A particularly evil tactic of mine is to send a ton of bishops (or priests, or alims) into a province of a different religion and convert the populace to at least 50% of YOUR religion before sending in the multitude of spys to foster rebellion. What does this mean? Well causing rebellion in a provence noramlly causes a peasant rebellion, but when rebellion occurs in a provence with a majority of the population having a different religion then you get a religious rebellion made up of rather strong units (Royal Knights, Chiv MAA). Tons of fun. Anyhow, during this I have noticed that it is beneficial to start out with a large number of bishops when the faith you wish to convert the provence to is very low, and then DECREASE the number as that provence becomes more and more inclined to worship God in your chosen way. It seems that when a provence gets to around 55-65% Catholic(or whatever you are tyring to get them to be) 10 bishops don't seem to increase it further and sometimes decrease it. Anyone notice this? Any ideas as to why?

Catholic Bishop or Orthodox Bishop?

Catholic Bishop convert at less than a half the rate as Cardinal (for Catholic) and Orthodox Bishop (for Orthodox).

Alim convert at the same rate as Catholic Bishop. Ulama convert at the same rate as Cardinal and Orthodox bishop.

Also, build church, monastery, mosque. These buildings convert 10% (Faith propagation = 0.1, not sure if it is calculated as 10%) of the population each year. Cathedral and Grand Mosque convert 15% (Faith Propagation = 0.15) each year.

Those who refuse to change their religion, you have to use inquisitor and grand inquisitor to kill them. There is no equivalent for Muslim.

I think governor's piety will effect the faith of the people he governs too.

Edit: religious agents of other religion will hinder the convert process of your religious agents.

Just to clear this up some:

(Catholic / Orthodox / Muslim)

Bishop / Priest / Alim is the first level religious agent, available at the common religious building. (Church / Church / Mosque.)

Cardinal / Bishop / Ulama is the second level religious agent, available at the one-per-faction religious building. (Cathedral / Cathedral / Grand Mosque.)

Apparently, the second level religious agents, according to pdoan8, convert at twice the rate of the first level religious agents. Which is just as well, because while you can have 20 or more Churches (etc), you can only have one Cathedral (etc). Too bad. I'd like to have Cathedrals in Constantinople and Rome. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I think that they can't convert more because the religion of the faction that owns the province has an effect on the religion. It might be even relative to the number of troops present in the province. Also, the neighbouring provinces radiate the religious influence. I've noticed that, e.g., my catholic provinces bordering muslim faction get an increase of muslim population, and that it's harder to convert the provinces with lots of troops in them.

While playing Byz on Early/Easy, I owned Naples. For some reason, the Papal States and Rome were running about 35% Orthodox. Trouble is, I'd NEVER sent a religious agent into their territory. So I'd say that religion can bleed over.

According to the unit file the level 1 'holys' give +2% and the level 2 ones give +5% to faith

Well they're not all the same for each religion. So the above is true, however not for everyone. I just forgot which one does which.

The names are different for each religion, but if viewed as level 1 & level 2 units, they DO give +2% & +5% respectively.

I've just checked the file again, and this is the info in the column headed: 'This describes how much the unit affects the Faith of the followers for each religion'.

So i'm pretty sure it's right http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
