El_Che asks: Why wasn't this game available for preload on Steam? Right now Steam is going down because of it, and at least I can't download the game I bought.
Moderating Hero: We're getting a few of these. Do you know?
Kieran Brigden: No problem, this is a genuine issue. Sadly it's one that's out of CA's hands. The Steam preload was something we wanted to do but for regional reasons we aren't able to implement. I'm sorry if it's caused a problem for anyone, which I know it has for some. All I can say it was our intention to offer this and we weren't able to do so for technical reasons outside our control.

Sailorboy asks: "If you have purchased a boxed copy...You will be able to activate your boxed copy of Empire and play on Wednesday 4th March." quote from the totalwar.com. At what time (CET) is the activation to be released on the 4th of March?
Kieran Brigden: Empire goes live at 1700GMT 1800CET TODAY. For the US its 0900GMT tomorrow.
Moderating Hero: Kapow!

I just went into my local Game to ask how much the special edition will cost.
£44.99 :furious3:
It better include a working rifle or something really cool like that, because there is absolutely no way I'm prepared to pay £45 just to get a couple extra units
I still have to wait 18 hours till I can go to the store, but I have to be quick, they have 6 regular ETW and I believe 2 SF
Available: March 4th, 2009
This game will unlock in approximately 16 hours
2 A.M. PST
*sigh*
From looking around at other forums it seems that steam is way overloaded and people are getting pretty fired up...Luckily I planned to play in 2 days so I have all day tomorrow to download. I hope it unlocks at 02:00 PST because that is 00:00 my time but steam is telling me 16 hours which is more like 04:00 my time...Would be nice to try and run the download when Europe and much of the Americas is asleep instead of when every US gamer is trying to download it.
well hopefully everyone can remain calm and be patient with steam and the downloads
How fast does Steam download? I'm thinking it is better to just go and buy the box copy tomorrow because the actual download at 10gigs is going to be like a day anyways. Or am I missing some new and improved faster download technology?

Depends on your internet speed.
Depends on your internet speed.
Steam for me usually goes somewhere around 1.8 MB/s. The demo did. Yes that's an M for Megabytes.

Dont feel bad beane I got it from play.com as you did and if I'm any indication you will get it today.
An interesting note; the special forces units need to be downloaded with a unique code.

Im in a difficult position; either I play the game now or install the bonus units.
Desicions decisions...
Edit- ok the other disk isnt a bonus disk I just hadnt gotten far enough into the installation for me to have to use it.

Well a few of them are late tech units, and plus, who says you are going to play the factions that can get them?
Please explain.
I imagine you can't just create the units from turn 0, you'll need to tech up to be able to produce them.
I believe that's what pever is saying

We bid you farewell, Sir Beane!
My little baby girl lemur woke me up at 5 am with a crying jag. Normally I would have been unhappy, but this morning I was kinda thrilled. After I calmed her down and got her back to sleep, I tiptoed over to my office and started the download from Steam. I'll go check it later. With any luck, ETW will be waiting for me.

Sir beane if you get my problem change the download location to US north central it worked for me! Allthough it is about 30kb/s but better than... ah crap it just failed again!
:beam:Don't be giving out my server location to others...:beam:
Anyhow download in progress was getting over 1MB/s but down to about 650K/s now...Anyhow it is running at least.:2thumbsup:

Um is there anyway to play the game without updating the damn thing? This update hasnt even gotten past 0%.:wall:
I would switch to US east coast for your server (getting 1.5MB/s)...Also I found if it won't start I try and launch the game through steam. That seems to give it a kick in the A#$ and then it starts downloading for me.

03-04-2009, 16:04
Well mine is giving me a snap back effect, every time it tries to start it kicks back to starting download. Im going to reinstall steam and see how that goes.

For everybody that's getting it from Steam - it took me about 7 hours yesterday night - from 7 PM to 2 AM. Average dwnld speed ~500 kB/s but I was checking it regularly and switching servers when it dropped, which happened quite often (Middle East servers were best :beam: )
Then it launched just to crash my Windows, had to reboot. After that it started but with textures missing (all troops were black).
Of course I went to bed with a splitting headache and woke up with it. Turned on PC and Steam started updating and stayed "100% updating" for like 3 hours... I went to get myself a shotgun and a one way ticket to Steam HQ... and then it managed to suddenly launch correctly. I'm so relieved that it works I don't care anymore about my special units or whatever.
I think that's the whole point of Steam download - it goes so badly that when it finally ends you are inclined to see this as a miracle - and who on Earth would hate a miracle?
But I won't repeat this Steam experience, that's for sure. One Steam miracle in my gamer life is enough :gah2:
I haven't bothered yet, but how does one switch servers?
-edit-
NVM, a quick stroll through "options" sorted me out. North Central US seems a bit slow, Denver's giving me more love.

I'm getting that to. It's been happening for the past couple of weeks, still not got the Scout update for Team Fortress 2 and i never got the Empire demo :(
What causes it, i have no idea. I've not managed to find a solution yet either!

If you have steam on a portable hard drive, move it to your main drive. Thats how i fixed that problem... its just the matter of steam refusing to start which has me stumped now...
