This thread is there to help people who have problems running the game. :2thumbsup:

This was totally pevergreen's idea btw, I can't take credit for it. :laugh4:

Will ETW have the same CTD problems that MTW had?

Given that the game uses an entirely different engine, no.

I have CTD problems when playing MTW. So, will I probably have CTD problems with ETW?

Thanks.

Like I mentioned in the hardware thread, other than the fact it is developed by the same company there are no similarities between the two games. Empire uses a new engine with new code. It will not suffer from the same problems as MTW.

If you have meet the system requirements you should have no problem playing the game.

EDIT: I'm merging this thread into the Hardware Problems thread.

This is good advice :2thumbsup:. If you can run the demo without problems then the game should be fine. If not, tell us here and we will do our best to help you fix it.

What are CTD problems?

Sir Beane
03-03-2009, 21:20
What are CTD problems?

It stands for Crash To Desktop, where the game closes itself and boots you back to the desktop without warning. They can be caused for any number of different reasons, depending on the circumstances.

You mean "the game is currently unavailable"?

While scrolling about the campaign map, my screen went blue with some text, said it was dumping memory onto a disk. This is extremely annoying since I just bought 4GB RAM for Empire. There are my specs:

64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
465GB Memory
4GB DDR2 RAM at 800MHz
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS

I always have trouble at first with TW games. MTW didn't work on my old PC, M2TW caused crashes, now when I think I'm fine I get this. :wall:

EDIT: And it happened again. I'm sick of this and I feel like just giving up on PC games.

Well after playing many hours this game does need a few patches. I have so far 3 CTD and my brother has had several. My other brother has had any yet but then again he has only played for about 1 hour.

Also for some reason the campaing map is laggy for me. And no it isn't because I have a crappy computer. Anyways this game needs some patches for me to fully enjoy it.

With the Demo I experienced some Crashes not COD a full crash Computer just reboots. Now when I bring up Campaign it crashes every times usually within first min. It is unplayable and with a 2 and a half hour install I really do not want re-install

I've had one CTD the first time a naval battle was flagged in a campaign. Hasn't recurred.

Otherwise, generally OK, although one interesting bug in that the screen pans when I move the mouse to the left border, but not when I move it to the right and on to the second monitor...

I haz a general hardware problem.
So I buy the graphics card Lemur recommended, and I proceed to take out the old gt 7600 geforce I had; without uninstalling it. I realise my mistake and slot it back in, only to discover to my horror that I need to “select a proper boot device”. I figure that means the instalation Cd that came with the original card, but I threw that out years ago. Hoping for the best, I put my new card in anyway, to no avail. Any ideas on how I can get out of this?

You can uninstall any driver from the software screen in windows. After that restart your computer with the new card in it and install the new driver. If you think that the old driver isn't removed properly use programs like IIRC drivercleaner or drivermanager to remove the last parts.

When I try to load my campaign the game crashes. I tried loading different save games, but they all crash. I tried rebooting my computer, but I still can't get it to work. Anybody else experience this?

Edit: I tried loading one of my earliest save games and it worked. The later saves (around turn 96) still don't work.

Boot it in safe mode - clean out any old driver remnants. Then reboot and Windows should be in 680x800 rez at this point. Then you install your new drivers and you should be all set.

Ok, so I realise that it was due to the hard drive cable falling out whilst putting my new card in (HURR DURR), but I have a new problem. I was able to boot up windows, and uninstall the nvidia driver and disable the motherboard graphics driver, as the instructions told me to do. However, I now have a new problem, as when I boot up with the new card in I have a horribly trippy mess, which is impossible to use, and when I use the motherboard directly, I find that all I get is a black screen upon getting to the login screen (I suspect that the same thing appearsd behind the trippy mess as well.). Any ideas on how to solve this conundrum? A reply as quickly as possible would be very much appreciated, and everyone who helps will get a balloon, and the person who solves this for me will be showered with baloons.

No, but I've uninstalled the drivers, so I don't see how that would work. But on the other hand, when I boot up, I still see the same nvidia logo flash up on the screen, suggesting that I uninstalled the wrong thing. Hmm. I'll go try now. And if it does work, what should I uninstall, and where would it be?

Windows should be able to recognise and get basic functionality out of any graphics card without specifically installing a driver.

Subotan

It doesn't. I've still got a big black screen when I get to the login screen. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve it? I'm guessing that this isn't a graphics card problem, and may have something to do with me disabling the wrong thing. If so, how would I be able to reactivate this thing (Which I am not sure what the name is) without having to login, or bypass the login screen?

S: Disabling the wrong thing? What did you do to disable things? (What were you trying to disable?)

We were trying to disable the old graphics drivers, in both the old card and the motherboard. We unistalled something from the "nvidia Desktop Manager", which I suspect was not the nvidia driver. And disabled what we think was the motherbaord graphics driver. We went into Add/Remove programs and Device Manager.

Are you sure you're seating the cards properly? That used to be a problem with AGP cards.

Yes.

Can you boot into safe mode?

Nope.

Can you see the POST checks?

We don't even know what they are.

Get into BIOS?

Yes, we are messing with that now. Any advice on how to get graphics drivers up and running from there?

Just to confirm, you can see Windows (XP or Vista?) starting normally (wavy flag and all) until you get to the login screen? Can you describe the trippy mess?

You see a black screen at login with the motherboard graphics: can you get into the BIOS using your motherboard integrated graphics? You won't be able to touch the drivers from BIOS, I'm just trying to narrow down the possibilities.

On the solutions front, do you have any kind of windows disc or a boot disc? Unrelatedly, do you have access to a graphics card that doesn't use the PCIe port (may or may not help, depending on previous answers)?

Actually I got in touch with my regular Technician. Apparantly the problem was that the newest video card drivers by Nvidia were actualy worse than the older ones (oh the irony).

To all you who have been having my problem with a Nvidia card, on vista 64, dont get the 182 version, download this one (http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/winvista_x64_180.48_whql_uk.html)instead. It should fix it.

I've got a weird problem. Playing as the Dutch, three times when I've tried to make trade aggrements with Hannover or Westphalia I've got the Blue Screen of Death and the following message:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen apears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is
identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check
with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video
adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable
BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need
to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your
cpmputer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then
select Safe Mode.

Just to confirm, you can see Windows (XP or Vista?) starting normally (wavy flag and all) until you get to the login screen?

Yes. Also, we attempted to login once we got to the "black screen" after the flag, and we found that we could login to my account. We also tried to install the driver for my new card, but it's nigh-impossible when you have no idea where your cursor is. I'm thinking that this means that Windows doesn't think there is a problem, and is chugging away, whilst not realising that a driver is missing, and that it isn't being displayed on the screen.

Can you describe the trippy mess?

It's quite weird. It seems to seperate into "columns", and of various garish colours (Pink/Green/White/Octarine) However, it doesn't stop me from physically logging in. It also appears to be "on top" of what was otherwise normally happening, if that makes sense.

You see a black screen at login with the motherboard graphics: can you get into the BIOS using your motherboard integrated graphics?

Yes.

You won't be able to touch the drivers from BIOS, I'm just trying to narrow down the possibilities.

Crap.

On the solutions front, do you have any kind of windows disc or a boot disc?
Yes, we're thinking about transferring most of the files onto a new hardrive, and reinstalling windows onto that new backup hardrive.

(Unrelatedly, do you have access to a graphics card that doesn't use the PCIe port (may or may not help, depending on previous answers)?

I'm not sure, but I doubt it.

Again, thanks for being so helpful.

Hi ive got a couple of graphical problems with empire and im not sure if its my hardware not being up to scratch or a bug that's the problem so I thought I would ask for some advice.

1st like in the demo I cant set anything higher than medium other than unit size and some of the check boxes are disabled too. Now I know my computer cant run things maxed out but I had the Volumetric Effects (fog) working fine in the demo and I cant use them now. Also the water on land maps dose not show its just a black mass which is another thing that worked in the demo but not now.

So is this a hardware problem that I had or is it something I can fix with out an upgrade?

My system is:

A quick question... Performance on the campaign map is sort of... sluggish. I get 50+ FPS (according to Fraps), but still, there are significant pauses sometimes, and, well, it doesn't feel fluid. My PC is well above recommended, so that's not a problem, I was just wondering if it's my system, or is it a general problem.

Extra ram doesn't help if the game doesn't need it, 2 GB should be enough but you might try
quitting any other programs in case one of them was using a ton of ram.

Your problem sounds like it's the video card driver though, I had no luck at all with nvidia 182.06,
182.08 was better and is playable but I'm still having trouble. I'm happy with the ones greyblade
recommended above, I can finally alt-tab to windows desktop w/o crashing! I have a 8800 GTS 320 mb,
these have worked for at least a couple people, but couldn't find these listed in nvidias 'driver archive'.

You never said what your old card was, what your new card is, what m/b you have or what operating system you're running ( xp/vista ).
I searched and saw lemur recommended an asus card, if you got one of those you should go to the asus support forum where they'll be more expert. vip.asus.com (http://vip.asus.com/forum/topic.aspx?board_id=9&SLanguage=en-us)

in xp to switch to new videocard, or update drivers even, i do this.
( oh first I download 'driver sweeper' google for it, is at guru3d, free program )

start button -> settings -> control panel -> Add or remove programs

and uninstall drivers there, i have nvidia card so it's listed as 'Nvidia' there.

then reboot, hit F8 key a lot ( right as computer starts, before windows ) and select 'safe mode' to boot to.

run driver sweeper, select ONLY video driver to clean up after.

* at this point i'd switch old card for new if switching cards *

reboot to normal windows ( running at some realllly low resolution )

when hardware wizard thing appears saying it's found new hardware CLICK CANCEL

go to where the new driver installation files are ( downloaded or on cd, whatever ) and
install using those.

I have no idea how to checjk the motherboard, and I have a Sapphire card. I'm running XP. My old card soesn't matter, because it's not like I'm ever going back to that now.

The only graphics driver I have running is on the motherboard; last time I disabled that, I got a black screen that I was unable to see out of.

your old card might matter if you've incompletely uninstalled the drivers, still, sounds like you might have a defective card, it happens. if you can't even get to windows you should be talking to sapphire experts, I think their semi-official support forum is

I was wondering if I could get alittle help here before I pulled my hair out completely...

I just installed Empire...
Everything seems to run fine... I select my campaign, select a faction... the map loads up...

After approx. 5 minutes of play the game freezes EVERY SINGLE TIME... most times it will turn off my monitor, other times it will reboot my machine, still other times the monitor will go blank, then come right back to the screen it froze on.

-There are no error messages on screen or in any system logs.
-There is no overheating.

This does not happen with any other game I play on this computer...

I have upgraded my video drivers to the newest versions... this did not help.
I changed the game video settings to the lowest possible selections as per the knowledge base,
this did not help...

Has anyone out there experienced this?
Anyone have any advice or suggestions?
My next step... is to maybe reinstall the game?

My Specs...
- Athlon64 3200+ (2.21mhz)
- 1.25 RAM
- Vid Card = RADEON X1650 w/ 512 memory. (ATI driver: using Catalyst 9.2)

SOS. SOS. SOS. SOS. SOS.

Hello!

Although many may complain about their problems with ETW I think mine is quite different:
The game produces a BSOD after the initial copyright screen. It says:
„Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_ EQUAL“
STOP 0x0000001d (0x000000, 0x000002, 0x000001, 0xb5b33b9a) save dump.exe
Chaud.sys – Address B5B33B9A base at B5B28000, Date Stamp 43b4611b

This error is permanent and hasn’t changed after updates of the game and the graphics card.

Hopefully anyone can help!
Thx

Hi i am just writing to see whether you think i will have any problems. My computer specs. are:

Windows XP Home
AMD Athlon 2600+
1.512 GB RAM
128 MB Dedicated INVIDIA

any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Banick

Your specs are very low and you do not have a real video card - you have an "integrated' video card with your mobo. You will not be able to play with that sety-up.

First post after looking at this site for years!

I started a game on the minimum video settings (my PC is around about the minimum) and it played quite happily.

I then decided to try and change the settings up one by one to see what my PC could tolerate, but on my first attempt my saved games would not load; they get so far and then the screen goes white and then it crashes to desktop (CTD). Subsequent re-loading of the game and then setting the graphics back to the lowest didn't solve the problem (even after a re-boot).

My last resort to get the game back was to start a new campaign, which then worked just as happily as before.

I have since had the first patch for my game and I am loathe to try and see if I can change the graphics in case I lose my current saved game as before. Any ideas?

I have almost no problems with the game. The only issue I'm finding is the movies are stuttering, they stall and pick up again every couple of seconds. I'd think that the movies are bink video rather than game engine generated cutscenes, so video settings should not apply. Anyone else having this issue?

If it's important, it's a new computer.

Try this fix if the video plays OK and it is just a sound issue.

what's that use for video? if you go
control panel -> display -> adaptor tab
it should say there, all i could suggest is update drivers for whatever chip that uses and contact support to see if there's a way to reset video to default settings.

What's your video card? Ultra is disabled on mine but the drop down menus list ultra texture settings.

I'd guess the reason is the ultra texture settings would use more memory than your card has but I can't see in your computer from here so it's just a guess. There's a blog post at the .com site where one of 'em details how much memory will be used by each setting at each resolution.

Oh, bet you could bump up the quality at a lower resolution if it is a video card memory limit reason.

well there's audio trying to go to the sound card while video is trying to go to the video card, either one pausing might pause the other.

Okay, so I have the game running without any crashes, and I'm enjoying it, but the only thing is that to make it playable I had to put the settings on low. I'd be fine with that, but the thing is I feel like my rig should be able to handle higher settings than that. Indeed, ETW thinks my rig can handle higher settings than that; almost nothing is grayed out as unavailable (only one check box).

Here is my hardware:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz
2 GB RAM
GeForce 8500GT 512 mb
Windows Vista-32

I defrag once a week, I turned off a lot of non-essential processes, I have tons of room on my hard drive (I even increased my virtual memory allocation), I decreased the in-game resolution, and I increased the power settings to Al Gore alert levels. I realize I'll need a better video card and probably more RAM to run on the ultra settings with all the extras, but I figured this would be good enough to run on medium-high and maintain a smooth framerate in all but the must hectic of battles. Am I wrong, or is something not right with the performance I'm getting?

Before I started playing around with all the individual custom settings I figured I'd ask if maybe there's something I'm missing here.

Thanks Barkhorn. How do I find out my video card type?

Run "Dxdaig" again.

This will get you to the DirectX screens. Hit the Save Information button on the bottom. This will save a notepad file of all of your info. Open this file - go to the third "block" of information, "Display Devices" - and copy over the first 11 lines to a reply. That will tell us what we are working with here.

RAM:
RAM is now dirt cheap*** and you should really max out what you can fit into your mother board. You will need to find out what type odf mobo you have and the type of RAM that it can accommodate. XP will make use of 3 Gigs and change so if your mobo can accommodate 4 Gigs then that is what you want to put in your box.

***I bought on newegg.com recently for $13.00 per Gig.

OK - I was afraid of this. You actually do not have a video card - you have an integrated graphics card that is part of the mobo.

Chip type: GeForce 6100 nForce 405
DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC

You are basically dead in the water here as that 256MB is not card memory - but actually the mobo stealing from your RAM. Im guessing you have a Dell or an HP - those b'st'rds are famous for providing a fairly decent CPU and then stiffing you on the RAM and GPU. Your rig is just not a gamers rig and you will not be able to play any games of recent vintage.

In order to play you need to:
- Buy a decent GPU and install it. Go to newegg.com and get at least a 512MB card
- When you install it you will have to go into your mobo BIOS and revise the display setting from Integrated to stand alone card (this should be easy)
- Buy as much RAM as your mobo can handle - it is cheap and it helps

Sorry for the bad news but that's the way it is.

MOHR RAM

RAM solves most problems to do with crashes etc. If you've got XP, two gb will be fine, Vista, you'll need four gb.

Should be a straightforward BIOS setting change. But I've never had on board graphics so I've never had to make these types of changes myself. :embarassed:

Which brings up a related piece of advice. Be sure to get the dimensions of the video card before you buy. Cards today are pretty large and your need to make sure it will fit in your case.

second the advice about ram, but for both ram and video card make sure it'll fit in your machine as
that is a somewhat old processor. you can google for how to id a motherboard, i found biosagentplus.com
worked on mine for free but i wouldn't recommend using their paid service to get driver/bios updates.
should always get those for free from the manufacturer. Anyhow, clicking the BIOS entry on that id'd my m/b.

your memory is almost certainly DDR, your video card might be AGP or PCIe which is why you need to check before you buy one.

Odd side note to this one, I just had to stick a video card in one of the computers here at work because the on-board IGP was going out. The BIOS for that particular system doesn't have an option to disable the built in video; instead it had a setting that defaulted to using the video card in the slot as priority over the IGP, so it was automatic.

The setting is usually found in the Integrated Peripherals section of the BIOS, though.

You didn't really describe your issue so no idea if that memory link is the cause.
is it happening on battle map or campaign map?
after a long time playing?
in huge battles with lare unit sizes?

My CTDs are irritating but they happen on the campaign map primarily, like when I ask a ship to go to a port, or sometimes just clicking on a fleet. When I alt-tab back to windows and check memory I it's
well under 1GB so I know i'm not near the memory limit that link talks about and it doesn't affect me.

I'm just getting crashes due to the unfinished debugging, irritating but I expected it as that's how M2TW was and rome before it and maybe MTW but that's too long for my shoddy memory to recall. If I was sensible I'd have waited a bit longer, but M2TW was like 4 months for first patch and this was 1 week so i'm hopefuller.

never had any problems playing any games except this one. my monitor will just ramdomly shut off and not come back on even though my pc is still running. this has never happened before its so weird.

I don't know if you're still having this problem, but I had this problem a year or so ago, and finally determined that it was a shot power supply.

how much memory do you have?
if you have enough and get that error, maybe this link is useful http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=238484

if it's not memory you may be stuck until they get the next patch out, your video card can handle playing at that resolution and the error shows up in empire.exe so it's not your video card. And I assume you have some free disk space..

Anyone else experiencing isues on an core i7, Nvidia gtx 200 series and DDR3 system on vista?

Or better yet, could anyone tell me if my hardware is causing the insane amounts of CTDs I get?

I also have an I7-940 CPU and a GTX285 1gb card with 6 gigs of 1600 mhz ram and was up to about a CTD every 15 to 30 minutes. I am running Vista 64 bit also. I also experienced most of my crashes in the strategy map, and occasionally upon exiting or entering the battle map. Constantly losing progress when one has just won a tough battle is no fun, so I had simply stopped playing.

Then yesterday, I came across a post at the Steam forums about Nvidia drivers. It seems that the last two driver releases --182.08 on March 3 and 182.06 on Feb 18 were made so close to the release of the game that CA had no opportunity to play test the game with them. The poster mentioned that he had simply gone back to the previous driver release 181.22 which was made at the end of January and it had all but eliminated his CTD's

I did exactly the same yesterday morning and have not had a single crash in two straight days of playing--at least 14 hours of play time by now. I'm retired, so I can play as much as I want.

I don't know if anybody else has suggested this yet, and it may not work for everybody, but it can can't hurt to try it.

Cheers

P.S. I never got a memory problem message with any of my CTD's--only a Vista message that said Empire had stopped working with the option to close or to seek help on the web, and close anyway.

Although it aint perfect, it works but for some reason it takes literally ten minutes to load. I'd like to know if i can fix this problem without having to buy a whole new computer. Ok, I've solved the majority of my problems so far, but a pre-existing problem eludes me and all my attempts.

Basically, I only just switched to the 9500 and added some extra RAM, was going to anyway but this problem predates to when I was running an 8600 with one gig.

In ETW, MTW2+K and DOW2, the cursor "flickers" at varying speeds, and seemingly at random when moused over a manipulable game objects.

Here's the thing, when I got DOW2, this didn't happen. In any game. It was running a bit sluggish though so I updated my drivers, something I hadn't done in ohh, about a year ( I know...) That's when it started happening.

Tried to roll back, tried every available driver version I had available to no avail. So, I'm not entirely certain it was a driver issue at all, might have been a coincedence, besides, it's remained with the new GPU.

Highly irritating and it's only with these games, no others.

Just get more RAM. It's only like $15 per Gig - tops. Look up your mobo specs on the manufacturers website and get enough to give you 4 Gigs.

These are probably your specs - but I would cross check against the S/L # on the box.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00906137&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3419521

I would look into the box and figure out if you have one stick (probably one Gig) or two (probably 512MBs). The goal is to get to 4Gigs.

Hello all,

I've got a pretty old rig, and I thought it wouldn't play the game, but turns out it actually worked -- albeit only slightly, and on pretty low settings.

Seeing as my machine managed to play The Witcher decently, as well as Medieval II total war on medium-high settings, this has given me hope in actually improving my machine rather than spending a whole lot of money on a new one.

it's a 3.06 Ghz single core Pentium 4; I guess the weak spots are the RAM (1Gb) and the crappy graphics card (Nvidia GeForce 6200SE turbocache 256 mb).

So my question is, would adding 3 gb of RAM and a decent (say, a Geforce 9800 card or equivalent ATI) allow me to play decently? Is it worth the investment, or should I just get a new machine?

Thank you in advance!

Nope. Un-installing only frees up hard drive space which has zero effect on performance**.

**Unless you have next to no space.

Bottom line = you're running Vista with less than a Gig of RAM and that just will not cut it from a gaming standpoint.

And that brings me to another question and I believe I did ask this before. What kind of video card are you running? That 894 mbs of RAM indicates that you have on-board video but I thought that you had a card. You did not copy over the first 11 lines of the DXDIAG Display Devices that would tell us what we need to know in this area.

Do that and then we'll talk.

Adding RAM and a good card will improve things yes. You may want to check what your mobo can handle in terms of a CPU and buy the most poweful one. I am planning on doing exactly that as I have the RAM (4 Gigs) and the card (9800GT) but my CPU is little faster than yours.

BTW, I do manage to play on medium/high and it is very smooth - I do not check any of the "special" boxes on the bottom of the graphics menu tho'.

Right, I don't this is a bug, but I'll leave that for the people here to judge.....it sounds something more serious to me anyway.
So, I finally get the game, I install it and everything, and I start it. Now, it works fine until the main menu. There I try to run the Road to Independence campaign, and after loading about 1/3 of the way, the game crashes with the infamous white screen, and the Windows message that ETW has encountered a problem and needs to close............
I restart the thing, and run it again, this time trying for a battle tutorial. Same results, it crashes after loading 1/3 of the way. Same thing happens with custom battles......any kind of battle for that matter. The Grand Campaign on the other hand starts and goes on smoothly. However, even in there, as soon as I engage in a battle, and it starts loading same thing. :wall:

Now I tried reinstalling the game.....updating my drivers etc etc.....it just isn't working. I even tried using the err........ahem :embarassed:.......for the game, off the net. Even it gives me the same results.
So any suggestions?

I have exactly the same problems ('cept for RtI, which I havent tried yet), and have tried reinstalling the game and updating my drivers and installing the newest directX, but it still doens't work.

Also, although i'm not sure it's related, I get the BSOD when I click the trade tab; maybe this can help identify the problem?

I play on a laptop, with a Geforce Go 7900 GS 265mb, intel core 2 2Ghz, 2 gigs of ram. I suppose it might be my graphics card, since it's a laptop card, and the latest drivers are only 179.xx (whereas most drivers are already at 184.xx), and dxdiag says the the DAC type of the card is 'integrated ramdac'. (although I am able to play games like M2TW and warhammer online at respectable settings)

India, what are your rig's specs? Maybe it can shed some light on this.

Does anyone know if this problem is fixable? Or maybe I have to wait for new drivers?

Thanks in advance

Well, I have a GeForce 8600 GT, (I updated the driver recently from the official site, to 182.something), 2 GB of DDR2 RAM, an AMD X2 2Ghz, not too shabby.....I was hoping that ETW would work.

I haven't tried hitting the trade button as yet, only the end turn button, but I guess I'll try that and get back with what happens.

Far as the OS is concerned, I have a XP SP2, 32 bit. I had tinkered with the registry to make GTA4 run though, changed a bit to make it think it was XP SP3. :juggle2:

Oddly enough sound seems to be a cause of many crashes, at least in the patch notes they've been referencing it a lot. If you have a realtek chip updating the driver from realtek is abysmal, took me about 12 hours with 'wget' restarting downloads after the connection would drop. The most up to date reasonably trustable source I've found for them is http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/Drivers/Realtek/

The latest patch is mar.30th and, for me at least it's reasonably stable, I have similar specs to you but an 8800 GTS 320mb. it's not perfectly stable but I don't get reproduceable crashes at least :) Oh, crud, ( knocks furiously on wooden desk ).

Sorry to pour cold water on the proceedings but I have had zero luck with any sound related changes. Since day one I have had horrible audio hanging/skipping with the intro. pieces and the cut scenes.

- I originally was using on board Realtec audio - d/l'd latest drivers from March and no change
- Someone stated that OB sound could be an issue
- So I installed a Turtle Beach Riviera card - same issues - and no recent drivers to try

My gut tells me that the bink.dll is still corrupt (an older one used to work better) and these are specific to each game we will have to wait for CA/Bink to address - if they get around to it.

Not really sure where to ask this, but is there any kind of fix for Radeon 4800 cards yet?To my knowledge the game presently does not work with them at all when a battle is loaded (you just get a lot of flashing light). I was not able to find any help about this on the ATI website so any help would be very appreciated.

I tried them, and performance on my laptop picked up a bit. (The game bugs didn't go away, though.)

I bought a new computer to play this game but it keeps failing me! Mostly I get the following errors

- Battle screens have flashing green lines on the terrain which wont go away. (seems to have maybe gone away perhaps the patch helped but cant be sure)
- MASSIVE crash to desktop if I change graphics setting in a battle (usualy to get rid of the green lines or some other hanging problem). shows the message NOT ENOUGH MEMORY
- when loading a battle (usually with reinforcements if that means anything) The bar gets stuck half way and vibrates back and forth. The sytem just hangs.
- Crash to desktop upon loading a battle with the same message not enough memory.

my system

- Intel i7 920 CPU
- Gigabyte x58 MB
- 3 BG DDR3 Ram
- 1000GB HD
- 295 GTX Graphics card (I think the best you can get??)
- Vista Ultimate 32 bit

-> DO i realy have not have memory with this sytem?
-> I know nothing about Vista, is the 64 bit one "better" for games or no impact?
-> How do I know if I have the patch loaded with this stream thingy..
-> what can I do to fix it? Just more ram?

this is entirely ruining the game for me..

THANKS ALL!

Every once in a while I get the screen start to flash or jump on the campaign map. If I open certain windows, I can get it to settle down, but I was wondering if this is caused by a video setting that I need to adjust? I have a nvidia 9800 series with a gig of memory. Any thoughts on this?

I get that when a duel scene window opens. I've had it with two cards now (an 8600 GT and my new 9800 card). I don't think it is video related but sound related.

I am convinced - from the evidence available - that the sound DLLs are corrupt and need to be fixed. These DLLs are causing the pauses on the campaign map and the bad cut scene sound issues.

Here's hoping that this issue is addressed in an upcoming patch.

I checked the system requirements and I should be able to run the game although just barely.

I installed the demo to check this in practise, this is what happens:

The game starts. The video flickers between the shots of the ship and the intel logo. I push escape and I get to the main menu. I quit because of real life.
Later I start again but the game always freezes up (doesn't respond) on the 'credit screen'. It does this every single time I try this.

What could be the problem? why did the game work on the first try?

Any fix for this issue? I am having this problem in my RTI campaign, chapter 4, year 1800ish. After taking Hispaniola, I get the victory screen and when I click OK to continue...crash. Tried taking another city (Mexico this time) and...crash. Every city I take, I get a CTD afterwards. I also get the msvcr80.dll crash rather often. I'm about ready to give up on this game because of the constant crashing :help:

is a bit of a vague question... but yes and see post above yours, that's a person with 182.50.
I've had more CTDs since the new patch but as it's in a campaign started prior to the patch I haven't stressed over it. probably won't stress much until I forget to save after a large battle.

some people liked the 180.48 drivers, they're linked on 2nd page of this thread.

This lovely CTD has just cropped up for me, too. I've looked here, the Centre forums and the official forums, and there doesn't seem to be any sign of a fix - or even an acknowledgement from CA, which is pretty poor as it is a major game-breaking issue.

I'm currently working back through my pretty exhaustive list of saves to see if I can get around it. I'll post my results.

EDIT:Delightful. My game has also picked up the 'declare war' CTD.

EDIT2: So, I just loaded the last save where I could declare war and conquer cities without a CTD (in 1741) and ran it up to the point I reached before and encountered these crashes (1748). It now appears that I can declare war and conquer anew without CTD :/ So I might be able to continue.

There is one more thing I suspect that I want to test...

EDIT3: Well I thought it might have been something to do with armies not having enough movement points to enter the city they captured, or fleets being in the enemy port of the city, but no - looks like those saves were all corrupted and I just have to go back 16 turns.

EDIT4: No dice. After a few turns, I was CTDing when making diplomatic proposals/declaring war. The whole game is lost. Thanks a bunch, CA.

Will ETW have the same CTD problems that MTW had?
Given that the game uses an entirely different engine, no.

The irony, it hurts...

Hey guys, since version 1.0 of the game I've been experiencing this "glitch" when returning to the campaign map from a battle pretty often but not always. It seems mostly random, whatever the factions involved, region of the map, result of the battle, etc., sometimes it just happens, sometimes it doesn't.

Basically I go into battle, whether started by me or engaged by the AI, then I either win or loose, and sometimes when I return to the campaign map after the battle is done this is how my map turns out:

https://img35.imageshack.us/img35/7254/bugl.th.jpg (https://img35.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bugl.jpg)

The water is black everywhere, characters and buildings have disappeared except for their floors. I can select cities and build normally, but moving units is difficult. What I did when I had this for the first time was save the game and return to main menu, then I loaded the saved game and it fixed the problem. So I can fix it easily by saving and returning to the main menu then loading the game.

I have SSAO turned off, the rest turned on more or less detailed. I have an NVidia 8800 GTS with the 182.06 drivers, a quad-core CPU and 3gb of RAM.

Any ideas?

I get that with some versions of nvidia drivers ( and have 8800 gts, quad, 4 gb ), I don't have it with 182.50 drivers.

Also, it might have come and gone with turning on some of the check boxes at the bottom of the graphics option screen but I don't recall now. I do know it came back with some beta drivers I tested then went away when I switched back to 182.50.

Like I mentioned in the hardware thread, other than the fact it is developed by the same company there are no similarities between the two games. Empire uses a new engine with new code. It will not suffer from the same problems as MTW.

I laughed now after playing when I re read this thread for some issues I was having.

Hi all,
even now with the 9.6catlyst i can't play empire total war for more than 20 minutes!it doesen't matter if settings are low or ultra, randomly the screen freezes and the audio start to emitt strange sounds in loop like wistles or smthing metallic, i can't even go to windows and i have to reboot. I've not such problems with other games like unreal tournament 3 that stress cpu and graphic card.

Hi all,
even now with the 9.6catlyst i can't play empire total war for more than 20 minutes!it doesen't matter if settings are low or ultra, randomly the screen freezes and the audio start to emitt strange sounds in loop like wistles or smthing metallic, i can't even go to windows and i have to reboot. I've not such problems with other games like unreal tournament 3 that stress cpu and graphic card.
here's my hardware:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450
Mainboard: P5E3 WS PRO
RAM: DDR3 2048MB
Hard Disk: 200GB
ASUS HD 4850
sound card: inside the motherboard
Alim: ezcool 1050 W

i put my DXDiag in spoiler

use SPOIL in the tags instead of SPOILER, I did the same thing.

This is speculation ...

Might be audio drivers, and might nevertheless be bad memory on your video card. M2TW is what stressed my previous card enough to get it RMAed ( and replaced with a better one for free, yay ),
I'd tried testing other games to see if my problem was M2TW or the card, they didn't have problems
but it was actually the card ( damn 7900s ).

Anyhow only things I can think of are update audio drivers, try a couple different video driver versions, try the update to ETW that's due on monday and if none work then contact support at your
video card maker. My 7900 was fine for the first 9 months then started showing problems in M2TW as I said, by the time I got off my lazy arse to return it it was showing artifacting on bootup text screen even.

so you think it's a memory problem?
I've tryed all the catalyst from the 9.3 to 9.6...I should try an older one?
I know about the patch of monday and I hope it'll fix my problem. There's a way to understand if my card's memory RMAed (what does it mean? xD)
thank you

Tony.Montana.

I've tryed the new patch but the freez occur with the same modality...
I've disabled my audiocard from bios (it's integrated in the motherboard) but the problem was not there
I've tested my cpu and ram with prime95 for 8 hours and it gave me no error.
I really don't know what to do...can someone help me?

I just think it's possible it is. Only thing you can do is eliminate possiblities,

try a few graphics drivers ( you've done this ) if they all have problem it's probably not driver issue.

try a couple sound card drivers,

if after both those your still seeing problems the only things I can think of are,
physical problem with graphics card, memory or processor ( this happens especially if you overclock but even sometimes not )
physical problem with main memory on machine ( doubtful but it's happened to me )
corrupted install of ETW ( which means uninstall, then remove

C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAMEHERE\Application Data\The Creative Assembly\Empire folder
** after copying your save games from it **

and then reinstall the game.
)

RMA is when you return the card or memory chip to the manufacturer and they replace it, any 4850 would still be under warranty. Before returning it you generally have to contact their support on whatever support forum they use.

thank you for help Babblearossa,
about the sound card driver: I've disabled it from the bios and i run game with no sound and the freeze happen in the same way, I think we can take out this possibilities..or not?
my prime95 tests don't exclude a bit the possibility of a phisical problem of the ram or cpus?(i don't overclock)
you know if there is a program to test/stress graphic card memory?

I try to reinstall game in the way you suggest me, and try more old catalysts..
thank you again

Babblearossa
06-23-2009, 17:21
Yeah I think that rules out sound, and there haven't been a lot of posts about catalyst drivers causing trouble so it's doubtful it's them.

if prim95 passes your cpu is probably fine, OCCT is also a good system stresser, it tests GPU now though I haven't used that much as it's new and I haven't been playing with overclocking.

There's also Furmark and ATITool for stressing graphics cards.

maybe..I was thinking....format c:\ ??
can solve it...?

Tony.Montana.
06-25-2009, 09:42
ok I've formatted end when I watched the intro cinematic my PC power off and when i power it on my 4850hd don't do the same...I get it to assistance and I'm actually playing with my old 2900xt and all it's fine!
So thank you for help and cya!

I get a crash at two times: (1) always when changing from campaign screen to battle screen; and (2) there is always a sticking point between 1720-30 that the game will just CTD every turn so I have to start a new game.

I play on low graphic settings, and have tried both in and out of Window.

System info below. Any suggestions please?

Does anyone know a fix for this?

After playing ETW for 5 to 10 minutes my PC suddenly looses power. By touch my PSU seems pretty hot, but I would be surprised if it is not providing enough power since 550w has been sufficient for my present hardware while running graphically demmanding games like crysis. I have tried lowering the graphics settings but that did not help. I am using the latest drivers for my graphics card, I am going to try rolling back to an older version.

This is my dxdiag:

Edit: Never mind, I solved my problem by going trough big pile of drivers, and I found the right one.

My game plays and loads everything correctly thus far, but the graphics are at the lowest of the low.
Not a problem, except my computer is playing CoD:MW:2 without any serious problems or anything. I think it's because my computer is a Windows 7, but I didn't know if anyone else had this problem with their games?

Stupid questions out of the way first:

Have you tried turning the graphics up?

Are you able to play COD4:2 at max settings?

I'm playing with ragdoll and smoke softening, the works really.

I haven't adjusted to "high performance" because the settings were already on for the game, and it's a little slow anyway. My friend was saying that it's because the files weren't made or adjusted for a Windows 7 operating system, but idk.

I dowloaded the demo, I have the system requirements and this takes 4 min to load a battle map and the game has choppy video. it stutters every 2 seconds. Does this demo need a patch? I would like to play this game if it would work right. All the other MTWs have worked ok for me, but this isn't any fun if its like this I more than sufficient RAM and a 256 mb vid card

The demo is a very old version of the game. It has changed a lot since.

Thanks Beskar. I heard there have been a lot of patches since the release, so I think I will try it.

Hi folks, just purchased ETW and when I click through to begin playing any of the games or the tutorial I get a screen full of choppy graphics, although the sound is fine.

My Specs on my brand new laptop are;

Intel Core2 Duo T6500 @ 2.1Ghz
ATI Radeon 4600
With 4Gb of RAM.

I have checked DirectX 9.0 and that seems fine. Is my graphics card the issue?

Thanks,

Got somewhere, by turning the screen res down to 1270x768 and then running same screen res within ETW. Also ran Shader 2.0 instead of 3. Seems to work fine now, decent speed without setting the world on fire.

I've been having tonnes of CTD's. At least one every other turn, sometimes severel during a turn. I've tried following a fix to do with memory but that hasn't solved the CTD's, although I believe I am now having less CTD's due to the memory fix found at http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=238484. These CTD's are so bad I uninstalled the game very quickly after buying it because the CTD's make the game virtually unplayable, and I've only just reinstalled it after many months in order to try and fix it.
Can any wonderful and amasing person help me?

To clarify my copy of Empire may CTD if I select a unit on the campaign map (such as an agent, army or navy), when I select click one of the faction screens (finance, policies, ministers, etc), when I click on the diplomacy screen, and the technology screen, when I end a turn and when I begin a turn. The CTD's are not guaranteed or constant, but as you can see when the massive amount of things that can cause a crash, I can barely play Empire Total War.
Any help?
