Ok, I am in the game of my life. I am playing single player as Mori. I have taken the entire West end of the island eliminating all the clans except Hojo. I stopped to recuperate and rebuild when Hojo appeared and to my dismay arrived with around 30,000 troops on one territory. We were still at peace until Hojo himself and about 2,000 troops captured one of my provices. (I just surrendered the thing, I scrambled all my troops into about 3 provinces, leaving behind some very nice property. Well, I moved my Daiymo into the Fray, and they are being attacked every season by 7,000 plus troops. So far my Daiymo is holding out...but I doubt he can keep it up for long. He is now a level 7 and my troops with him are all 3 and 4 honor.

But listen to this...Lord Hojo appeared in the province next to the one with 30,000 plus troops in it, so I left my daiymo to hold the fort and attacked with all available troops, about 2,000. I trapped him and ended up killing him after a very hard battle, he had no heirs so Hojo is Ronin now. But that province with 30,000 plus troops is continuing to attack my Daiymo. What do I do? They are easier to defeat, but I will not be able to survive for many years if they continue their onslaught.
Thanks for all your help in the past, I really need it now...

Not long ago I was playing Mori in Hard level, and I faced similar situation in year 1565 (not 30,000 though, roughly about 9000). I guess you are more careful and conservative than I am, so the AIs got the time to build up such a horrible army.

Since the ronins don't recruit, I think you can buy time by slowly run down their existing troops. Here is what I would do.

(1) Distract them. You can attack the provinces with little garrison, and pull back all armies right after you conquer it. You can also use the port bug to send your army to their back. You should be able to occupy some good ones like Mutsu and Dewa with little resistance. Then AI ronin will divide a few troops to take it back, and here comes your chance.

(2) Exchange time with space. Since ronin cannot recruit as normal clans, you can just let them take what they want, but keep doing skirmish to wear them down. Hold the river provinces well so you can make your best to kill their army.

(3) Ninja assassination. Ronins also have good generals, but they are not protected by their own spies (bcz they cannot make). If your general is 3 ranks higher than them, you should win very easily even if severely outnumbered.

Good luck! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I agree
Let him take a province, the reconquer it, u will kill hundreds of men, do it again and again.
You should move away from that province that is being atacked, AI will garrison it weakly, u can take it again and again.

thanks for you reply, I have been doing just that, out of necessity. However I just lost the river province that I had successfully held for 8 turns. I had 681 troops and the ronin sent over 7,000 against me, I fought the hard fight with only about 3 minutes left in the battle, my troops exausted, and down to about 370 left, I routed and lost that provice. There were just too many. I would make them rout and they would send more fresh units to replace them. The finally had about 10 calvary archers on the field and me with no archers were just getting ripped apart so, I thought I should attack with everything so they would rout off the field, it didn't work and my guys started to rout. That is when my level 7 daiymo routed...it was over at that point. I tried to rally, but once those calvary started charging, my troops wouldn't stop. Now I have to just whittle away at them as best I can. I have a total of about 6,000 troops left, they have maybe 20,000 left. I don't know if I can win this one...but I won't stop trying. Thanks for your help, I will use it.

I guess you can prevent arrow depletion by setting up rotations. Say you have 3 archer units, then just make them into 3 shifts. (Maybe you need more than 3) Only one unit fires at one time. And one naginata stand forward to hold the bridge, after they got tired use another, and so on. When they got shot, move them back until another enemy unit comes.

In case you are not aware of, you can stop your archers from firing by toggling the "fire at will" icon which is on the top right of the screen. Then you can save more arrows.

Not only the bridges but the mountains are great, too. In Mino and Shinano, you can put all your units on the peak of the big mountain on the left before the the battle begins. The enemy will have a long uphill march -- and we will give them a waterfall of charge. Usually you will lose about 100 but take out their 500 - and kill their general if you have cavalry. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
