View Full Version : Clarification on Best Buy Special Edition

According to the CA website and the forums, it is clear that there is an unlock code for the USS Constitution if you buy from best buy in the states. However, best buy's website is lame and doesn't say anything about that. There is also no mention of the special forces edition coming with a Constitution unlock code on best buy's website OR on the CA website. Look, CA, I want you to take my money. I am so excited about this game I am willing to let you rip my off by charging $20 for six extra units. However, can't you at least make it easy for you to take my money and ask Best Buy to put the Constitution unlock code on their website so I can feel easy ordering from them and waiting for the game to come instead of just buying it on Steam...unless that is what you secretly want? Some special kick-back if Steam gets a certain market share? Hmmmmm....

For real though, anyone have official word from CA about the Special Forces Edition from Best Buy coming with an unlock code.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered already but I could only find mention of the normal edition when searching the forum.

According to Best Buy, no one is getting a Constitution unlock code in the States!

Dear X,

This is Shannon with Best Buy Customer Care. I hope that you are well today.
I will be more than happy to assist you today. I have researched the issue and I do not see that there is an offer to receive a special code with the purchase of the game Empire: Total War. Normally special promotions for free codes and downloads are outlined and I do not see any promotions on this game.

I apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused you and we thank you for being a loyal Best Buy customer.

Thats kinda stupid I mean who else but the americans would want the constitution the most?

Well play.com snapped it up for some reason. I am sure they could have had something else if they had wanted.

I ordered from play.com so I could get that unit and the price was good. I am an American but live in Germany.

I don’t know if play ships to the states but I knew when it said “Exclusive Unit“…that best buy was not going to have it…

I have been all over this issue from the start, and I think it will all work out, regardless of how confusing it's been made.

Best Buy representatives have no clue and I haven't been able to get any help from them.

But if you look at the image of the regular edition box on bestbuy.com, there is a sticker at the top right for the USS Constitution. Best Buy's logo is also at the bottom right, as part of the box. This, along with other research, leads me to believe that the USS Constitution will be an in-box item for all Best Buy customers, whether they pre-order or pickup in-store.

My only question at this point is whether the USS Constitution will be offered with the Special Forces edition of the game, as there is no similar sticker on that box image on bestbuy.com. That will be a tough choice, if it's a choice between Regular Edition of game with USS Constitution, and Special Forces edition of the game without the USS Constitution.

Interesting, if you search Best Buy Canada's site, they differentiate between the Regular Edition of the game, and the Best Buy Exclusive Regular Edition of the game.

Welcome to the ORG DogFish. :2thumbsup:
I was under the understanding that the unlock code comes with both versions of the game from Play.com

I don’t know if play ships to the states but I knew when it said “Exclusive Unit“…that best buy was not going to have it…

But Best Buy DOES have it:

From Best Buy Canada Website:

"The Best Buy Empire Total War also includes downloadable USS Constitution."

There's just no mention of it on Best Buy US's site. But the same sticker for the USS Constitution is on both websites' Regular Edition of the game, indicating that it will be available for US Customers as well.

Thanks Grayblades! I've been a very long time lurker, just recently started posting on the official forums, now here, and am slowly gravitating towards the org being my totalwar homebase. At some point I'm looking to organize, or at least contribute to, some mods for this game (haven't done that in a loooong time, but then this game is more exciting for me than most... specifically an ACW mod, and/or an ancient or Rome conversion), and the org looks to be a great place and community to do so (and to be a part of).

Back to the exclusive unit issue, hopefully Best Buy will be doing that same thing. My main concern in that regard is that they might of done a "Best Buy Exclusive" boxed version of the regular edition of the game in lieu of a pre-order code, such as is listed on Best Buy Canada's site, and will only be including the USS Constitution with that, so they can save money and not have a whole separate SKU for a "Best Buy Exclusive Special Forces Edition" with the USS Constitution. I fear that is how likely is.

Is there a restriction on editing posts? I just realized I had some atrocious mistakes in my last post (That's what I get for multitasking), and didn't see where I could edit it to correct them.

You will get the power to edit your posts when you get the rank of member. How to acheive this rank I'm not totally sure as I wasnt paying attention when I got it but I'd guess its a week or 2 of good behavior

You can't edit your posts until you get full membership. Just be a nice guy and wait two weeks, post some good posts and you will become a member.

Ok, cool. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking a button for it, I get irked at myself with silly grammatical errors like "I fear that is how likely is." :clown:

Why the heck hasn't someone from CA cleared all this up. They supposedly check the Org and Center and this is a non-spoiler question as to how they get to take my money. The release of this game has to be one of the worst major releases in the history of gaming, especially in the last 10 years. I get that they want to have tons of different editions to get deals with different suppliers but they should at least explain the options to the consumer. Right now I am only going to pay 49.99 but if they simply clarify things in one clear post on the Org they will get another 20 bucks. And I am sure I am not the only one who is confused.

Can anyone think of a reason why they would not clear things up for us? :help:

My guess would involve something that rhymes with Mega. It can vary greatly based upon what kind of publishing and distribution deal they have set up with CA, but it may well be something completely out of CA's hands.

Ho-oh, a French joke. :P

CA only makes the game, the major distribution stuff is all Sega.

I understand it is out of CA's hands but that doesn't mean they are out of the loop. I have tried contacting Best Buy and Sega but have gotten no clear response. :wall:

Mega doesn't really rhyme with sega, since the accent is on the first syllable, this would be a feminine rhyme, but the first vowels don't match.

Theres no pronounciation on the internet.

I have preordered the regular edition. I didn't think that the special edition was worth so much more, especially when mods will fill in the units that I am missing.

While the Special Edition is a rip off on steam I think the map is a sweet but am not going to get the special forces without the Constitution.

Welcome to the Org Dogfish :2thumbsup:. You'll be a Member soon enough. There's no actual time limit for Membership, all you have to do is post within the rules and eventually a Mod will notice you :beam:.

Play.com has the U.S.S Constitution

Amazon.com has the Dahomey Amazons

Game.co.uk has the Prussian Death's Head Hussars.

At first glance, you would have thought. However, when they are spoken similar to this -

Meg-a Sey-ga

Doesn't work at all.

Right Sir Beane, but not all of us are from the UK so that isn't helpful at all to us.

I ended up with the USS Constitution, but I wish I had got the Hussars now. Well, like I said, the mods will make up for it. ~:)

Unfortunately Game.co.uk was selling the game for more than the other two, otherwise I would have gone for the Hussars as well.
