View Full Version : So how does this tech and prestige work?

Basically my problem is that as playing as Sweden I'm getting absolutely trounced by other nations technology wise. I'm playing on M/VH and have 4 universities yet every other nation is miles ahead of me on tech, what's up with that?
I'm also lagging in prestige despite owning the whole of Scandinavia, Iceland and some German provinces. Does the game only award prestige for prolonged military conflicts or something?

The AI is probably trading techs amongst themselves.

Yet wont trade with me?
Maybe the A.I isn't quite as amazing as it first seemed after all.

Not to insult your intelligence, but you are putting your best gentlemen in your biggest college/univesity right? Also, you are constantly selecting a technology to research right? Also, you can buy technologies for $3k to $10k a piece. I bought Square formation, grenades, and canister shot for $15k from 3 different countries. Also, on VH campaign the AI seems to get huge monetary, and probably tech, bonuses...
To trade tech here's what I did. I offered GB $10K for canister shot. Sure, it's was a lot of money, but I had the money and it gave me time to research what I wanted to. I gave Sweden $3K for Grenades. If you have money, offer it till they accept.

I have a gentlemen in each college and 3 in my Stockholm university and 3 in my Denmark university, my two biggest research institutes.
Despite this im still getting thrashed on tech, not even my good friends will trade techs with me cheaply and those that do will ask ridiculous demands such as 3 of my military techs for one of theirs. Doesn't seem all that realistic ya know.

Do you offer cash when asking for tech?

Do you offer cash when asking for tech?
Yup, normally in the region of 5k plus and even then it's difficult to squeeze a deal out of them.

I guess the VH AI asks for unreasonable fees for tech then... for vanilla at least.

No, they just love their tech too much to give up. I don't blame them, because it is fairly hard to actually get them

You can demand tech in peace settlements.

prestige usually, in MTW anyway, worked based on the regions you own based on victory conditions.
So if you take a region that is not part of your victory conditions (list of provinces you must have to win the game) you may get only a couple points.
Where as you if take a region listed in your victory conditions, you get expodentially more.
So for instance, if I was playing Austria, I would get far more prestiege for taking Venice or East Prussia, then I would for taking over France. Even though conquering Paris would seem more prestigious, it is not part of the victory conditions, and therefore only minor points.
At least that's how it used to be.

Now they are a mixture of all your accomplishments. Tech contributes, army size contributes, army victories contribute, bla blabla....

Argh!! I just realized that you can research more than one tech at a time!!
In the top of the tech window are your schools (if you have more than one), and you can select them (the schools at the top) one at a time and assign a tech to each school!!
No wonder I was dropping so far behind the AI...
have a look in one of the tabs, it gives a prestige breakdown (the 4 areas I saw were navy, tech-the probable source of your woes, army and economy). Try to improve these areas. I think military is having a big army mostly, not actually conquering. As for tech trading, it can be downright ridiculous-i offered 'very friendly' GB 3 techs and 40k as the dutch for a single tech, and they refused with 'Knowledge given is not as prized as knowledge earned.' GRAAAGH! Stop saying that!
I've found trading tech on VH to be extremely unfruitful. The AI won't even accommodate 4 to 1 deals...
Yup, normally in the region of 5k plus and even then it's difficult to squeeze a deal out of them.
That's nothing, they refuse me when I offer over 50k, but the thing is in the America game where this is happening, every state is fully tech'd apart from mine due to the AI's inter-lending as it does.
I am playing as the United Provinces. It looks like I only have 1 university am I correct on this?, Its understandable if that were the case because I only have 1 European province. So I’ve been trying to build another University somewhere but I don’t seem to have that option Is it possible to build another University or can you only upgrade the ones you have and capture new ones?
Also I upgraded my university and it said it spawns gentleman but its been like 6 turns and none have appeared???

What is the benefit of having more than one University, other than the possibility of spawning more gentlemen?
can you research more than one tech if you have more than one university?
or
do extra extra universities add cumulatively to the speed of research?
or
is it only that you might spawn a few more gentlemen as a result?
cheers
For every school/college/university you can research a technology, I currently have like 8 universities in my UP campgain, which gives my the ability to research 8 techs a time.
Furthermore, having more universities enlarges the chance to spawn a gentleman

Thanks! couple of questions
Did you start withonly 1 UP university?
How did you get all those universities did you capture or build them?

How does this mechanic actually work, as you select a tech to research from the tech tab, not from within the specific university?
I'm confused. :dizzy2:

It depends on the population of your province and the type of province. It has to be a real province (not one of those governor crap ones) and max size.

Go to your tab, select university, select tech, do for each, done. I don't understand why people aren't doing this, I just did it, I ever had to be told or even read win the instruction manual.

Yes started with Utrecht as a school
I captured them in France, Spain, Portugal, Savoy and Würtemburg and developped some Ceylon and New Andalusia

When you open the tech tab you'll see a list of schools/universities. Just select a university and click the desired tech, then the next uni and the next tech, and so on.
