celtic tribes in the south. Lets take their land. Lets slaughter their people. Lets force the will of the thengoz upon them!!

Hadubrand steps forward completely silent then begins to speak.

(Takes a sharp look on the two who interrupted the High king earlier the turns to Hêruwulfáz) "High King. Will you simply allow such fools to question your position because the Sueni and Silengoz are too stupid and foolish to be willing to join our confederation peacefully?"

(waits a few seconds for silence and continues) "Of these two tribes the later are more in need of “convincing” if you ask me. They openly defy you and sacrifice your messengers who would bring them an offer of peaceful union. The have rejected this offer. So let us show them what happens to those who defy the High king….

(turns to the Richemer and the other Markomannoz) .. Markomannoz!! Are you ready to show the Silengoz what fate awaits those who refuse our will?!?! Are you ready to strike down upon them with all the might of the Germanic peoples?! Then let us do so!! let us teach them the horros of war so they learn the value of peace! "Yes, why attack the Silengoz? the lands to the west are where more riches are! we'll have lands to feed our people, the tribes, our armies who would soon be the dread of all tribes, German or Gallic!
The land of the Silengoz may have some riches, but if not to Gaul, why not the east? at least there is amber there to trade, and I'm sure that all who are here at this Althengoz would gladly support expansion, as long as it leads to riches."

HunGeneral
02-10-2009, 11:32
Hadubrand again steps forward and speaks:

"Yes of course the true reward for any warrior who fights bravely are the spoils of war. Both Arnulf and Theudanaz are right that the lands of the east and west could give us more riches than the Silengoz.
However we could take the east later but the kingdoms and other great tribes to the south are more than willing to conquer and subdue other peoples and tribes and if they subdue the Silengoz or the Silengoz submit to them freely then we would have to fight these aswell. About the Celts to the west - let them fight eachother now, when they are weak enough we can conquer them easely"

SwissBarbar
02-10-2009, 13:45
They fight each other for decades. They are weak now. We should not wait until one tribe gets the overhand, especially the Aedui or Arverni, who are getting more powerful every day. Now is the time when they are weakest. Now is the time to strike and get their lands. You keep the wealth, Hadubrand, I get the women! laughs loudly

"My King, we all say the Gauls are weak. So why are they weak? (He makes a short rhetorical break) Because they aren't united, because they fight against their own people, their own blood, let's not make the same failure!
The Sueni are of no significant importance and the lands to the east aren't worth the endeavors of conquering them. However it is necessary to show the Silengôz that it won't do them any good to defy your power.
Hence I propose: First, let's head south to the lands of our noncompliant brethren and then west to spill the blood and take the towns of the Gauls, before they can regain their former strength.

My High King i would have to agree with Segmer on this point. The disunity of the peoples beyond the mighty Rhine is a mistake that we should learn from it first and THEN exploit it. I agree that the celts have many nice things, whether they live in Gaul, Briton, or Ebornum. But with so many enemies around our great people we need to stand united and have our homeland secure, before we can even dream of attacking our foes across the Rhine.
(He then turns and stares at Arnulf)
AND AS FOR YOU BOY! You do your King a disservice for not honoring his accomplishments AND his title that he has earned accordingly, and if it were left up to me you would be skinned alive.

*Hêruwulfáz wait for the last discussions to lower, before he once more takes to the stand*

- I have remained seated and listened to your arguments, and I have come to the conclusion that the will of the thengoz is to march south, to force the Silengôz into our fold.

*cheers rises from the crowd. Hêruwulfáz raises both his hands to silence the men*

- However, he continues, I reckon the ambitions of march into the lands of the Belgae. Their lands are rich, prosperous and with many soldiers that could possibly join our ranks. But, they are too strong for us as this moment. I urge young Arnulf to be patient, our armies will march for belgae lands when we are strong enough.

- Now, the task at hand is the subjugation of the Silengôz. They have defiantly denied our generous offers of alliance, they have insulted me and thus they have all of us! I will send out orders to muster an army, capable of handling whatever host of men the Silengôz might throw at us. I wanted to bring this to everyone's attention, without them we might one day tell you to start a war with the grey death when it's the heitgh of its power, our treasury is empty, our armies are being wiped out by invading Casse, Lusotanna and Sauromatae/Saka/Hai and half of our (future) empire is trying to revolt back to the Arverni (who survived in Galatia). lol

Before leaving the thengoz Arnulf says.

Richmer, you didn't get that to me calling him by his names means honouring him more, than just call him king - a title every foreign dog gives himself. Names are holy. Names are worth more than every title on the world. For its his name that shall be remembered for all times, not his title!!

Turning to the Hêruwulfáz

As you wish, Hêruwulfáz. You know I respect you. I'll be patient.

You know, I am young, I will live long enough to see the Belgae drown in their own blood. I just thought the old daemon Richmer could die of age soon, espeacially when he's trying to skin me alive. I would not be pleased if be broke himself all his old frail bones before he has the pleasure of seeing the Belgae fall, and his daughters getting married....to me! He bursts out laughing.

With that the Heruskôz' leave the thengoz.

Hadubrand watches as the Heruskoz and Markomannoz delegates leave. After a few second he speaks to the other members of the Samânónz as they start to head for their quarters:

"Strange. Both speak of the dangers of disunity bettwen the tribes and yet they start to argue over the title Hêruwulfáz should wear and how he needs to be adressed. Hopefully this will remain a minor matter of debate. Hopefully hey will celebrate together after the battle should we win over the Silengoz"

Another member of the Samânónz suddenly truns to Hadubrand:
"What do you think Hadubrand, which is the right title?"

Hadubrands looks suprised and gives a harsh reply: "Does it really matter? Point is that Hêruwulfáz is the lord of all German tribes with all tribes supporting him. He could be called King of all Germans, High King, or simply King. I would prefer High King which I think more suits the true Leader of all Germanic tribes but I won't complain as long as Hêruwulfáz doesn't find the way he is adressed insulting or beneath his honor.
Even those Foolish peoples to the south who call themselfs by different names but belong to the same peoples have several Kings and all of them fight against eachother and none can count on the support of there own allies or subordinates. I remember back as a mercenary I fougth for one of those so called "Aliances" when several of there "cities" come together to defend there interrests - but they can't make any real decisions, all they can is argue... no wonder no one has been able to unite them.
But enough of these foreign matters. The High King and the Thengoz has decided what must be done. Prepare the men, gater your forces. We march to war under the banner of the Sweboz and the leadership of Hêruwulfáz."

The Samânónz head on and start making plans for the preparations to war.

~ Chapter I ~

(268BC - 264BC)

First Blood

As soon as the thengoz had dissolved, Hêruwulfáz sent words to all the tribes of the Swêbóz to ready their soldiers for war. At the heart of Swêbóz lands, the army gathered. Many of the soldiers gathered were Jugunthiz, young men eager to prove themselves in battle and to their king. Many were also the archers of the forest, sneaky hunters who often accompanied the Swêbóz druhtinaz in battle. As the battle against the silengoz promised large spoils of war, nobels flocked to the gathering. In all, the Swêbóz army counted over 10.000 men and was one of the largest armies yet to be seen in these lands.

http://bayimg.com/image/nanbpaabk.jpg

The gathering of troops had taken almost all year, and when the first snow started to fall, the army broke camp and marched southwards, for Silengi land. The winter did not last long, and the snow was no more when Hêruwulfáz finally reached Silengoz land.

http://bayimg.com/image/oanbeaabk.jpg

The Silengi had long been prepared for the Swêbóz invasion and had gathered all their soldiers for this battle for their freedom. Báltház was the name of the general of this great Silengi army, counting nearly 17.000 and outnumbering the host of the Swêbóz by one third. The Swêbóz had barely settled down before the Silengoz broke camp.

http://bayimg.com/image/oanblaabk.jpg

The nobles of the Swêbóz placed themselves in the front of the battle, as they were the ones who desired battle the most.Hêruwulfáz, who led the battle from the front had prior to the battle order the younger warriors to guard the flanks, to prevent any enemies charging their backs. As the Swêbóz battle line formed up, it soon became clear that the plan would not stick as the Silengoz threw themselves with furious rage and desperation against the swords and shields of the Swêbóz.

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/b69535a3e3.jpg

For the carrion birds above, the battle must have looked like a stone thrown into a hornets' nest. The battle line of the Swêbóz was quickly disrupted, the youths who had been so eager broke ranks early and charged the enemy, only to be showered by javelins and arrows.

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/bf3a6ca1dd.jpg

It was then, when the fighting was the thickest, that rumors started to spread of the fall of the silengi general Báltház. Had he been struck by an arrow? Had he been thrown off his horse and pierced by a Swêbóz spear? No one knew for sure, but the rumor spread like fire through the silengi and soon the strongest of their warriors wearied down, threw their spears and ran.

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/60a51f8991.jpg

Hêruwulfáz quickly ceased the initiative and led the pursuit of the fleeing silengi himself, although exhausted beyond imagination. As they pursued the silengi, cheers from behind was heard. The body of Báltház had been found and was paraded amongst the Swêbóz warriors who tore everything valuable from the corpse until it was bare naked. Hêruwulfáz smiled for himself, for by that moment he knew he had won.

https://i40.tinypic.com/2nrfsb4.jpg

The pursuit of the silengi finally ended at the longhouse of the now deceased Báltház. The surving silengi had taken up a desperate last stand against their attackers and fought like madmen, but to no use. Every single one of them was either cut down or caught, taken away as slaves or sacrifice to the gods of war. The battle has ended with great casualties. Half of the Swêbóz army had been killed or severely wounded, but the entire army of the Silengoz had been destroyed, almost 17.000 men lost in a single battle.

http://s5.tinypic.com/wqxc3l.jpg

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/b6891079e3.jpg

The Silengoz was forced into the Swêbóz confederation by brute force. Their villages were burned down, their men of fighting age were killed, their women raped and their cattle was stolen. It would take a long time before the Silengoz would ever try to prove themselves against the Swêbóz again. As a final sign of victory, Hêruwulfáz had the longhouse of Báltház burned down and every house and hut near with it. The smoke rose to the skies and could be seen miles away, even in the lands of the Boi.

It had taken Hêruwulfáz two years from his coronation as Druhtênoz Theudónóm Aláizôm to unite the german tribes, now he was truly the King of All Germans. Words had reached him that Ansurhárjáz, the leader of the Markománnoz tribe, had crossed the northern straits into Skándza with barely 5000 men and defeated the Sueni, an impressive achievement. The tribes of the north now bowed to Swêbóz rule. With his title of High King now secured and imposed on all tribes, Hêruwulfáz once again sent for the members of the thengoz.

~ Opening of the Thengoz ~
( 262 BC )

http://bayimg.com/image/hanpgaabk.jpg

On the slopes of the holy mountain, in the grove of Limios Alsos, the next thengoz was assembled. Barely a year ago, the grove had been filled with the hanged corpses of sacrificed silengi but now Hêruwulfáz had cleared the grove and restored order to the lands of the Silengoz. As the members and representatives of the thengoz gathered in the grove, Hêruwulfáz watched them with a satisfied smile of in his face, the thengoz had grown to a gathering of men since the day he became king ten years ago. Then it had just been handful men, now the thengoz comprised of several hundreds. Hêruwulfáz took the stand in the circle:

"- Members of the thengoz! I welcome you to the lands of the silengoz, conquered and incorporated in our glorious confederation. The silengoz have been punished for their insults, their leaders have been sacrificed to the gods and their shame is no more, the Silengoz are now to be counted amongst us and treated as equals. Words have also reached me that the Sueni of the north have been subdued by mighty Ansuhárjaz of the Markomannoz, and that the north now bow to our will."

*On the command of Hêruwulfáz, a large map painted on a cow's hide was brought in front of the thengoz*

"- This is our world, continued Hêruwulfáz. In the west lives the celtae, rich and currently divided by civil war. In the south, beyond the mountains, lives a tribe who calls themselves romani. In the east, few has dared to venture as the tribes there know no lords. Even further in the east, a sea of grass opens up where the horsemen of Scythia roams."

"- We stand at a gateway, noble members of the thengoz! We could go west and plunder the lands of the celtae for instant richness beyond imagination, or we could march east and secure rich soil and prosperous land that could feed the largest armies ever seen!

WEST or EAST?

My King, I wish to thank you for such a great campaign. This axe that i picked up is a GREAT prize. (Pulls out the well-balanced, steel axe, and swings it for a little while.) It will do very well when i next go into battle.
As for whom our next... Victims? Shall be? Well to the east are a large number of Slavos tribes that are united in harmony. To the south are the minor Celtae kingdoms of Ebornum, and Vinceoppoles. These will be easy to crush, and are not even worthy of mentioning. The Celtae to the west, now there's a challenge worth taking. They have more than enough weapons to fuel a war to prove our peoples rightful destiny. Also the Celtae should have more than enough golden things to please my daughters, as they were from the loot that i reaped from the Silengozez. So in my view the Celtae to the west should fall. And with the amount of discord amongst them it will be easy enough to do, it will still be a good fight.

Hêruwulfáz had remained silent for the entire thengoz, when he finally rose to the stand and spoke to the gathered men:

- I have listened to the thengoz, and the wish of many men are that we march west. The west it is then, the celtae shall feel our wrath! However, the land of the Sequani is allied to the tribe of the Arverni and heavily defended. An army for such an expedition would take years to muster and train. I suggest we go through the land of the Nervae. The tribes of the belgae have been weakened by the strife of the Auedi and Arverni, and should easily fall to our warriors.

- The army will march for Bagacos, the capital of the Nervae. From there, the bellovacae belgae will be next, and then our armies will fall over Galla like the killing snow of the vargavinter!

~ Chapter II ~

(262BC - 261BC)

Coughs and Corpses

https://i41.tinypic.com/987xjn.jpg

For whole of the next year Hêruwulfáz traveled all corners of his kingdom, summoning warriors, young and old, for the coming war in the west against the celtae. The thengoz had decided, against the inner feeling of himself, that the western land were more prosperous and ready to be conquered. Hêruwulfáz knew that an invasion of the celtae lands would have to gather many warriors to his armies, unless it would fail.

Hêruwulfáz' lieutenants had advised to start the invasion to the north, through the land of the nervae. The Nervae was of the belgae, a celtae tribe, and lived isolated from their southern kin. The civil war between the Aedui and Arverni had further isolated the belgae tribes, and greatly weakened the nervae tribe.

https://i44.tinypic.com/wl3mfo.jpg

When Hêruwulfáz finally had gathered a large army capable of invading the belgae lands, strange coughs became to haunt him. The coughing lingered for a week, then progressed into a fever that toppled even the most vigorous of the Swêbóz warriors, and Hêruwulfáz was forced to the furs of the bed for several days.

In his place, he sent his most trusted general, the leader of the Markomannoz, Ansuhárjáz to lead the army. His oldest son, Hárjáwulfáz, followed the army as second-in-command and to be the eyes and ears of the throne. Winter had come to the north, the Swêbóz army crossed the frozen rivers, into the lands of the belgae and laid siege to the city of Bagacos. From Bagacos, the nobles of the Nervae ruled their tribe and the capture of the city would surely subdue the entire tribe.

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/75ef8e2a4d.jpg

The winter lingered longer for every year, it seemed, and when spring finally came only a short summer followed, with a cold fall with renewed snowfalls earlier than usual. The siege of Bagacos lasted for almost a year, with no signs of submission, when Ansuhárjáz and Hárjáwulfáz finally decided that the city had to be taken by force. Rams were constructed, and the 14.000 strong army of the Swêbóz broke camp and marched for the city gates.

The nervae were outnumbered by one third, and numbered only 10.000 men. The belgae were never numerous, but their courage and fierceness counted as several men and led by the general Cogidubnos, the Nervae would prove a fair match for the Swêbóz.

https://i39.tinypic.com/mma1sg.jpg

There had been ill rumors about the "mighty walls of Bagacos", but they were soon found to be false, the mighty walls of Bagacos were barely more than a fence, probably better to keep out wolves than hungry germans. Ansuhárjáz had his archers fire arrows across the walls and had the defenders hide amongst the houses and trees until the hail of arrows stopped. Meanwhile, Hárjáwulfáz and his personal bodyguard pushed the ram for the gates, as war knows no birth rights and treats every man equal.

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/ec19f63cb3.jpg

On the other side of the walls, the Taramonnos - light cavalry of the belgae tribes, defied both the arrows of the Swêbóz and orders of their leaders and broke cover to harass the men pushing the ram. The arrows did not miss their targets...

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/bf979105a5.jpg

As the gates flung open, Ansuhárjáz personally led the nobles and their huscarls through the breach and formed a tight shield wall, determined to stand fast against anything the nervae would throw against them. Among the nervae counted several hundreds of horsemen of the fierce belgae tribe of the Remi, and they were the first to taste the blades of the Swêbóz.

https://i42.tinypic.com/2ewczlg.jpg

The Remi Mairepos pushed the Swêbóz line further and further backwards, but Ansuhárjáz managed to hold the line. Frustrated by the success of the attackers, Cogidubnos first sent his infantry, the famous Milnaht ("Great Men") and then led his chariot-riding bodyguard into the fray.

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/3bbbe3ea70.jpg

On his chariot, a large golden bird - the symbol of The Free Nervae, Cogidubnos rode into battle. The charge of Cogidubnos surprised even Ansuhárjáz and almost threw him off guard, and the Swêbòz were now almost pushed back through the gates when the brass horn blasted three times...

https://i44.tinypic.com/ifcx1d.jpg

This was the signal that Hárjáwulfáz had waited for. While Ansuhárjáz had charged through the broken gates and chased the nervae out of their hiding places, Hárjáwulfáz had gathered the Swêbóz youths outside the walls, waiting for the three blasts from Ansuhárjáz. The jugunthiz now threw volley after volley of javelins and spears over the walls, causing great despair and casualty amongst the nervae, who fell like flies.

http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/79299ba41f.jpg

It was in this cruel "rain" that Cogidubnos fell, pierced through the chest by a javelin just as when he was about to gather his men for a final blow against the invaders. As Cogidubnos chariot was toppled, and the golden bird of the Nervae fell to the ground (and mysteriously "lost" and only recovered decades later in the house of a certain Rugóz merchant), the Nervae lost their spirit to fight and began to retreat. Hárjáwulfáz led the youths through the gates and set chase after the running belgae. The nobles under Ansuhárjáz were tired, but the renewed energy of their young comrades enlightened their spirits and joined the chase, a cruel chase were no one was spared the spears and swords of the Swêbóz.

https://i42.tinypic.com/oumfsy.jpg

When the soothing dark of the night finally came, the streets of Bagacos were paved with the corpses of the nervae warriors. The victory was nothing less than heroic, as the Swêbóz casualties were 2000 killed and 3000 injured but the entire nervae force had been destroyed. Many of the Swêbóz warriors remembered the raping of the Silengoz with joy, but Ansuhárjáz was different from Hêruwulfáz and furthermore, had other plans for the belgae lands. He forbid any looting taking place, and installed himself as regional governor of Swêbóz Belgae.

Hárjáwulfáz reported everything back to his father, who had been recovering lately and was soon to call for a new gathering of the thengoz...

~ Chapter III ~

(259BC)

King of The Belgae

While the thengoz was about to gather, Ansuhárjáz rejected the summoning and sent Hárjáwulfáz in his place. Ansuhárjáz had other plans, set in motion when he first claimed leadership over the Nervae. In Bagacos, where he had set up court, he gathered several thousands belgae warriors around him. One might find it strange for the belgae to accept a new master so quickly, but the promise made by Ansuhárjáz made many hungry men gather around him. Not only would the nervae be part of the glorious Swêbóz Confederation, but they would also be the first amongst the belgae tribes.

https://i42.tinypic.com/34iokti.jpg

In the spring of 259BC, an army of 10.000 Nervae under the command of Ansuhárjáz marched for the land of the Bellovaci and their capital of Bratosporios. After the fall of Bagacos, the Bellovaci had offer the refuge for all free belgae and their city of Bratosporios was one of the largest cities in the north by this time. However, the conquest of Bagacos had left many belgae under Swêbóz control and there was only a puny army of 7.000 belgae led by a Caradog to stop the Swêbóz onslaught.

Just as many times before, Ansuhárjáz surrounded Bratosporios with relative ease. Over the last years he had became a master of sieges, although one could argue that the small villages of Germania and even the cities of the belgae was easy picking in comparison to the oppidums of the Aedui and Arverni. Rest assure, Ansuhárjáz would have to put his skills in siegework later on. Bratosporios on the other hand, was a standard job and just as before, Ansuhárjáz had the city isolated and ready to fall when the first snow fell.

https://i44.tinypic.com/2j1abll.jpg

The belgae warriors, strong in both mind and muscle, pushed the rams with ease all the way up to the gate, surprising even Ansuhárjáz. The belgae would be a fine addition to his forces, perhaps the spearhead, he thought to himself. The celtic slingers, called Iaosatae in their own tongue and reminded much of the Swêbóz youth, pelted the enemy with stones through the heavy snowfall while the ram touched the walls.

https://i43.tinypic.com/fnakgj.jpg

The gates flung open, and Ansuhárjáz ordered his bodyguard and the other nobles to rush the gate. The tactic was well developed, by personally leading his men into the settlement, Ansuhárjáz would create a near-impregnable shieldwall with his experienced men and draw the enemy into an engagement while the younger, less experienced men either scaled the walls or knocked another hole to charge the enemy in the back.

https://i40.tinypic.com/2evs2n8.jpg

Caradog was a war-hardened general, but according to other belgae often too rash in his decisions, and today this would cost him his life. Caradog, who did not see the trap that Ansuhárjáz had sprung for him, order his men for full frontal attack and try to break the Swêbóz shieldwall. As the bellovaci got more and more bogged down, trying to reach their enemy, screams in their common belgae language was heard in the back, but it was not of their own warriors. They had walked into a trap!

https://i43.tinypic.com/j8pdnr.jpg

Nervae spearmen had made another breach in the wall, and now poured like water through the breach, drowning every man of the bellovaci. Caradog and his entire army was caught between Ansuhárjáz and the Swêbóz nobles, and the spears of the Nervae. The Nervae had not forgot previous insults between them and the bellovaci and the casualties were great amongst both sides, as the bellovaci fought in panic. When he realised everything was lost, Caradog undressed his battle gear and threw himself on the sword and passed from this world without a sound.

https://i39.tinypic.com/2j44vpd.jpg

Ansuhárjáz was once more victorious, and the victory equal as glorious as the previous victory over the Nervae. The Swêbóz losses had been few, about 500 dead and 1.000 injured, while the bellovaci army was no more. Ansuhárjáz was now King of All Belgae, and the Belgae would in time answer only to the House of Ansuhárjáz, a constant thorn in Hêruwulfáz's side. But for now, Hêruwulfáz was satisfied with his general's success and the road into the west seemed open, but spies had been sent out to scout the lands of the Celtae and they had not return when Hêruwulfáz gathered the next Althengoz in the spring of 258BC...

~ Opening of the Thengoz ~
( 258BC )

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f7/Germanische-ratsversammlung_1-1250x715.jpg/300px-Germanische-ratsversammlung_1-1250x715.jpg

The thengoz had been delayed for several days now, and the representatives, whether they were priest, warriors or just tradesmen started to grow weary. Sure, the longhouses which in they were housed were not too bad, and both women and spirits were pleantiful, but something was ailing the members of the thengoz.

Rumors had it that Ansuhárjáz had rejected the summoning, and that Hárjáwulfáz had come in his place. Surely, the king's own son would have some authority over the generals, but then again, Ansuhárjáz was both older and far stronger in mind and body. And where was the king himself? Hêruwulfáz had been gone for several days, speaking with men from the west who did not speak the language of the Swêbóz tribes. When the thengoz was finally gathered, the relief was great but did not last long. The cold day had all the members of the thengoz gather in the largest longhouse and it was in the light of a great fire that Hêruwulfáz stepped forward and adressed the thengoz:

" - I declare this thengoz, third in line since my succession as Druhtênoz Theudónóm Aláizôm, open and I welcome you all to these lands. We are near the borders of Galla, and it is from here where I thought the main assault on the celtae lands would start. I have however an announcement to make, that the invasion of Galla would have to wait. Four days ago, I received both good and ill news. In the west, Ansuhárjáz have subdued all of the belgae and they now march in our armies..."

*Hêruwulfáz was interrupted by high cheers and shouts*

"- However, Hêruwulfáz continued, as the town know to the Belgae as Bagacos fell, my son Hárjáwulfáz lead a group of spies into the west and south to scout the lands of the Aedui and Sequani, allies of the Arverni. Hárjáwulfáz is with us today, and will adress the thengoz for the first time with the reports of his travels in the celtae lands."

*Hêruwulfáz steps down as his son, Hárjáwulfáz, prepares his first statement in the thengoz*

"- I am Hárjáwulfáz, some of you know me, others might not. I come from the west, to represent the general Ansuhárjáz and to give my report on my travels in Galla. My father has postponed the invasion of Galla, as an invasion would prove disastrous to our confederation. As me and my companions traveled the western lands, we quickly became aware that the civil war between the Aedui and Arverni has slowed down to a armed truce with the armies standing ready all the time. I witnessed one of the army camps of the Aedui and I counted easy over 25.000 men, and my companions reported of two more camps with just as many soldiers in them. As we traveled back east to deliver the news, we had to pass through the lands of the Sequani, allies of the Arverni, and got just past their entire army, counting way over 20.000 men. The short version, the west is closed."

*Hárjáwulfáz stepped down, as the thengoz got more and more confused. Hêruwulfáz took the stand once more*

"- It would takes us years before we can muster the armies to match the Sequani, and I would be grey and old before we could even think of attacking the Aedui. The west is closed, for now, but we cannot sit idle. The Rûgoz has long desired to take control of the amber trade route in the east, the háttôz has provided me with information that the city of Vindelicoppidos does not count to the Arverni alliance anymore, and words have reached me about our kin the Bástárnôz in the south-east is under great pressure from a mounted tribe known as scythians. The word is free for anyone who wishes to speak..."

(Richmer steps forward to speak)

My High King, our brothers, the Bastarnoz, are in desperate need of our support. However it is far to get to the Great Grass Ocean, on which they live on the edge of. It will take much time to get our warriors to their aid, even more so when we have to march through several kingdoms (( and the ****ing AI scripters)) to get there. This sounds like a lot of fun to me but it also sounds like suicide. I say we must CRUSH the kingdoms before us.
But where to go, this is the true question. I say we need to secure our backside before we take on the Kingdoms of the East. Vindelicoppidos needs to fall to our forces. We are lucky that they have withdrawn from their alliance with the Arverni bastards. This is our time to strike them. Maybe ill even get a few new slaves.

*A tall man, wrapped in wolves' hides and a terrible blade on his back takes the stand. The look in his eyes is grim as he speaks to the thengoz with a thundering voice*

"- I am Hádáhárjáz, son of Hôder and I come to you on the behalf of my people the bástárnôz, as a brother begging another brother for help. We worship the same gods, we speak the same tongue and although it has been ages since we lived together, there are still elders amongst us who remembers the frozen forests from where we all hail."

"- We the bástárnôz have always been a proud tribe, true to our germanic heritage and valued our own ways high. For several years we held the scythians of The Sea of Grass at bay, but finally they overrun our villages and fortresses. At first, the horse masters respected our gods and we kept our ways. But when the old king died, his son struck down hard on us, destroyed our temples and installed loyal scythians in our councils."

"- I come to this hallowed thengoz to request...no, to beg, for your assistance against the scythians. The bástárnôz is scattered and leaderless, as all our elders, including my father, was caught and murdered to secure the scythians' grip over us. Our eternal gratitude and alliance with the Swêbóz confederation will be yours, if you free us from the riders from the east!"

“Brothers, warriors, men off all Germanic tribes. No true people would be able to abandon there brothers. Peoples of the south might be able to do so but there not true men trust me I know….

I also vote we support our Bastarnoz brothers. Any Samânónz tribesmen should do so.
But I warn you from overconfident actions. The horsemen of the east are fierce warriors and in the ocean of grass there almost undefeatable. One can’t just walk into there lands… I have heard many tales of vast armies who went out to challenge these horsemen … and none returned.

If we are to march to war against these centaurs then we must be prepared …. we must gather all Skutjonez (Spelling? - archers) and warriors from the tribes and if possible we should also take foreign men who sell themselves out as mercenaries and use them as arrow –fodder. Rather should they die under the hails of arrows the eastern horsemen darken the sky with then our german warriors".

Hadubrand steps back among the Samânónz to see what reaction the Thengoz will give to his words.

Arnulf stepped forward. The young Heruskôz looked sharp at Hádáhárjáz, son of Hôder, and spoke:

I am Arnulf, son of Swidger, from the proud tribe of the Heruskôz. All of you know, that in my opinion it is our destiny to exterminate those filthy Celts in the west. Especially all Belgae-tribes. Therefore I don't like our eyes gazing east.

However, I cannot stand the thought, that a Germanic tribe is subjugated by any foreign ruler. How could that happen? Now we have to make a preventive strike, before other peoples start considering us to be as weak as the Bástárnôz. He growled to Hádáhárjáz and turned around, speaking to the others. I say let's slaughter those Scythians, take their wifes, enslave their children and eat their men's livers and hearts, just to be sure...

Arnulf almost smiled. He didn't intend to eat anyones liver, but that kind of dark humour was just a part of his nature, even when he meant things as serious as hell. Meanwhile the others knew that.

Theudanaz, appearing more grizzled from the campaign in Belgae, stood to speak.
"It seems our western front is closed; and probably secured. of the other three directions we may expand the kingdom, I support helping the Bastarnoz for they are still of Germanic blood; we must not let Germanic blood by shed by foul horse-beasts. Also if those horse-beasts are allowed to subjugate more Germanic tribes, we would see our homelands threatened directly; and those horse beasts are cunning in combat; firing at us from afar and running off and not shedding a drop of blood in the process. We must prevent that from happening; and I hear that they have exotic treasures from the far east to plunder. I shall also volunteer myself to go; the west would not see much combat for now."

*Hêruwulfáz listened to the speeches in the thengoz, and after having made up his mind, he took the stand and proclaimed his ambitions*

"- Theudanaz is right, said Hêruwulfáz. We can not sit idle here in our, protected by the black forests and hoping the scythians will never reach us, for they will if they´re not stopped. The bástárnôz is on the frontline, and where the fight must take place. I will personally lead the army eastwards and take the scythians head on. Our friends among the bástárnôz have spoken of the scythians as primary mounted archers, which suits us well. Many are the archers and youths that has arrived from the west, experienced veterans from the subjugation of the Remi and belgae Taramonnos."

"- However, my actions in the east will not be the only one. Hádáwulfáz, chieftain of the Rûgoz has asked for the thengoz's permisson to secure the northern shores where the amber trade routes starts. His request is that a number of 10.000 men is recruited for this northern campaign. However, Hárjáwulfáz could with 13.000 men march south and capture Vindelicoppidos. What says the thengoz?

~ Chapter IV ~

(258BC-255BC)

A golden opportunity

Words was sent out to all the tribes of the Swêbóz confederation, and many answered the call. Some because the promise of plunder and bounty, some because of the lust of war, but many because of a growing feeling of "togetherness" and sympathy for their bástárnôz brothers. It had almost been twenty years since Hêruwulfáz had claimed the title as Druhtênoz Theudónóm Aláizôm, and the fruits of his work was beginning to show, as his subjects started to identify themselves as Swêbóz and not their previous tribal belonging. Hêruwulfáz's hair had become grey, but his body was as strong as ever and his mind was dangerously sharp as he broke camp and marched east.

For the great adventure east, a 22.000 men strong army had been raised. Many of the younger generations joined the army, as well as veterans from the Belgae campaigns. When they passed through the lands of the Silengôz, many youths of the Silengii joined the army, born right before their tribe's incorporation in the Swêbóz kingdom and now followed Hêruwulfáz's standard.

East of Silengôzlándám laid Lugouw, home of the Lugii federation. The lugii tribes had, just like the Swêbóz, been united in recent years but were much more unstable. Their king Cocolitanos, although a a strong leader, was constantly at edge with his half-brother Rhesus, who commanded the Lugiian army. The plan had been to make a hasty march through Lugouw, and continue for Bástárnôzlándám but the scouts' reports soon indicated that something was wrong in the land of the Lugii

"Rhesus and the royal army is no where near Carrodonum, it's virtually unguarded", said the scouts. Carrodonum was the capital of the Lugiians, and Hêruwulfáz knew, because he had once long ago met both Cocolitanos and his half-brother Rhesus, that this was a golden opportunity for expanding his kingdom. When scouts in the south had sighted Rhesus in battle with the celtae in Coutinoe, Hêruwulfáz immediately redirected the army's path for Carrodonum. With Rhesus and the royal army miles away from Carrodonum, Hêruwulfáz could take the city completely by surprise and set the perfect ambush for Rhesus when he returned...if he returned! Hêruwulfáz called to a quick council of war, preparations was made and Carrodonum was besieged...

~ Chapter V ~

(255BC)

Blitz

The attack on Carrodonum was swift and ruthless. The 22.000 strong army of the Swêbóz had surrounded the entire city and there was no way for King Cocolitanos to send a distress call for his brother, and even if he did manage to sneak a messenger out no one could know if Rhesus would answer. Rhesus could just as easily ignore the call for help and with the royal army retake Carrodonum and crown himself king. Time was short Hêruwulfáz had already set his plan in motion.

https://i39.tinypic.com/m9lvf9.jpg

In the morning, Hêruwulfáz sounded the attack and the Swêbóz ran for the walls. Veteran archers of the Belgae campaign sent volley after volley over the walls, forming an curtain of nails which kept the Lugiians away from their defenses. This tactic had proved effective against the Nervae and Bellovacae and would surely do its work against the Lugii. With the lugiians taking cover, Hêruwulfáz ordered the men forward and the walls was soon breached.

https://i42.tinypic.com/2u9n68z.jpg

As the Swêbóz poured through the breaches, Cocolitanos led his lugiian warriors straight into the fray. Cocolitanos had just been a small boy when Hêruwulfáz had met him, and now when the two warriors stood almost face to face, he could see what a strong man Cocolitanos had grew up to be. Too bad he had to die, Hêruwulfáz thought to himself as he fought his way through several lugiians and with one swing with the sword sewered Cocolitanos' head from his body. War did not know any mercy.

https://i42.tinypic.com/30avx50.jpg

Slowly, the lugiians retreated for the center of Carrodonum, having decide to make a final staunch defense outside the Royal Halls. The final stand of the Lugii was heroic, but foolish as the Swêbóz spears and javelins soon found their targets and one day, Carrodonum had fallen to Hêruwulfáz. The casualties had been light, barely a thousand dead or injured, and so the city was spared unnecessary bloodshed and plundering. Hêruwulfáz was both satisfied with the low casualties and eager to continue east, so a loyal puppet was installed as king and the army was soon on the march again. This time, they would not stop until they reached Bástárnôzlándám.

(255BC-254BC)

Rhesus' Fall

Winter had come to Lugouw, and although the Swêbóz were used to cold, many of the captains had grown comfortable in Carrodonum and there was still no sign of Rhesus and the royal Lugiian army, so Hêruwulfáz ordered the army to stay in Carrodonum. The winter months came and went, still with no sign of Rhesus. Then, just as the spring was turning into summer, a ragged band of broken soldiers showed up in Carrodonum. The men were surprised and shocked to find their capital in the hands of their neighbors, but they were mostly relieved, having survived the long march from Coutinoe. The men, who numbered perhaps only five hundred and many scarred for life, were easily gathered by the Swêbóz and their captain brought in front of Hêruwulfáz. The captain's dialect suggested a non-lugiian origian, possibly that of the Silengôz, and he spoke with a calm voice of his endeavors in the south:

"Rhesus and the Royal Army marched into Coutinoe a year ago, numbering over 30.000 men, accompanied by a large baggage train and many wives and children. I was captain over the Gaizoz Alje, the "foreign spears" and the mainstay of our army. Rhesus had once again argued with King Cocolitanos, and there were rumors that he sought to conquer Coutinoe to create his own kingdom where he would not have to deal with his brother.

https://i43.tinypic.com/24oxc37.jpg

"However, the bastards of Coutinoe thought otherwise and would not submit to Rhesus' will and thus they mustered their army to meet us. From their capital of Lucarottea came an army that was as great as ours, if not greater. Rhesus however, seeking glory on the battlefield, saw this as a great opportunity to in one blow eradicate the entire enemy army. On a grassy plain, the battlelines were made and by the gods, they stretched over the entire horizon."

https://i44.tinypic.com/1zvv3w0.jpg

"The clash of the lines were furious, with many instant deaths on both sides. The Gaizoz Alje did their part, and we held the line for hours as the lugiians and celtae wrestled over the control of the flanks. In our army marched several thousands of Boii celtae, and it was them who broke the lines first. Some of the celtae of Coutinoe fought naked, causing great unease amongst the Boii celtae, and soon the right flank fell. Rhesus, who had stood by with his entire cavalry, now charged into the collapsing right flank in a desperate attempt to save it. I had just skewered a celtae like a rabbit as I turned to the right, just to see Rhesus being pulled down from his horse and stabbed many times through the chest. The fall of Rhesus sent a shock wave through the entire army, and many of the lesser men began to run."

https://i42.tinypic.com/33uu2l2.jpg

"I still had control over the Gaizoz Alje, and we fought like madmen against the celtae, who all knew that victory was within their grasps. One after one, our men either fell or ran. The difference was none, as the enemy cavalry hunted them down and sent them to the afterlife." The hopelessness of our situation soon became clear, but I ordered the Gaizoz Alje to make a final stand, either to find a path off the battlefield or die fighting. I had gathered the men for a final push, when I was knocked unconscious and for a long time, my mind was blank.

https://i42.tinypic.com/2eupymb.jpg

"I awoke several hours later in a daze, surrounded by the corpses of my fallen comrades. For some reason, the gods had spared me and I had been chosen to live one more day. I did not know this before long afterwards, but apparently the celtae had found the baggage train and were more satisfied of robbing the train and raping the women and children, than plundering dead men. I was not the only one who had survived the battle, but I was one of the few that could stand up up. I made it off the field and into the woods where I joined this band of survivors. Being the only captain of the group, I took command and marched the group homeward. Many died from their wounds the first days, and the heavy snow took it's toll as well. Of the 30.000 men strong army that had left Lugouw, only five hundred had followed me home."

Hêruwulfáz listened to the captain, and he believed him, Rhesus was dead and Carrodonum was safe. Scouts returning the following week confirmed the captain's story, Rhesus's body had been seen paraded in Lucarottea and the road to Bástárnôzlándám was open! The survivors of the Lugiian army had been treated with great respect and their loyalty was now with the Swêbóz. After all and although not truly kin, the cultural differences between the Swêbóz and the Lugiians had never been that great and the two people would in time inseparable.

Hêruwulfáz had waited too long now, and the army finally broke camp for Bástárnôzlándám. Trumpets sounded, men shouted and sang and the earth shook as the great Swêbóz army marched to free their kin from the scythians!

Arrows Fly
https://i42.tinypic.com/9kuz9y.jpg

And so, Hêruwulfáz and the Swêbóz army finally stood in the doorway into Bástárnôzlándám. The army, who numbered nearly 18.000 after leaving a strong garrison in Carrodonum, had marched through the various mountain passes of Coutinoe and stood silent and gazed over the land in the horizon. Here and there, villages and farmland could be seen, and the land was truly paradise, had it not been for the scythians. As they passed the villages, the cruelty of the scythians could be seen - burned out houses, slaughtered cattle, emaciated villagers and arrows! The arrows were everywhere, and gave the Swêbóz a hint of what's to come. Hádáhárjáz the Bástárnôz, who had joined the army, wept before the sight of what had become of his homeland and his hate of the scythians grew even greater. The hate steadily grew within the entire army, and soon, the men was more part of an bloodthirsty mob than an organized army. As the headquarter of the scythians were sighted, Hêruwulfáz gathered his men and held a speech of hate and fury to his men:

"We stand in the land of our kin, the bástárnôz. Their wives have been raped, their cattle and lifestock has been taken, their idols has been cast aside! The bástárnôz are kin to us, separated only by the dark forests but not in mind - we speak the same tongue and we worship the same gods! The scythians has robbed our kin of their freedom and insulted them, and so they have insulted all germans! Before life, nothing but darkness existed. I say we send these foul beasts back into the darkness from whence they belong! TO WAR!

https://i44.tinypic.com/1z1a4y8.jpg

The air was filled the cheers and screams of the Swêbóz army, and the noise of the swords, spears, axes and shields banged together by the 18.000 men echoed in the evening as day turned into night. The scythians had been alerted early by the arrival of the Swêbóz host, and although Hêruwulfáz had no intentions of catching the scythians by surprise, the scythian governor Phidas was terrified to find the Swêbóz so close. Requests for reinforcement has been sent east, but the road to the Scythian capital of Olbia was long and Phidas would have to fight this battle on his own. Phidas had many archers in his 12.000 strong army, and he was confident that the Swêbóz would loose heart in the hail of arrows, just as the bástárnôz had done.

https://i44.tinypic.com/15d2bed.jpg

Hêruwulfáz knew the scythian arrows would claim their victims, so to minimize the casualties he had the army charge the camp as soon as the sun had climbed down the sky. Hêruwulfáz led the charge himself, throwing the light foot archers of the scythians at the sides for the youths to slaughter. Suddenly, the armoured mounted guard of Phidas towered up in front of him. These horsemen were armored from tip to toe, armed with long, vicious spears and mounted on huge steeds. The youths, eager and unexperienced, soon followed into the fray only to fall under the hooves of the scythians. The fighting soon turned desperate on both sides, Hêruwulfáz knew he had already lost many men and Phidas, who saw his bodyguard fall one by one, order his men to fire their arrows into the fight, killing Swêbóz and scythian alike.

https://i41.tinypic.com/2nimulj.jpg

Phidas pushed harder into the Swêbòz lines as soldiers on both sides started to fall in great numbers, whereas arrows merely bounced of himself and his bodyguard. This push would however separate Phidas from his men, which Hêruwulfáz of course noticed. The Swêbóz swarmed around Phidas and his men, and their mighty steeds where soon felled to the ground and the scythians continued the fight on foot. The heavy armor soon wore them down, and the light Swêbóz Jugunthiz climbed over the scythians, wrestling their swords out of their hands and cutting them down. Hádáhárjáz the Bástárnôz had been struck by two arrows and was fading into darkness when he found himself right behind Phidas, still mounted on his horse. With one last sweep with his terrible blade, Hádáhárjáz chopped the horse hind legs right off, throwing Phidas backwards onto the ground, where he fell and broke his neck in the fall. Hádáhárjáz then fell back on the ground himself, and he would not know anything more.

https://i42.tinypic.com/1zzjevp.jpg

The fighting lasted all night, and when morning came, the camp had finally been secured. Hêruwulfáz had taken seat in the house of Phidas, contemplating his action the previous night. He was exhausted and had a healer taking care of a wound on his shoulder, caused by a stray arrow that had missed him but ripped up a gash on his left shoulder. But at least he was alive, for there were many of the Swêbóz that had not survived the night. Barely 4.000 of the 18.000 strong army had survived the night unharmed, the rest either wounded or dead.

Many of Hêruwulfáz's bodyguard had fallen, but there were many surviving warriors amongst the Youths that had proven their worth and be let into the bodyguards' unit. Perhaps the greatest casualty among the 7.000 dead Swêbóz were Hádáhárjáz the Bástárnôz. Hêruwulfáz had intended Hádáhárjáz to rule the Bástárnôz as chieftain, for he would have been loyal to the Swêbóz Confederation. Now, the Bástárnôz would be directly under Swêbóz rule, a bold decision that only time would later prove correct but for the moment it was unsure if all the bástárnôz would accept Hêruwulfáz as king.

Most of the scythians had been slaughtered, but almost 2.000 had escaped on horses eastwards to deliver the ill news to their king in Olbia. Hêruwulfáz had none of his soldier chase after, as he not had the men to spare. In the course of a few months, 5.000 of the wounded from the storming of the scythian camp would recover, leaving another 2.000 crippled for life. The final toll on the Swêbóz had been 7.000 dead and 2.000 crippled beyond possibility to fight again. The dead were gathered on a large pyre, brothers in arms lying side by side and by the flames sent to the sky were the gods live. Bástárnôzlándám had been freed from the scythians and incorporated into the Swêbóz Confederation.

[Note from the author: The battle against the sarmatians were a close one, and I nearly lost it a couple of times due to the ridiculous thick armor of the FM bodyguard. I chose to role-play the high casualties as 50% dead and 50% injured, as I retrained the units with high casualties.

~ Chapter VIII ~

(258BC-253BC)

Glazowegoz
https://i43.tinypic.com/svtmcl.jpg

At the thengoz of 258BC, Hádáwulfáz of the Rûgoz had been assigned the task of securing the land along the southern shores of the Baltic Sea, then known as Sarmaticus Oceanus. These land were quite prosperous because of the Glazowegoz - Amber Trade Route, which started here and brought wealth in abundance to those who controlled it. The Coalition of the Vendi and Sembu Tribes controlled this area and from the city of Ascaucalis they controlled the amber trade. The Rûgoz had several times pointed out to Hêruwulfáz of the richness in the east, and finally they would act.

https://i39.tinypic.com/pu6bn.jpg

Hádáwulfáz would have some initial difficulties gathering his army, since most of the men had already gone east for Bástárnôzlándám, but eventually he gathered an army of 13.000 warriors for the tribes of the Swêbóz were both populous and eager for war. Hadubrand, representative of the Samânónz tribe at the thengoz, would act as second in command in battle and was given command over the Dugunthiz. The Hábuskôz also sent a company of warriors, fierce and somewhat difficult to control. At the same time as Hêruwulfáz left Carrodonum, Hádáwulfáz crossed the border into Vendi territory.

The Coalition of Vendi and Sembu had gathered an army of 14.000 warriors and was led by the general Hêrmáláusáz. Hêrmáláusáz were of mixed vendi-rugôz descent and had fought many battles in his time, but Hádáwulfáz was the younger and more aggressive of the two generals.

https://i39.tinypic.com/19ldsn.jpg

Hádáwulfáz had his army create a thick wall of spears just outside the outskirts of Ascaucalis. Along with the Hábuskôz, Hádáwulfáz bodyguard formed the main battle line with the Dugunthiz under Hadubrand's command forming the second line that would refill any gaps created by the enemy in the first line. The youths were placed on the flanks, both protecting the archers in the back, but also ready to swing around and crash into the enemies backs.

https://i44.tinypic.com/2ldzrzd.jpg

The light cavalry of the Sembu were quick the charge the Swêbóz. The Vendi general either held little sympathy for the Sembu or had underestimated his enemy, but the light cavalry were easily taken care off. The cavalry tried to escape the spears of the front line, only to be caught by the youths who had broken ranks to meet the enemy. Although Hádáwulfáz had wished a more organized battle, the outcome were to his satisfaction as the light cavalry were either killed or driven away.

https://i42.tinypic.com/xc6cky.jpg

Then came the attack on Ascaucalis itself, and Hádáwulfáz took his bodyguard and Hadubrand with the Dugunthiz into the city to battle the Vendi general himself. Among the houses, 7.000 of the Swêbóz faced an equal number Vendi and Sembu soldiers. Hêrmáláusáz fought on foot with his Karotovas, skilled warriors who would make a deep impression on Hádáwulfáz himself. Hadubrand took the Dugunthiz close to the general and were several times only a spear's reach away from ending his life, but with little luck as the general's bodyguards fought on vigorously.

https://i41.tinypic.com/oa3htu.jpg

Meanwhile Hádáwulfáz and Hadubrand had fought the general, the Hábuskôz had taken a different path into the city and ambushed several Sembu warriors, poorly equipped men who had little military training and fell easily to the Hábuskôz warriors. Constantly aware of the pressed situation of Hádáwulfáz, the Hábuskôz made a hasty march through Ascaucalis and some came behind the Vendi general. Screaming and shouting, the Hábuskôz crashed into the Vendi backs and caused great misery amongst the enemy. It was now that Hadubrand had his chance, and with the Vendi general caught off guard, he took a twohanded grip of his spear and ran the spear with such force that he broke the general's shield, pierced the general and the man behind him.

https://i41.tinypic.com/65vqyc.jpg

The Sembu quickly surrendered, death on the battlefield was not desirable for men who spent their days as tradesmen and merchants. The vendi fought on, at least for a while but finally broke ranks and ran. The 14.000 strong army of the combined forces of Vendi and Sembu had been defeated. It would still take some time to assert Swêbóz dominance over the region, and it was only the same time as Hêruwulfáz had began his journey west again to gather the thengoz, that the last stronghold of the Vendi-sembu coalition fell.

~

[Note from the author: This period of my AAR actually consists of two sieges, the siege of Ascaucalis and the siege of Gintaras-Ostan. However, the latter siege was somewhat less than epic with few screenshots, so I chose to roleplay the sieges this way instead.

~ Opening of the Thengoz ~
( 252BC )

It took Hêruwulfáz a whole year to gather an effective administration in Bástárnózlándám, to rule in his place as he would travel west to gather the thengoz. Around his halls in central Swêbózlándám, a large city had grown and was now the capital of the entire germanic world - Swêbótráustástámnôz! In fact, Swêbótráustástámnôz was the capital of the entire northern world and diplomats for foreign lands flocked to the city to show their respect for High King Hêruwulfáz. After securing the control over the Bástárnôz, Hêruwulfáz gathered a large company of the Bástárnôz nobility and traveled westwards. It had been eight years since the last thengoz and it was time for a new direction to march the armies.

At Swêbótráustástámnôz, the thengoz were gathered and although many answered the call to gathering, notable members of the thengoz were missing. Ansuhárjáz were not there, which greatly angered Hêruwulfáz for he had plans to discuss with him. Neither were Hárjáwulfáz present, for he had gathered an large army of Háttôz warriors and marched for Vindelicoppidos. Although he had not seen his oldest son and heir in several years, Hárjáwulfáz's actions did not anger him as Vindelicoppidos was an important city, a gateway to the lands of the celtae. Hádáwulfáz and Hadubrand had however returned from their conquest in the northeast. Wearied down by the gold of the Vendi and Sembu, they were greeted as heroes at the thengoz and given large gifts of both women, gold and wine.

Hêruwulfáz took the stand and spoke to the thengoz with a satisfied voice:

" - Members of the thengoz, I greet you welcome to this thengoz, number four since my coronation as Druhtênoz Theudónóm Aláizôm. This thengoz is special, because finally all of our brothers and even distant cousins are represented here. The bástárnôz and the lugiians, the Vendi and Sembu, all are gathered here and as much part of this confederation as anyone of you."

The samânónz and markomannóz muttered in silence, for they were not satisfied to rule alongside foreign tribes. The bástárnôz were one thing, they spoke the same language and worshipped the same gods, but the lugiians? They had an large stain of celtae influence over them, and what about the Vendi and Sembu? They're almost savages! The words were not kind, as Hêruwulfáz continued to speak.

"Once again, I stand before this thengoz, so we can gather our collective wisdom and experiences and wisely guide our great confederation onwards. We have established our kingdom in all directions of the wind, to the west, north and the east, and as we speak right now, Hárjáwulfáz is marching south in charge of a large háttôz host to conquer Vindelicoppidos."

"Our conquests in the east, the incorporation of the Bástárnôz, have opened up an entire new horizon. South of the Bástárnôz dwells the tribes of the Getai and thraikians, and further south the fabled white cities of Hellas lies. Through the land of the Getai, the amber trade route goes and it is possible, that in a few years, that we would control the entire glazowegoz."

"In the northeast, Hádáwulfáz and Hadubrand have told me there's nothing more to conquer. Hadubrand himself led the men who conquered the Sembu's last stronghold of Gintaras-Ostan and beyond there, only woods and scattered villages of little or no value lies. The land northeast of Gintaras-Ostan is neither rich, nor famed for their warriors and of little value to us."

"In the west, the war of Arverni and Aedui has finally come to a conclusion. The Aedui has defeated the Arverni at several occasions, even expelling them from their capital and chased them into the land of the Sequani. The war has taken a heavy toll on the Aedui and now might be the time to invade Galla. As soon as Vindelicoppidos falls, we will have an excellent starting point and can set our invasion in motion."

"What says the thengoz"?

As the different tribes represented at the thengoz, a thinly built man stepped forward. He was Rékiwulfáz, firstborn of Ansuhárjáz, and sent to the thengoz on the behalf of his father. He spoke with a voice, who gave his thin and seemly fragile body great strength:

"I am Rékiwulfáz, son of Ansuhárjáz. I speak for my father, for he is busy with the business of his domains, that of the Belgae. He had, however, important news that he would like to share with the thengoz."

"A few months ago, we were attacked. From the sea came painted men, who spoke with tongues that were strange, yet familiar. The men were painted with a blue colour and had large torques of gold around their necks. They raided several villages of the Belgae before we could send out an host to throw these men into the sea. The belgae spoke of these men as members of a tribe that once had left Belgae for the islands in the west, and they called the tribe Casse."

"Ansuhárjáz pondered long on what to do against these strange men, but then he heard about the shipbuilders in Armoriae. In the west, there lives a tribe of the celtae who send large ships oversea to trade with the casse. With these ships, my father could both establish diplomatic relations with the Casse, or if diplomacy fails, invade their silands."

"He was greatly dissapointed however, because when he sent his army the shipyards had been destroyed and in Darioritum, the largest city of all Armoriae, the shipbuilders had fled into Aedui lands. The new lands however gave us a great position from where to launch our invasion of Galla. We can now both pour south from our belgae settlements and attack west from Vindelicoppidos, when the city falls.

My High King, we must NEVER forget what these foolish celts have tried to do to us. After years of fighting slaughter and butchery, we now finally have the upper hand in this fight. I say we press this advantage to its very LIMIT and see how far we can get.

(Herumannoz steps forward) "I would agree with Richemer exept the recent attacks by this new tribe called Casse, might continue their raids on us and if we attack the main body of the celtae, the Casse might launch a full scale invasion on us and the main body of our forces will be far away so we might get a number of our cities captured before we stop them. But it might be worth taking the gamble to avenge our people who have lost limbs to them or even eye's. I also believe that, according to rumors, there is an island east of Gawjam~Skandzawarjoz with more of our Germanic brothers on it with it's main city called Gawjam~Gotanoz, that we can make join our confederation, adding to our list of tribes we control, more importantly our list of GERMANIC tribes we control, no offense to the celts in this Thengoz. That is all."

Hêruwulfáz stepped up to speak and to adress the issue of the gotanôz:

"The gotanôz decided long ago to isolate them on their island, long before my father was born, and his father before him. Although it's my intention to bring all the germans into the flock, we lack the ships able to travel over the seas. If the celtic shipbuilders that Ansuhárjáz scared away returns, we will be able to build ships to travel over the seas, both to the casse and the gotanôz."

Hadubrand steps forward and speak:

My High King I also say we should attack the Celts and make them our subjects .. the only thing there worthy for since they have become weak and foolish fighting each other. Now there inner wars are over but they had to pay a deer price for it and it is time we make them pay the ultimate price aswell!!! The lands to the north of us are not worth conquering.

Hadubrand turns towards Rickemer:

Rickemer I can understand your thirst for battle but I can’t agree with your idea of overstretching us – no peoples can be so foolish as to enslave 10 times as many as they themselves are.

He starts looking among the representatives in the Thingoz.

I know stories of a tribe from the south not far from the great southern sea … in a land called Lakedaimonia…. they were the greatest the world till there days but they could not rule over there own lands because they had kept several tribes suppressed as slaves. After the warriors of that tribe started fighting against one another these slaves rebelled and after a long and bloody war defeated there former masters and killed them to the last.

We can not make the same mistake by taking more then we can handle … we can and we shall overrun the Celts but only there strongest tribe after that the others will do anything we demand from them. Later when we have secured our rule over the Aedui then we can easily subdue the other Celts in the west.

I also must say that I see that there are more tribesmen from not Germanic tribes then before but if they prove themselves worthy and trustable then they are welcome.. Still the leading of this Confederation is the role of the Germanic peoples.

Hadubrand sits down to see how the other tribesmen react to his words.

*Rékiwulfáz steps up and turns towards Hadubrand*

- It is not in the place of the thengoz to question the Druhtênoz's motives of expanding the thengoz to include our eastern brothers. They are, after all, kin and will serve our armies well. And what to do with the celtae? When the aedui and sequani have been subdued, how will we govern them? My father controls the belgae through his regional gatherings, much like this thengoz but on a smaller scale. I suggest that the celtae should be represented at the thengoz on their incorporation in confederation.

*Several shouts of "Outrageous!" and "Blasphemy!" is heard through the hall as Hêruwulfáz takes the stand*

- Silence...SILENCE! I have no intentions of including celtae filth into this sacred thengoz, the Gods would not allow it. The bástarnòz, the lugôz, vendi and sembu have all been allowed to attend the thengoz because they are, as Rékiwulfáz said, kin amd related through language and worship of the Gods. The vendi and sembu are indeed savages, as deemed by some, and it comes with a rage and ferocity in battle that few non-germans can withstand, as Hadubrand can tell.

*The vendi and sembu representatives nods and are grateful for Héruwulfáz kind words. Héruwulfáz turns to Rékiwulfáz again*

"You can tell your father, that he's free to do whatever he pleases with the aedui, as long as he doesn't send them in his place to this thengoz. If he wishes to rule over them as king, he is more than welcome to do so. By the time you reach his halls, Vindelicoppidos will have fallen and Ansuhárjáz will be free to launch his invasion of the celtae. As soon as Hárjawulfáz returns from his conquest in the south, he will march for the Sequani lands and end the Arverni presence there. Thereafter, who knows what the Gods have decided? Perhaps the next thengoz will be at Bibracte. I call this session of the thengoz closed.

~ Chapter IX ~

(254BC-252BC)

Road to Galla opened!
https://i41.tinypic.com/16ar987.jpg

At the same time as Hêruwulfáz entered Bástárnôzlándám, Hêruwulfáz's oldest son Hárjáwulfáz was reached by words of new developments in the west. The Arverni had been thrown out of their homeland, and the Arverni nobility now were in exile in the land of the Sequani, Sequallra. As an effect of these dramatic events, the powerful celtae tribe known as Volcae ("wolves" in their own language) who had previously been allied to the Arverni had now left their alliance and instead sought to join the Aedui. The Aedui had however been much reluctant to trust the Volcae and the Volcae now stood alone.

The Volcae tribe were located south of the Háttôz, and north of the mountains known as the Alps. More important, the Volcae controlled the river crossings of the Rhenus (Rhine) and thus, from their capital of Vindelicoppidos, they controlled the road into Galla. Although he had fought along the great Ansuhárjáz, Hárjáwulfáz had little experience commanding an entire army, but the opportunity to secure a bridgehead into Galla were too tempting.

https://i43.tinypic.com/mikmkg.jpg

Hárjáwulfáz were still in the land of the Háttôz since the last thengoz, and since the háttôz made regular sorties into Volcae territory, there were no difficulties recruiting an army for marching on Vindelicoppidos. 14.000 young men of the Háttôz gathered near Arctaunon, the capital of Háttôzlándám and when the army were just about to break up, one thousand Heruskôz warriors joined and it was over 15.00 men who crossed the borders into Volcae lands and laid siege to Vindelicoppidos.

https://i43.tinypic.com/106ewcp.jpg

Words of the advancing germans soon spread through the land, and the Volcae prepared their army for the assault. The Volcae were used to the raids of the Háttôz, but it was ages since they had faced an army this large and back then they have had thousands of arverni soldiers in their ranks. Now, the Volcae stood alone and their 10.000 men army would have to face the fury of the germans by their own. As the germans came out of the woods, the Volcae braced themselves, for they knew that this fight would be for the survival of their tribe.

Vindelicoppidos was a typical celtic city, consisting of a hill surrounded by fenced farmhouses, which in turn was surrounded by a wooden wall. The hill did not have a oppidum, and thus the city were much more vulnerable for attacks. The háttôz had only once before set foot on the hill, only to be thrown down immediately afterwards. Hárjáwulfáz had however no intention of being thrown down, and the Swêbóz banner would fly from the top of the hill by the end of the day.

https://i41.tinypic.com/553wja.jpg

Hárjáwulfáz had the walls easily breached, and the Volcae did little to stop him. The Volcae had previously been led by a Arverni, but who now had followed his kinsmen in exile into Sequallra. Cunovindos was the man who had replaced the Arverni general, and although he had seen many battles, he was quite a dull man who didn't make the best of decisions and letting the swêbóz inside the falls would be his greatest mistake.

The háttôz spread through the entire city, breaking into houses to plunder and rape the trapped women. The háttôz took great pride in their skills as raiders, and the following year many children of mixed germanic-celtic descent would be born. Hárjáwulfáz had the hill completely surrounded, and in the lead of his men, he charged upwards from all sides.

The volcae charged downwards the hill and broke the german line at several spots, which caused a confused and crazy battle where only speaking the right language would save you from certain death, and there were surely men who slaughtered allies by mistake. Cunovindos may have been a dull man, but he was strong as an ox and even as he was dragged off his horse, he caused the death of many háttôz warriors before he finally fell under the clubs of the háttôz youths.

https://i42.tinypic.com/24xmhsj.jpg

The swêbóz pressed their advantage even harder after the death of Cunovindos, and although the volcae fought hard, they were soon surrounded from all sides. They would however refused to surrender, for they knew what fate that waited captured prisoners of the háttôz, and thus they fought until the last man fell. Hárjáwulfáz had passed a great test, and proved himself able to command a large army, a skill that would be vital in the war soon to come...

~ Chapter X ~

(252BC-244BC)

The Swêbóz-Aedui War
(Part I)
https://i42.tinypic.com/9kuz9y.jpg

He was Ansuhárjáz, lord of the Belgae and prince of the germans known as markomannôz. In the beginning [ca 260BC], he had conquered all of Belgae and made the Nervae and Bellovacii his subjects. As his kingdom grew, he found himself more and more at edge with the High King Hêruwulfáz. At the fourth Althengoz of the Swêbóz, an opportunity for Ansuhárjáz to show his quality was given. The Aedui celtae, or Wohlôzez in the Swêbóz tongue, had won a long bloody civil war against their Arverni foes and were now exhausted. At the Althengoz, the High King announced the start of the Swêbóz-Aedui War. As Vindelicoppidos, the city of the Volcae, fell to the warriors of the king's son Hárjáwulfáz, the road to Galla opened and huge armies were mustered on both sides. In Belgae and Armoriae, Ansuhárjáz mustered an vicious army of twenty thousand bloodthirsty belgae and in the east, Hêruwulfáz and his son Hárjáwulfáz joined forces and launched their assault on Sequallra, allied to the Arverni and a excellent position from where to start the final blow on Bibracte.

https://i43.tinypic.com/2l1649.jpg

In a bold move, Ansuhárjáz marched on Cenabum, the spiritual capital of the Aedui. Cenabum were the site of the Aedui council, and because of it's sacredness amongst the celtae (and the exhausted Aedui armies), Ansuhárjáz completely overwhelmed the city's defenses and took the city almost without opposition. As the city fell and the celtae were massacred, a few survivors reached Avaricum with the ill news of the fall of Cenabum. The aged Dennoros, a veteran of the Aedui-Arverni civil war and a great general, gathered an enormous army of near twentythree thousand Aedui warriors from Avaricum and Bibracte to take their revenge on the Swêbóz-Belgae invaders, who after the conquest of Cenabum had about equal numbers, ranks filled with greedy celtae who did not know any other masters than gold.

https://i44.tinypic.com/x4q5u8.jpg

Ansuhárjáz and Dennoros were both great generals and the battle would have to be decided by the swords and spears of the common soldier. Ansuhárjáz had the advantage of a larger cavalry wing, albeit lighter and not as disciplined as the Aedui Leuce Epos. The belgae cavalry were originally Myrcharns, horsemen from the islands beyond the sea in the west, which now had joined the armies of the Swêbóz by the promise of plunder and murder, so wicked was the hearts of these men. It would be these men that would prove victorious for the Swêbóz army. In Swêbóz army stood also the Batacorii, belgae warriors who had made an deep impression on Ansuhárjáz in his conquest of Belgae. The Batacorii would prove themselves once more in this battle, as they would both stand up against charge of the heavy infantry of the Aedui, and have the stamina to go on the offensive themselves.

The Aedui arranged their infantry in two long lines, with cavalry guarding the flanks. The Swêbóz, who had taken the high ground, spread their infantry in a long line, with the Batacorii in the middle and the light infantry of the Armoriae, the Bagaudas, on the left along with the Myrcharns. The right flank would be guarded by his most experienced Batacorii, men who looked simple and by the eye would seem as an easy target for the Aedui. Behind the batacorii, the belgae and celtae slingers of Ansuhárjáz would pepper the enemies with stones. By creating a strong left flank, and a seemingly weaker right, Ansuhárjáz would hope to lure the Aedui into concentrating their charges on the right, perfect for the Myrcharns to swing around and charge the celtae in their backs. As it's common in celtae warfare, the Aedui general Dennoros sent his first line in a thunderous charge against the Swêbóz, hoping to brake the germans with one mighty blow.

The Aedui crashed into the Batacorii with full force and many men on both sides fell dead on the spot, pierced by spears and swords with cloven shields and heads, and blood turning the hill into slippery mud. The Aedui fought with a unseen fury, as there were little or no difference between a glorious victory or death on the battlefield to these men and the desire for revenge for Cenabum were the greatest greatest of the all. Ansuhárjáz stood himself in the front line with his bodyguard and had several celtae killed, all the time while keeping his eyes on his flanks and the nervous Dennoros who could be seen riding back and forth behind his own lines, urging the men to fight. Despite the furious charge, the Swêbóz line held and the Batacorii repelled the attackers, who broke ranks and fled back to the safety of their own lines.

From the front, Ansuhárjáz ordered his men forward. He would charge his men into the Aedui before they could launch another assault on his men, who were getting more and more tired. The men, with Ansuhárjáz and the Batacorii in the front, charged down the hill and smashed into the Aedui. The Myrcharns rode as if on fire and by the sound of a hundred horns, charged the Leuce Epos head on. The belgae found new enemy and loud screams rose above the men, as the belgae took great pride and joy in their fighting. Dennoros realized the direness of the situation and charged his Brihentin into the fray. Ansuhárjáz had much fear for the heavy cavalry of the celtae, he had seen the Remi Mairepos cut through men like a knife through warm butter, and thus he ordered the batacorii to stand firm and not charge the Brihentin.

On the left flank, the Myrcharns wrestled with the Leuce Epos both long and hard, with neither side gaining any ground. The entire battle balanced on the fighting on the left flank, if the other side backed down, the backs would be open for attacks. The Leuce Epos were better armed, armored and disciplined, but outnumbered. The Myrcharns were just too many and as soon as the Aedui started to fall dead from their horses, the Aedui flank collapsed. The Myrcharns didn't bother to chase the routing Aedui for long, for they had strict orders to charge the center when possible. The hooves of several hundred horses scared many Aedui, even before the Myrcharns crashed into their backs and sent the battleline in complete disarray.

The rest of the battle was short, as many Aedui lost heart and ran, only to be cut down by the Myrcharns. Dennoros found himself surrounded by belgae infantry, cursing and urging his men to fight on. His words fell for deaf and dead ears, the rout was a fact and Dennoros would have escaped himself, had it not been for a belgae slingshot that knocked him of his horse where he was trampled to death of the hooves of the Myrcharns. The Myrcharns would make a notch on their spears for every man they killed, and there would be many notches after this day.

Ansuhárjáz had defeated the Aedui army. A mere four thousand of the Swêbóz had been killed or injured, while only five hundred of the Aedui had escaped death or captivity. The loss had drained both Avaricum and Bibracte on men, and although Bibracte would soon be reinforced, Avaricum would stand alone with the nearest relief army miles away. At Avaricum, Ansuhárjáz would have to put all his sieging skill into action, for it was both heavily fortified and guarded by a strong, determined garrison.
