Since most navies had some form or other of marines on-board and all used thier navl ratings in amphibious landings or raids are we going to be able to do the same in the game? Am I going to be able to count off a couple hundred matelots and a few companies of marines and form a scratch landing party?

No! one of the early reports said they couldn’t do it with this engine.
They said maybe in a later game…

Sadly Fiskerking is right. There will be no interaction between ships and land, other than landing troops. I was really looking forward to an amphibious assualt on a coastal fort or port town as well.

Maybe next time Beanie or maybe in a expansion :)
I'd much rather storm a beach in 18th century then some of the other timezones presented where I have stormed a certain beach over 19308253023 gazillion times. (D-day, normandy, ww2 time frame)
At least you can board other ships. I wasn't even expecting crews to be visible when CA first announced naval combat, I was just expecting a Sid Meyers type view. So i'm impressed, graphically if nothing else.

I think it would be extremely exciting to storm a beach in Empires. Imagine your platoons of colourfully uniformed soldiers running up the golden sands. In front of them are units of pikemen and muskets, ready to cut your men down. Behind that is a wooden fort, cannons trained on the beach.
Suddenly part of the fort explodes! Your First rate warship has come into range and has let loose a full broadside on the enemy position!
Fun stuff! :2thumbsup:

I think I saw, in one of the land battles screenshots a ship anchored at the harbour. I suppose it would be nice if that ship could fire on the land units if in range :juggle2:.
Amphibious landings would just be awsome....*sigh*

Cheers, but I didn't mean a battle where an amphibious landing takes place. I mean, is it possible to disembark marines and sailors as an "army"? Not actual interaction between naval and land units, just using the men on your ships as you would a transported army?

Doubt it. Unless you are carrying marines, in which case you might be able to use them as an army if you need one in a hurry.

Yes, that's what I meant, using on-board troops. Most Western navies had them and sailors were often used as well.

Well it sounds like something which wouldn't be too difficult to mod, even if it isn't in the game. It's not something we will here about till the game is released I think.

Just eye candy I'm afraid. I am guessing that there is no connection between the naval battle engine and the land battle engine.

That is what I think too.
As for moding it in…I think CA gave it a look and that is why they said not this iteration. It may take a rework of the engine.
I would love to see it but if we are stuck we are stuck
However, I think I heard that ships in port may be captured when the City is taken…like I said, I think I heard that, but don’t quote me.

I think I remember reading about ships in port being taken as well. Let's hope that feature does make it in, as it is quite realistic. Especially if the port was being blockaded.

just to re-itterate, I'm not asking for in-game-battle amphibious landings, just the ability to use the men on my ships as if they were army units being transported.

I doubt that too as, if am correct about the separate engines, then there would be no "naval" unit included in the land army - and to add one or more would take a bunch of coding - and what happens to the ships if you convert their crews to land units? I think that CA probably looked at doing these things and decided, as another posted stated; "not for this interation."

Now that would be a nice feature. And even better would be a requirment to pay to crew captured ships. That is probably a freebie for any captured vessel.
