In my last 2 campaigns I have got the halberdiers with gold sword & gold armour. This unit is probably the most devasting unit I have seen on the battlefield. I even built a cathedral in the main province I produce these & these guys kick arse for the lord. They are also very durable & the low morale can be overcome by the cathredal & generals v&v's. Its a pity about their speed but dam when they do get going I haven't seen a unit stand against them that includes high valour AUM. I have yet to see how they perform against jannssary heavy infantry but i'm sure they will make short work of the turkish lapdogs. They are now essential in all my armies with my 3 other fav units Feudal sergeants, gallowglasses & arbalests. Btw a great tatic I have been using is use your hal's to hold the line & flank with the gallowglasses in wedge when the gallowglasses hit the back of the enemy unit watch the amount of the enemy unit that die in the first few seconds of melee

I used a lot of halberdiers in my Russian campaign, because that's about the only infantry I could produce above spearmen. I would have to say that halberdiers with arbalests are pretty hard to beat. Unless you are fighting in Syria. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif Poor little buggers, got fried by the sun and then torched by those little nappy throwers. I think I'll leave the home next time I attack a desert province.

My best halberdier story was when I was getting my castle assaulted in Palestine. I was defending with 10 halberdiers and about 70 arbalests. The Turks had placed a mangonel right out in front of the front gate with the rest of the army behind the mangonel. I was thinking that I could place my arbalests outside and zip off a couple of shots on the mangonel crew before Turks could force them back into the castle. I start the battle and shoot the mangonel crew with the arbalests. A saracem unit moves towards the arbalests while they reload for a second volley. I waited a little too long to move the arbalests back into the castle and the saracem units caught the last arbalests coming through the gate. The gate didn't shut and the saracem started to stream through it. So I move the 10 halberdiers in to hold the saracem while the arbalsts can fall back. Those 10 halberdiers pushed 200 saracem right back out the gate. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif The gate closes and about 4 halberdiers are fighting off over 1000 turks. When there was only one halberdier left, he routed and ran back into the castle letting the whole turkish army back into the castle. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif I wish I could just lock the gate when that happens.

I had a top line unit of Halberds in a bridge crossing push across the bridge and halfway up a hill and still go strong after losing a third of their guys. They are an extremely difficult enemy to contain and they will butcher cavalry like it's peasants. Their ability to butcher cavalry makes them really tough to flank effectively.

They suffer against arrows though, but the AI isn't really aware of this.

I am a little baffled by the tech tree. Why are halberdiers a citadel level unit and pikemen are a fortress level? It has been my experience that halberdiers are superior to pikemen. Granted pikemen are cheaper than halberdiers, but my halberdiers always have amuch higher kill ratio than my pikemen. There seems to be little incentive to have a county militia unless you have Switzerland(post patch). IMHO

Speaking of Switzerland, the Swiss halberdiers kind of suck compared to regular halberdiers. I trained a few of them in my present campaign and they did not seem to live up to my expectations of being uber halberdiers.

I think halberdiers work the best in the center of the line. I like to hold the flanks and blow out the center. Halberdiers work pretty well at breaking the enemy line so that you cavalry can exploit through the middle of the enemy line.

swiss halbs and normal halbs are not what swiss pike are to normal pike...

they are a different unit, halbs are heavy armour and slow...
swis halbs are light armour, quick, and good morale - use them for the same job and you'll be dissapointed...

yeah I love the swiss halb's there morale is excellent & they can give heavy cav a good go. They are ideal for the desert as they are more lightly armoured. They are more versitile then the normal halberdiers as they are fast & are excellent at flanking. They don't do aswell as normal Hal's against AUM but thats becuase they aren't as heavily armoured & since the AUM have no armour peircing they can pretty much wipe the floor with the swiss halb's.
I still prefer normal halb's with max armour & weapon upgrade & they are cheaper. I just wish I didn't have to build that stupid university in poland so I could have built my cathredal in bohemia where i produce halb's

When I said that halberdiers are crappy in MP, I was referring to regular halberdiers, not the swiss halberdiers. Anyway the reason that halberdiers suck in MP is because they have terrible terrible morale.
